How Is Sinus Infection Diagnosed

Diagnosis depends on symptoms and requires an examination of the throat, nose and sinuses. Your allergist will look for:

  • Discolored nasal discharge

If your sinus infection lasts longer than eight weeks, or if standard antibiotic treatment is not working, a sinus CT scan may help your allergist diagnose the problem. Your allergist may examine your nose or sinus openings. The exam uses a long, thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and a light at one end that is inserted through the nose. It is not painful. Your allergist may give you a light anesthetic nasal spray to make you more comfortable.

Mucus cultures: If your sinus infection is chronic or has not improved after several rounds of antibiotics, a mucus culture may help to determine what is causing the infection. Most mucus samples are taken from the nose. However, it is sometimes necessary to get mucus directly from the sinuses.

Knowing what kind of bacteria is causing the infection can lead to more effective antibiotic therapy. A fungus could also cause your sinus infection. Confirming the presence of fungus is important. Fungal sinus infection needs to be treated with antifungal agents, rather than antibiotics. In addition, some forms of fungal sinus infection allergic fungal sinus infection, for example do not respond to antifungal agents and often require the use of oral steroids.

When do I need antibiotics for sinus infection? If you have bacterial sinusitis, treatment with the right antibiotics will help eliminate the infection. However, it is essential to remember that some studies show that antibiotic therapy doesnt always lessen symptom duration or the chance of developing complications.

According to recent statistics, antibiotic treatment cures five to 11% of people faster than if they didnt get treatment. Additionally, several cases of bacterial sinusitis go away by themselves in about two weeks.

What Are The Six Types Of Sinusitis And Sinus Infections

Sinusitis may be classified in several ways, based on its duration and the type of inflammation . The term rhinosinusitis is used to imply that both the nose and sinuses are involved and is becoming the preferred term over sinusitis.

  • Acute sinus infection usually lasts less than 3-5 days.
  • Subacute sinus infection lasts one to three months.
  • Chronic sinus infection is greater than three months. Chronic sinusitis may be further sub-classified into chronic sinusitis with or without nasal polyps, or allergic fungal sinusitis.
  • Recurrent sinusitis has several sinusitis attacks every year.

There is no medical consensus on the above time periods.

  • Infected sinusitis usually is caused by an uncomplicated virus infection. Less frequently, bacterial growth causes sinus infection and fungal sinus infection is very infrequent. Subacute and chronic forms of a sinus infection usually are the result of incomplete treatment of an acute sinus infection.
  • Noninfectious sinusitis is caused by irritants and allergic conditions and follows the same general timeline for acute, subacute, and chronic as infectious sinusitis.

The DNSGP-2 provides a good representation of morbidity and prescribing habits in Dutch general practice, except for an under-representation of GPs with single-handed practices. Data were assumed to be accurate as extraction took place from electronic medical records of the practices, and inter-observer reliability of coding episodes into the ICPC codes was high. The number of prescriptions was used as the outcome measure. It was not possible to use defined daily doses, as information on the dosage of antibiotics was not often registered by GPs. However, the measure used here has the advantage that it clearly depicts a GPâs decision to prescribe or not.

    Sinusitis Resistance To Antibiotic

What Is The Best Antibiotic For Sinus Infection

Bacteria resistance to antibiotics is a big problem throughout the United States. Several common bacteria behind sinusitis can carry a gene that makes them resistant to the effects of antibiotics. Youll notice this after a few days of treatment when the gene activates. It can even travel between bacteria in a plasmid capsule, affecting a large population of bacteria.

When you dont show improvement after a course of antibiotics within four to seven days, especially if you did seem better at first but then got worse again, you might be dealing with resistant bacteria. Talk to your physician about an examination and potential culture or sinus DNA analysis. These tests can identify the most harmful resistant strains within about 24 hours and offer a comprehensive bacterial analysis within one week.

How Safe Are Nasal Steroid Sprays

As you may have seen from other posts on this blog, intranasal corticosteroids sprays are common treatments for nasal and sinus problems. Often these sprays need to be used daily, and if patients stop using the sprays their symptoms may recur.

Pro Tip: You may need to use nasal steroid sprays for several weeks to feel the full effects! Stick with it to make sure you give them a chance to work.

One of the most common questions we hear about nasal steroids sprays is whether they are safe to use long term, or every day. Steroids in general have a bad reputation for potential side effects, and people can often be wary about taking these medications for extended periods of time.

The good news is almost all of the intranasal corticosteroids currently used have been well studied for safety, have excellent safety profiles, and minimal side effects. People with chronic rhinosinusitis or allergic rhinitis sometimes have to take intranasal corticosteroids for years, and studies on these patients show no significant long-term side effects. This is largely because the newer nasal steroid sprays are not absorbed into the body or the bloodstream in significant amounts. For some of the nasal steroid sprays available today, less than 1% of the dose to the nose is absorbed into the bloodstream. Because of this, the side effects of nasal steroid sprays are typically limited to the nose.
