Skin Rashes: The Dos And Donts Of Rashes
Many Flint residents have suffered from skin rashes since the water crisis began.
Although doctors say its not likely lead would cause a skin reaction that would lead to a rash, other things in the water might cause problems. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is now investigating the rash problem in conjunction with federal agencies.
Dr. Walter Barkey, a dermatologist in Flint, urges anyone with a skin rash to seek the care of a doctor, especially a dermatologist.
The first thing you need to treat a skin rash effectively is an accurate diagnosis, he said. Most primary doctors would agree that diagnosing skin rashes is not easy. Flipping through a picture book of rashes is not very helpful-accurate in making the diagnosis of a skin rash.
Barkey said if you already have a diagnosis and know you have eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, or other condition, there are several things you can do at home to bring relief from itching. Here are his dos and donts of general care for rashes:
Do I Need To Use A Special Sunscreen If I Have Psoriasis
You dont necessarily need to use special sunscreen, but wearing sun protection is important. Long sleeves and clothing with a UPF protection rating can come in handy.
If you have a flare-up or actively inflamed skin, sunscreen may irritate your skin further. In these instances, it may be best to avoid sun exposure or to wear clothing that protects your skin from the suns rays.
When flare-ups are managed, a sun blocker that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may be your safest bet. Always use a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30.
If you take a medication for psoriasis, such as methotrexate or acitretin, you may have heightened sensitivity to the sun, increasing your need for protection.

At the time of birth, the hosts immune system is immature. Compelling evidence from human and mouse studies suggests that colonization of the gut early in life has a substantial role in directing immune system development. It has been shown that in humans the main bacterial populations comprising microbiota stabilize during the first 23 years of life,. During this time, the microbiota develops and subsequently remains stable throughout the life. Dysregulation of microbiota, for example, through antibiotic use during infancy has been linked with increased risk of development of allergy and asthma and even obesity later in life,,. We wanted to determine the effect of early microbial colonization on the development of imiquimod-induced psoriasis. To this end, breeding pairs were given antibiotics in drinking water immediately after delivery of pups for 3 weeks of rearing. After weaning, mice were housed or cohoused in normal specific pathogen-free conditions for next 8 weeks. The mice were then treated with imiquimod cream for 4 consecutive days . After imiquimod treatment we observed, surprisingly, increased severity of disease, increased skin thickness and weight loss in mice neonatally treated with antibiotics compared with mice without antibiotic treatment . Histological analysis of skin biopsies revealed increased thickness of the skin with dermal infiltrate in neoATB mice .

How Should I Use This Medication
Apply the ointment 1 to 3 times a day over the affected area. Cover with a dressing or leave exposed as directed by your doctor. Do not use the ointment in the eyes.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

Taken altogether, we have revealed a previously unrecognized role of gut commensal microbiota on the development of skin psoriatic inflammation induced by either imiquimod or by intradermal injection of IL-23. The increased IL-22-producing T cells in the skin are likely the major inflammatory cells for the exacerbation of the disease. Here we have shown that early correct colonization of gut with commensal bacteria can prevent development of the severe form of psoriasis. Transplantation of healthy microbiota by cohousing the neoATB mice together with normal control mice could reduce the skin inflammation in the adult age, likely by re-balancing the dysregulated microbiota caused by antibiotics treatment early in life.

Neomycin, polymyxin, bacitracin, and hydrocortisone combination is only for use on the skin. Do not use the medication in your eyes. Do not use the medication in your ears if you have a hole or tear in your eardrum.
To use neomycin, polymyxin, bacitracin, and hydrocortisone combination, apply a small amount of medication to cover the affected area of skin with a thin, even film and rub in gently.
Do not wrap or bandage the treated area unless your doctor tells you that you should.
Your symptoms should begin to improve during the first few days of treatment with neomycin, polymyxin, bacitracin, and hydrocortisone combination. If redness, irritation, swelling, or pain do not improve or get worse, stop using the medication and call your doctor.
