Misconception #: Corn And Soy Are Toxic To Animals
Cattle, poultry and hogs can eat soy and corn. Its how the grains are utilized in the diet that can make it hard for them to digest. No livestock producer only feeds corn and soy to their animals they balance their diets with other grains and grasses needed for proper development.
As part of increasing transparency questions being set forth by consumers, many people have begun to focus on what cattle, poultry and hogs are fed as part of their diets. Its important to understand that the focus on soy and corn in animal diets has developed because of the impact of soy and corn on the human diet. The rise in food sensitivities has left many people wondering if corn and soy should be eaten by the animals as the allergens in these two crops are believed to be transferred into peoples bodies as a result of eating meat. Before addressing this, lets back up to understand how the animals digest corn and soy.

Effects Upon Public Opinion In The Us
One of the effects of the Beef Hormone Dispute in the US was to awaken the public’s interest in the issue. This interest was not wholly unsympathetic to the EU. In 1989, for example, the Consumer Federation of America and the Center for Science in the Public Interest both pressed for an adoption of a ban within the US similar to that within the EU. US consumers appear to be less concerned with the use of synthetic chemicals in food production. Because of current policy, in which all beef is allowed whether produced with hormones or genetically modified, US consumers now have to rely on their own judgment when buying goods. However, in a study done in 2002, 85% of respondents wanted mandatory labeling on beef produced with growth hormones. The public in general is motivated to purchase organic or natural meats for several reasons. Organic meats and poultry is the fastest growing agricultural sector, from 20022003 there was a growth of 77.8%, accounting for $23 billion in the entire organic food market.
No Medically Important Antibiotics
This means antibiotics used to treat peoplesuch as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and tetracyclinehave never been given to the animals.
Sanderson Farms, the third-largest chicken producer in the U.S., has this policy, as do many fast-food restaurants, such as McDonalds, KFC, Taco Bell, and Wendys for the chicken they serve, but not for other types of meat.
However, no medically important antibiotics doesnt mean no antibiotics. And even antibiotics that arent medically important may lead to resistance to other antibiotics. Resistance genes dont discriminate, says Tara C. Smith, Ph.D., associate professor of public health at Kent State University. Genes that create resistance to medically important antibiotics can tag along with what we think of as less crucial drugs, leading to similar consequences, in the long term, to using those critical ones.
And you have to read the wording of the claim carefully. Some companiessuch as Soniceliminate medically important antibiotics in chicken only for growth purposes but may still use them for disease prevention.
Eliminating medically important antibiotics for growth purposes is now the standard in the meat and poultry industry, so restaurants or meat producers that have this policy arent doing anything beyond what theyre already supposed to be doing, says Michael Hansen, Ph.D., a senior scientist at CR.

Is Canadian Beef Hormone & Antibiotic Free
Surprisingly, no. Or maybe this is not so surprising. With the development in technologies and research and multiple ads from A& W promoting steroid and hormone free Teen Burgers, you would think its common place to have au natural beef.
Firstly, its important to remember that there is no such thing as hormone-free beef. Hormones are a naturally occurring substance that all animals and mammals produce. Each beef producer has the option to decide to use additional hormones in raising cattle. Its not as economical to go without them, which means you and I pay for their product. If a beef producer does decide to use hormones, there are strict federal and provincial inspections that test for residual levels of antibiotics and hormones. If the animal does not pass this test, it does enter the food processing step.
The truth is, Health Canada has approved three natural hormones and three synthetic hormones for use in cattle in Canada. The reality is as the demand for food increases globally, we need a way to produce higher quality protein quickly and efficiently. Thus, we are using both hormones and antibiotics in feed to allow us to produce lean livestock that are not being impacted by illnesses as much as they once were.
Antibiotics are used in cattle for two reasons:
So do the long-term consequences outweigh the potential benefits?

Potential Human Health Impacts Of Growth Hormones Used In Food Animals
The hormonal substances used for growth promotion in cattle are the naturally occurring steroids: estradiol-17,progesterone, and testosterone, as well as synthetic compounds such as zeranol, which has high affinity for estrogen receptors, trenbolone acetate, which has affinity to androgen receptors, and melengestrol acetate, which has similar activity to progestins.

Theres a good chance youve heard about or seen a story on the news lately about a leading consumer organizations report on the widespread use of antibiotics in the US meat supply.
A recent nationwide poll conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center states that the majority of respondents were extremely or very concerned about issues related to the use of antibiotics in animal feed, including the potential creation of superbugs due to overuse of antibiotics, unsanitary and crowded conditions for livestock, human consumptions of antibiotic residue, and environmental effects due to agricultural runoff containing antibiotics. 86% of consumers indicated they thought that meat raised without antibiotics should be available in their local supermarket.
At Whole Foods Market, our standard is clear: No antibiotics, EVER!
For the past 60 years antibiotics have been used to create efficiencies in meat production. Antibiotics are added to the animals feed or water to prevent infection that can occur when animals are crowded in confined areas.

