Unexplained Rashes On Skin

Eczema | What Causes Eczema | Eczema Treatment

Alex Tree Some laundry detergents can cause skin reactions. Some causes of an unexplained rash are an allergic reaction, abrasive clothing, and chronic fatigue syndrome. An allergic reaction is an especially common cause of unexplained rashes, but the patient often never finds out what he or she came into contact with that triggered the reaction.

Eczema Coping Tips Avoid Changes In Temperature

Abrupt temperature and humidity changes can sometimes irritate the skin for example, going in and out of air-conditioned buildings on hot days or heated buildings on cold days.Hard physical activity or exercise that makes you sweat heavily can also trigger the itch of eczema.Suggestions include:

  • In winter, dont overheat your house. Dress warmly when going outdoors and remove the extra layers as soon as you return.
  • In summer, dont over cool your house. Air conditioners can dry out the air and irritate your skin.
  • Avoid hard physical activity in hot weather. For example, do your gardening first thing in the morning, or in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky.

What Are The Treatments For Severe Hand Eczema

If your hand eczema is severe, discuss the possibility of a dermatology referral with your GP. The referral may be for diagnosing contact allergy or for treatment, which may include a short course of oral steroids or immunosuppressants . Alternatively, dermatology departments may recommend alitretinoin or phototherapy, as described below.

Swelling And Redness In Your Lower Legs May Not Require Treatment With Antibiotics

If one or both of your lower legs are swollen and red, visit your doctor to find out why. In most cases, if both of your lower legs are swollen and red at the same time, its not because of an infection. That means you dont need antibiotics.

There are many other reasons why your lower legs could be swollen and red. For instance, you could have varicose veins or a blood clot in your leg. You could have an allergy to something you touched, such as a detergent or soap. Leg swelling could even be a sign of heart disease.

Before prescribing an antibiotic, your doctor should talk to you and do any tests needed to rule out these problems. Even then, you should take antibiotics only if theres a clear sign of an infection like cellulitis. Thats a common skin infection that causes redness and swelling.

Emollients For Treating Eczema

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): Overview and More

Emollient creams add moisture to the skin. Apply moisturisers each day to clean, dry skin. It is especially important to moisturise after showering and bathing, and when living or working in an air-conditioned or heated environment. You may need to try several different brands until you find the emollient that works best for you. Ask your doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist for advice.

How To Choose A Probiotic When You Have Eczema

The reason Ive published this, is not to scare you off probiotic supplements, but because I think its important for anyone taking them to be well-informed.

Now that doesnt mean you have to rule out supplements all together some people may experience eczema benefits while using a good probiotic, and some people may need one as prescribed by their doctor.

If you really need a probiotic, heres a checklist to help you choose a good one:

Choose a multi-strain

Our gut will have the most health benefits if we are able to stimulate a variety of strains for good bacteria growth. This is why youll often see probiotic supplement strains claiming to have TRILLIONS of strains for improved health benefits.

Single strains have two problems: 1) because theyre just one strain, they cannot adequately interact with all the various niches in your gut, and 2) you cannot know for sure if that particular single strain will properly stimulate YOUR bacteria, as everyones gut bacteria is different.

Multi-strains are a better choice, as they are able to reach more niches in the gut.The more strains to stimulate your gut, the better!

Know yourself before adding bacteria

As mentioned above, not everyones bacteria is the same, and some probiotics that work great for some, may not work well for you.

For example, some bacteria strains can create an excess of histamine. If youre sensitive to histamine, then you might find yourself breakout out more than not.

Keep it COLD

But dont worry.

What Were The Basic Results

Twenty studies met inclusion criteria, 13 of which were prospective studies and seven were cross-sectional. Most of the studies had looked at early life exposure to antibiotics, three at exposure in the womb, and one looked at both. Only five of the studies assessed the outcome of doctor-confirmed diagnoses of eczema, and five studies looked at medical records to provide evidence of antibiotic exposure. Thirteen studies relied on self-report of exposures and outcomes via questionnaires only.

Pooling the results for all 17 studies that had examined early life exposure to antibiotics, showed an overall 41% increased odds of developing eczema in children with antibiotic exposure 1.30 to 1.53).

