Antibiotics For Dogs Dental Infection

What Causes A Tooth Root Abscess

Natural Antibiotics to PREVENT and TREAT Infection

A tooth root abscess forms when bacteria enter the exposed root canal of the tooth. The crown of a healthy tooth is covered by enamel. Enamel is essentially impervious, preventing bacteria from entering into the tooth. Beneath the enamel is a different dental hard tissue known as dentin. Dentin contains approximately 300-400,000 small openings that communicate with the center of the tooth. In the center of the tooth is the pulp cavity which contains the soft tissue . The tissue in the pulp cavity is collectively referred to as the pulp. The pulp nurtures the normal tooth.

“A tooth root abscess forms when bacteria enter the exposed root canal of the tooth.”

If the protective tooth enamel is chipped, thereby exposing underlying dentin or the tooth is fractured more deeply exposing the pulp, bacteria can gain access to the center of the tooth. In dogs, tooth fractures most often occur as a result of chewing on hard things such as bone, crate bars, antlers, ice cubes, cow or pig hooves, or hard nylon toys.

A tooth root abscess may also occur secondary to periodontal disease. In this scenario, the infection does not travel down to the bone through the center of the tooth, but rather tracks along the outside of the tooth through the supportive tissues that surround the root.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Dog Tooth Abscess

Dogs with tooth root abscesses may have one or more of the following signs:

  • Swelling beneath the eyethe roots of the fourth upper premolar and first upper molar teeth lie right beneath the eye. An abscess of these roots can cause swelling beneath the eye and a swollen face. The abscess may burst and release pus. It can be easy to mistake this for a wound on your dogs face.
  • Swelling under the chin or along the lower jawan abscess involving the roots of the lower premolar or molar teeth may cause a swelling along the lower jaw, which can burst and form a wound.
  • Red gumsan infection of the tooth causes inflammation and redness of the gums.
  • Bad breaththe bacteria involved in a tooth root abscess often cause a nasty odor to the breath.
  • Painsigns can be subtle, but you may notice pawing at the face or chewing more on one side of the mouth than the other.

Dogs And Dental Antibiotics

If your dog needs to have a veterinary dental treatment, this will usually involve the use of antibiotics as well. Many dogs will need to have their teeth deep cleaned under anaesthetic by the vets at some point in their lives, although if you begin brushing your dogs teeth when they are still young, you may be able to avoid the need for this entirely.

Dental deep-cleaning at the vets may be required if your dog has bad breath and other dental problems, such as an excessive plaque and tartar build-up, loose or rotting teeth, or problems with the gums such as gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Because the mouth of the dog is a fairly dirty place laden with bacteria, particularly if your dog also has dental disease or rotting teeth, antibiotics are a normal part of resolving dental problems in the dog, along with deep cleaning. If the bacteria levels in your dogs mouth are high, these can not only attack the teeth and gums themselves, but also be digested and cause problems in the stomach and digestive system too.

In this article, we will look at dental antibiotics and when and why they are used in more detail. Read on to learn more!

Two Methods To Address A Tooth Root Abscess

Antibiotics and pain medications can temporarily help with the symptoms of a tooth root abscess, and are given as a bridge until your dog is scheduled for a dental procedure. Its important to point out that the only way to bring your dog true relief is through one of the following two procedures:

    1. Extraction of the tooth

In this case, your veterinarian will carefully remove the entire infected tooth. Then he or she will clean all the infected material out of the tooth socket. Finally, your vet will suture the gums closed. The sutures are absorbable and your dogs gums will heal completely in 10 to 14 days. This is the option that most general practice vets will be able to offer.

    2. Root canal therapy

Root canals in dogs are very similar to root canals in humans. Performing a root canal requires specialized equipment and training, so your vet will likely refer your dog to a veterinary dentist if you choose to go this route. The veterinary dentist will remove the infected pulp tissue from the tooth and replace it with dental material.