Zeranol Melengestrol And Trenbolone
Melengestrol is a synthetic progestogen administered orally as a feed additive to improve feed efficiency. The approved feeding doses are in a range of 0.25~0.50 mg/heifer per day during the fattening and finishing periods . Its activity is revealed via a high affinity for progesterone receptors as well as increases in prolactin secretion and the activation of estrogen receptors . Melengestrol acetate was metabolized to 2,15-dihydroxy methyl MGA, 6-hydroxy methyl-MGA, 15-hydroxy-MGA, and 2-hydroxy MGA in a vitro system prepared from cattle, and the most active metabolite among them was 2-hydroxy MGA showing 9-times less potency than MGA . The residue level found in Canadian beef heifers treated with MGA at a rate of 0.40 mg/animal per day during 1982~1984 was 2.8 pg/kg as a mean value , and 4.6% of all samples had MGA residues of more than 10.0 pg/kg of fat .

Eu Ban And Its Background
The hormones banned by the EU in cattle farming were estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, melengestrol acetate and trenbolone acetate. Of these, the first three are synthetic versions of endogenous hormones that are naturally produced in humans and animals, and also occur in a wide range of foods, whereas the last two are synthetic and not naturally occurring, which mimic the behaviour of endogenous hormones. Zeranol is produced semi-synthetically, but it also occurs naturally in some foods. It is one of several derivatives of zearalenone produced by certain Fusarium. Although its occurrence in animal products can be partly due to its ingestion in such feeds, alpha-zearalanol can also be produced endogenously in ruminants that have ingested zearalenone and some zearalenone derivatives in such feeds. The EU did not impose an absolute ban. Under veterinary supervision, cattle farmers were permitted to administer the synthetic versions of natural hormones for cost-reduction and possibly therapeutic purposes, such as synchronising the oestrus cycles of dairy cows. All six hormones were licensed for use in the US and in Canada.
The use of these hormones in cattle farming had been studied scientifically in North America for 50 years prior to the ban, and there had been widespread long-term use in over 20 countries. Canada and the United States asserted that this provided empirical evidence both of long-term safety and of scientific consensus.
More Work But More Reward
Because some of the inputs are reduced, Herbert believes it probably costs about the same to produce hormone- and antibiotic-free beef as it does to produce traditional beef, despite the extra year it takes to finish each animal.
There is a lot more time invested in each of these animals, and theres a whole extra winter of wintering and haying, she said. But if you look at the price of grain, thats a huge cost for getting conventional beef ready for finish. I think it probably evens out.
The Herberts rely on word of mouth, social media and their website to increase their sales, and so far, it seems to be working. Their customers pay for butchering and buy products in bulk at a small premium over beef in the supermarket an added advantage of marketing beef directly.
We are getting a premium for all our beef, and we can set the price, so we know every year what were going to make, Herbert said. Were not just waiting for fluctuations in the market.
Producing and marketing their beef this way has also made the family more aware of the final product.
We actually get to see and hear about, and consume the final product. We know from birth all the way to the carcass what kind of quality of cattle were producing, Herbert said.
That knowledge helps with changing genetics, culling, and seeing how their management practices are working.

No Critically Important Antibiotics
This means the company has stopped using only some of the medically important antibiotics used to treat people.
And in the case of poultry, a no critically important antibiotics claim doesnt translate to meaningful change in antibiotic use, Hansen says. Consumer Reports evaluated the list of antibiotics that the World Health Organization classifies as critically important in human medicine and found that most of them are not typically used in chicken production anyway.

Where Can You Buy Beef Without Hormones
The truth is that you cant. You cannot buy beef without hormones because you cannot buy any food without hormones. Fruit, veg, meat, milk, eggs, nuts everything we eat comes from a living plant or animal. And ALL living things need hormones to survive and grow, making it impossible to buy beef without hormones.
Now, that being said, you can buy beef that has been raised without added hormones. Wait. What?! What exactly are these added hormones you speak of? And why are they used to raise beef if hormones are already naturally occurring?
Well, Im glad you asked! Why? Because Im a mom. And as a mom, I completely understand questioning everything, especially when it comes to providing for your fam. That being said
Added hormones are, as the term suggests, added hormones.
But to be more specific, added hormones are steroids. Naturally occurring steroids such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can be can given to cattle via small pellets called implants.
This is an illustration of the true size of an actual implant. Tiny, right? Also illustrated here is how my husbands hands look after a long day of ranch work before he washes.
If a farmer or rancher chooses to use implants, they carefully place the implant just under the skin on the back side of the animals ear. Once the implant has been placed, it begins to release the steroids over time, promoting lean muscle growth.
Why use them in the first place?
Thats great, but is the beef safe?