Pooling the results for only the 10 prospective studies that had examined this outcome gave a similar 40% increased odds of eczema . Restricting analyses to only those studies with the highest quality also gave a similar risk figure .

There was a dose-response relationship, that is, greater dose leading to greater increase in risk. Each additional antibiotic course given during the first year of life was associated with a 7% increase in the odds of eczema .

The four studies that had assessed antenatal exposure to antibiotics did not find an association with eczema risk.

Antibiotics In Infancy Linked To Eczema

By Kathryn Doyle, Reuters Health

4 Min Read

NEW YORK – In a new review of previous research, children who took antibiotics in their first year of life were about 40 percent more likely to develop eczema, an itchy skin disorder.

Kids exposure to antibiotics taken by their mothers during pregnancy was not tied to the common rash, however, according to the results published in the British Journal of Dermatology

Experts said the new study supports the idea that antibiotics destroy intestinal microbes that play an important role in the immune systems development after birth.

The hygiene hypothesis suggests that babies and children whose immune systems are not exposed to enough challenges because their environment is too clean may be prone later in life to immune overreactions like allergies and asthma.

This study brings us closer to understanding the possible link between antibiotics and eczema, Dr. Ruchi Gupta, director of the program for maternal and child health at Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago, told Reuters Health by email.

They may be linked through the hygiene hypothesis, said Gupta, who was not involved in the new study. Throwing one element of the delicate developing immune system off-kilter could result in allergic skin reactions like eczema, she said.

Patients are often prescribed steroid medications to treat the problem.

Tsakok and her coauthors did not respond by press time to a request for comments.

Preventing The Spread Of Impetigo

What is Eczema? Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

During treatment, it’s important to take precautions to minimise the risk of impetigo spreading to other people or to other areas of the body.

Most people are no longer contagious after 48 hours of treatment or once their sores have dried and healed. It’s important to stay away from work, school, nursery or playgroup until this point.

The advice below can also help to prevent the spread of the infection:

  • don’t share flannels, sheets or towels with anyone who has impetigo wash them at a high temperature after use
  • wash the sores with soap and water and cover them loosely with a gauze bandage or clothing
  • avoid touching or scratching the sores, or letting others touch them it may help to ensure your nails are kept clean and short
  • avoid contact with newborn babies, preparing food, playing contact sports, or going to the gym until the risk of infection has passed
  • wash your hands frequently particularly after touching infected skin
  • washable toys should also be washed wipe non-washable soft toys thoroughly with a cloth that has been wrung out in detergent and warm water and allowed to dry completely

If you think that the infection has spread to someone else, make sure they’re seen by a pharmacist as soon as possible.

How To Minimise A Healing Crisis

Rest You may feel excessively lethargic during this time so listen to your body and rest. Your body is working hard to remove chemicals and repair the skin from the inside out. Dont worry, positive changes are taking place. It takes about 28 days for the new skin cells to reach the surface of your skin so rest as much as you need to during this time. Its best to go to bed before 9pm, if possible, and stay away from electronic devides a couple of hours before bed to help improve sleep. Calcium Matrix PM can also help with improving sleep quality.

Drink lots of filtered water Filtered water, spring water and low-salicylate juices , are your best choices. These low-salicylate liquids will assist with flushing out toxins. Salicylates are food chemicals which can irritate the stomach lining and burden an over-burdened liver, so for a period of about 12-weeks they shouldbe limited .

During this time, avoid drinking coffee and all teas, even herbal teas as they can over-stimulate Phase 1 liver detoxification reactions, and they are rich sources of salicylates. If you are one of the 60-70% of eczema sufferers who are sensitive to salicylates then teas will make you itchier. Eczema sufferers are often sensitive to grasses and flowers so herbal teas should be avoided if you want the healing crisis to subside quickly.

Other high fibre foods include rolled/wholegrain oats, lentils, chick peas, beans , and oatbran.

Q 1: How Can Infections Due To Eczema Be Prevented And Treated

People with eczema that is not well managed can be more likely to have skin infections with bacteria such as Staph , and viruses such as the cold sore virus.

People with eczema who have infections need to treat these as they occur. They may also need long term prevention strategies, such as diluted bleach baths, which can help prevent future skin infections.

Long term oral antibiotics can be helpful for people who suffer from recurrent infected eczema.