Veterinary dentists typically do root canal therapy on the largest and most functional teethlike the canine teeth or the large premolars and molars. It is important to note that not all teeth are candidates for root canal therapy for a variety of reasons. Your veterinary dentist can advise you on the best option based on how much of the crown of the tooth is damaged, how bad the infection is, and the overall health of the tooth.

    Dental Antibiotics Prior To Procedure

When to have dog infected abscessed tooth pulled?! Symptoms and treatment for infected dog tooth.

If a pet has a lot of bacteria in his mouth, a dentist will prescribe an antibiotic treatment, which begins a few days before a dental procedure. This treatment will continue for a few days after the procedure. The goal of prescribing antibiotics before a dental procedure is to treat or prevent the chance of an oral infection.

When an animal has tartar or gingivitis, they have gums that will bleed. If the gums bleed, there is a greater chance that bacteria will enter the oral wound, causing an infection.

How To Manage A Tooth Abscess

What if you are unable to seek dental treatment right away?

If you have a tooth abscess and cannot seek urgent dental care, there are a few things you can do to manage it until the opportunity for dental treatment arises.

First, you need to reach out to a doctor for a prescription for antibiotics. As we mentioned earlier, the antibiotics cannot completely cure the infection. However, they are an important tool in stopping the spread of the infection. They can also relieve some of the pain by reducing the pressure of the infection inside the jawbone. You can call your medical or dentist if you have a good relationship with him or her. You can also go to a local urgent care facility. One option that is gaining in popularity is telemedicine, so you may be able to have a virtual doctor consult and receive a prescription for the medication necessary to stop this abscess from worsening.

You can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol and Advil in an alternating schedule to manage your pain. We recommend warm salt-water rinses for one to two minutes of vigorous swishing. You can do this four to five times per day, and it will flush out bacteria from the abscess, reducing inflammation and keeping the site clean.

    Periodontal Disease And Abscessed Teeth

Can periodontal disease cause a tooth to be abscessed? Sometimes it can. Periodontal disease starts at the margin of the gumline when plaque bacteria infect the gingival tissues and progress down the root of the tooth. Plaque bacteria cause an intense reaction of the immune system that results in the breakdown of the bone and soft tissues around a tooth. If the infection progresses all the way down to the tip of a root, a true abscess may occur and result in the pulp becoming infected through the apex rather than the crown of a tooth. This is often referred to as a perio-endo infected tooth.

Teeth that have periodontal infection can often be treated and saved if the infection has not excessively destroyed surrounding tissues and infected the pulp. However, periodontally infected teeth that have become perio-endo teeth most often should be surgically extracted.

Who Needs Antibiotics Before Dental Work

7 Antibiotics Often Used To Treat Infections In Dogs

Most patients don’t require antibiotics before dental work. Immune systems are more than capable of handling these bacteria, but there are some people who may need antibiotics after oral surgery. This may include those have had or have:

    • Heart conditions, including congenital heart defects and disease
    • An artificial heart valve
    • Knee or hip replacement surgery
    • Infective endocarditis

Always make sure to share your full medical history with your doctor before surgery or dental work, even if you think it’s not relevant, so they know if they need to prescribe antibiotics before or after dental work.

Where & Why Do Tooth Abscesses Occur

The apex, or root tip, is the most common location for an abscess to happen. The most common cause is endodontic disease, or infection of the pulp of a tooth. Pulp tissue is found in the pulp cavity of each tooth and is made up mostly of blood vessels and nerves. A pulp infection most often occurs when the crown of a tooth is fractured, and the pulp chamber is exposed. This allows bacteria to have a free passage through the pulp cavity down to the apex of the root. If left untreated, this will always result in an abscess around the root apex.

Sometimes crown fractures that do not expose the pulp cavity, but do expose the dentin below the crowns enamel, can result in an abscess if the pulp is not able to protect itself and seal the dentin internally. Occasionally, the pulp can become infected without a crown fracture when bacteria enter the pulp through the bloodstream. The classic presentation of this type of dental abscess is when a dog or cat presents with a swollen face from an abscess of a maxillary tooth. Sometimes the swelling can progress to the point where the abscess actually ruptures through the soft tissues of the face. You can imagine how painful this process is!

    Host Resistance And Disease Modifiers

As aforementioned, although not being the cause of acute inflammation, disease modifiers, such as diabetes, genetic polymorphisms, and herpesvirus infection, may influence the host response to infection and predispose to more severe forms of apical periodontitis. Whether the overlap of any of these disease modifiers with the microbiological factors listed above is required for the development of acute forms of the disease remains to be determined.

    Antibiotics Drug Interactions And Warnings

Certain medications can interact with some antibiotics. Some combinations will reduce the effectiveness of one or both drugs, but others can lead to toxicity. Tell your vet about all medications and supplements that your dog is on before starting antibiotics. Avoid starting new medications or supplements while your dog is on antibiotics unless your vet are advises you to do so.

Treating Abscessed Teeth In Dogs & Cats

Home Remedies for Tooth Infection in Dogs

When an endodontic pulp infection takes place there are only two treatment options. Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp tissue and disinfects the pulp canal. The canal is then filled with a dental filling material through a process called obturation. The entrance to the canal is then sealed with dental composite material. Fractured teeth treated with root canal therapy are often prepared for a metal crown which is fabricated and cemented in place about 2 weeks later.

Root canal therapy is most often performed on the most strategically important teeth, including the canine and carnassial teeth. When this procedure is performed by a veterinary dental specialist, it has a very good prognosis and most often will last the lifetime of the pet.

If root canal therapy is not chosen, the only other option is to perform a surgical extraction of the tooth. This most often involves some type of surgical incision, removal of surrounding bone and complete extraction of the crown and root or roots of a tooth. The extraction site is then closed with suture material that dissolves over 2-4 weeks.

The decision between root canal therapy and surgical extraction can be difficult for a pet owner. While recovery from a root canal is far easier on a pet than extraction, the only wrong treatment decision with an endodontically infected tooth is to do nothing and leave this painful abscessed tooth in place.

When To Administer Antibiotic For Dog Tooth Infection

Antibiotic treatment for dog tooth infection should be administered as soon as the dog shows signs of pain. It is important to note that antibiotic treatment cannot cure a tooth abscess, but it can help with the symptoms such as swelling and redness.

As soon as you see your dog displaying any discomfort or if he starts limping, we recommend you visit your veterinarian. Your vet will most likely prescribe an antibiotic to reduce inflammation and pain on the affected area.

    What Causes A Tooth Infection

The primary cause of a tooth infection is dental caries, or tooth decay. Your mouth is full of bacteria all the time, but usually that bacteria doesnt get inside your teeth where it can cause an infection. When decay causes cavities and cracks or holes in your teeth, bacteria can seep into your teeth and cause a tooth infection. An infection can also happen if you have an injury to your tooth that causes a crack or a chip in the tooth. Keeping your teeth strong and healthy through regular brushing and flossing can help prevent decay and infections.

Infection can happen in different parts of the tooth. Sometimes the infection occurs on the side of the tooth if there is an opening there and that can cause the infection to spread to the gums. Pockets of pus called abscesses can form around the infection that will need to be drained by the dentist for the infection to go away.

What Types Of Infections Do Antibiotics Treat How Do They Work

Cephalexin Oral Suspension, Oral Pet Antibiotic

Antibiotics come in two forms: Bacteriostatic and bactericidal. Each are used depending on the type of condition present.

Bacteriostatic antibiotics work by preventing bacteria from growing and reproducing. This gives the hosts body enough time to fight off the infection using its natural immune system defenses.

Bactericidal antibiotics kill the bacteria outright.

Both types work to disinfect individuals from a host of bacterial infections, and they can come in the form of tablets, capsules, liquids, and topical ointments.

    In dogs, antibiotics can treat:

    • Wound infections
    • Soft tissue, bone, and dental infections