Probiotic Supplements Safety Have Not Been Thoroughly Studied

Probiotics are being advertised as harmless or miracles for your gut, but there is still no proof that they will work for everyone or what the future consequences could be.

In 2012, countries in the European Union banned the advertising of probiotics in food, due to what they consider fake and outrageous health claims.

Dr. Lita Proctor, one of the leading minds in the studies of the human microbiome, who heads the National Institute of Health Human Microbiome Project quotes,

We are discovering a whole new ecosystem, but I do have some fear we all do in the field that the hype and potential over-promise will all back fire.

This hype is possibly the growing popularity of untested therapies such as DIY fecal transplants, and the wide sale of unregulated probiotics that could pose health threats to the public.

In fact, many scientists and physicians have cast significant doubt about whether probiotic supplements have much effect, especially since relatively little clinical research has been done to test them.

There has also been an issue of safety, as some probiotic strains have the potential to become pathogens.

Before taking a probiotic supplement consider that their long-term risks are still unknown.

While they may work for some people, we do not know everything there is to know about the human biome, and as such we cannot predict how probiotics will ultimately affect us, or how damaging their potential side effects could be in the long run.

Eczema Patients Lack Natural Antibiotic

What Causes Eczema In Older Adults

May Explain Why Skin Infections Are Common

Oct. 9, 2002 — Researchers report they now know why people with eczema are prone to developing recurrent skin infections, and they say the findings could lead to better treatments for the chronic skin disease.

A new study suggests that people with eczema lack natural, protective antibiotics in their skin that are present in people with other inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis. The study, published Oct. 10 in TheNew England Journal of Medicine, is the first to demonstrate a clinical significance for the naturally occurring antibiotics in humans.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects about 10% of infants and 3% of adults in the U.S., and is characterized by itchy, inflamed, easily irritated skin. Although the condition frequently improves during childhood or early adulthood, about half of patients are affected to some degree throughout life.

People with eczema are at increased risk for bacterial and viral skin infections, such as those caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and herpes simplex virus. The latest findings suggest this may be due to the fact that eczema patients fail to produce effective amounts of two antibiotic proteins identified last year by Richard Gallo, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of California, San Diego.

“This study helps explain why 90% of patients are colonized by Staphylococcus aureus and 30% develop active infections,” Leung says.

Can Antibiotics Cause Eczema In Children

29 June, 2013By NT Contributor

Antibiotics linked to eczema risk in children, The Daily Telegraph reports, saying that giving babies the drugs increases their chance of developing the condition by 40%.

However, concerned parents should not be put off allowing their children antibiotics on the strength of this news. The research it is based on cannot prove that antibiotics directly cause eczema and when a child is prescribed antibiotics, it is usually for a very good reason and they can be life-saving.

The headlines are based on a review of evidence of whether giving antibiotics during the first year of a babys life increases their risk of developing eczema.

Researchers identified 20 observational studies, most of which had examined early life rather than pregnancy exposure to antibiotics. The pooled results of the 10 studies that followed children up over time found that early life exposure was associated with a 40% increase in risk of child eczema.

However, there is the potential that the association could be influenced by other unmeasured factors. The review does not report on which confounding factors individual studies took into account, and it is likely that these differed between studies. Potential confounding factors that could be associated with both antibiotic use and childhood eczema include:

  • parental allergic illnesses
  • environmental factors
  • socioeconomic status

Dont Use Oral Antibiotics For Treatment Of Atopic Dermatitis Unless There Is Clinical Evidence Of Infection

Rationale and Comments:

The presence of high numbers of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on the skin of children and adults with atopic dermatitis is common. It is widely believed that staph bacteria may play a role in causing skin inflammation, but the routine use of oral antibiotic therapy to decrease the amount of bacteria on the skin has not been definitively shown to reduce the signs, symptoms , or severity of atopic dermatitis. In addition, if oral antibiotics are used when there is not an infection, it may lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. The use of oral antibiotics also can cause side effects, including hypersensitivity reactions, including exaggerated immune responses such as allergic reactions. Although it can be difficult to determine the presence of a skin infection in atopic dermatitis patients, oral antibiotics should only be used to treat patients with evidence of bacterial infection in conjunction with other standard and appropriate treatments for atopic dermatitis.
