Can Antibiotics Trigger A Yeast Infection

Antibiotics, Yeast Overgrowth, Ear and Sinus Infections – Kandice’s Story

Sadly, yes. The risk of getting a yeast infection after taking antibiotics is between 10-30%. All antibiotics can cause yeast infections, but there are a few factors that can determine your likelihood of getting a yeast infection after a course of antibiotics.

Having Candida already present in your vaginal microbiome can put you at a higher risk of developing a yeast infection after antibiotic treatment. Some research shows that having BV can increase your risk of developing a yeast infection after taking antibiotics, as well.

Moreover, vaginal application of antibiotics seems to carry the highest risk of yeast infections, especially with clindamycin and metronidazole, which are often prescribed to treat BV. Interestingly, tetracyclines prescribed for long-term acne are also identified as a specific risk factor for Candida overgrowth. Because apparently wanting clear skin and no yeast infections is too much to ask! â

  • Whether or not youâve had antibiotic-induced yeast infections in the past
  • Having a susceptibility to yeast infections
  • Existing vulvar diseases, like lichen sclerosus
  • The type of antibiotic
  • Taking estrogen therapy or steroids

What Type Of Antibiotics Can Cause A Yeast Infection

Not all antibiotics will necessarily trigger a yeast infection in fact, it is mainly broad-spectrum ones that will likely cause this effect, and you may be wondering what these are exactly. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are designed to act against a wide range of disease-causing bacteria, rather than a narrow spectrum. The most common types of antibiotics include:

  • Tetracyclines these are mainly prescribed for acne, UTIs, infections of the gut and eyes, sexually-transmitted diseases, and gum disease.
  • Quinolones these are predominantly used to treat more stubborn UTIs, pneumonia, and bacterial prostatitis.
  • Broad-spectrum Penicillins such as amoxicillin or ampicillin, used to treat respiratory ailments or infections of the ear, mouth, skin, or gums.
  • Carbapenems these drugs are usually reserved for treating severe or high-risk bacterial infections that show resistance to other antibiotics.

Can A Yeast Infection Be Prevented

You can prevent some yeast infections by doing these things:

  • Use good oral hygiene to help prevent yeast infection in your mouth . This includes brushing and flossing your teeth every day and using mouthwash as needed.
  • Wear cotton underwear to help to prevent a vaginal or genital yeast infection. If you are a woman and get vaginal yeast infections often, you may want to take probiotics.
  • Keep areas where skin rubs up against skin dry and try to reduce friction.

How About Home Remedies For Yeast Infection

You may actually have a natural remedy for yeast infection in your pantry. The best one is coconut oil. You can mix 6 tablespoons with a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil and pour the mixture into a suppository tray.

Leave it in the fridge until solid and insert one suppository before going to bed for 7 consecutive days.

This treatment may be very effective, especially if you catch your infection early before the yeast cells proliferate in large numbers. If your infection is already full-blown, go for boric acid suppositories instead.

Never a good idea to just stop taking that was prescribed, so I would encourage you to contact the prescribing physician asap, also, the over counter things are in your power to discontinue , so it may be a good idea to stop those until you can get better direction from your Doc. Hope this helps, hope you get this resolved soon.

balbanese,I will try to be nice, but I have a pressing question … why are you writing three line answers, apparently regarding situations and medical problems with the almost same, trite, condescending response when you have no idea what you are talking about? The people that are asking these questions want real answers. Are you in some kind of race to increase your status on this site as that has been the only reason I’ve been able to come up with. Not wanting to be assinine, but what’s up?Hippie

Also, just to let you know, a yeast infection is not a medical emergency. By the time her doc gets to the office after Memorial Day, that poor girl will be feeling much better. And there are a lot of incidences when stopping a prescribed medication is appropriate. I wonder if you can think of any… give you a clue… starts with an A…

SeeknFind

Seek, I wonder that same question. Do you think we will ever get a truthful answer. I don’t have it blocked, balbanese, honestly so I can follow his answers and try to clean up as best I can after it.Just sayin’,

Candida Yeast Infection & Antibiotics Connection: Can Antibiotics Cause Candida Yeast Infections?

This article will discuss antibiotics, ways in which you can get exposed to them knowingly or unknowingly, and detail all that you need to know about antibiotics and candida connection.

Antibiotics what these are?

Antibiotics are exactly what the name says they are: Anti = against, biotic = living component these are chemical compounds, some of which kill good and bad bacteria, others kill fungi, while some others kill protozoans . Generally, these are medications that are used to treat infections. In some instances, certain antibiotics can be used to even kill cancer cells and form a part of chemotherapy for cancer. Antibiotics cannot kill viruses and are of no use against viral infections.

Related articles:

Fungi and soil bacteria produce these compounds naturally to compete against other microorganisms. Historically, antibiotics were obtained from these microorganisms. Now there are methods that modify these natural antibiotics to produce what are known as semisynthetic antibiotics. There are also chemical methods to synthesize antibiotics from scratch and these are called as synthetic antibiotics.

Risk Factors For Developing Yeast Infections While On Antibiotics

If you are someone who’s prone to yeast infections, then you’re more likely to get one while on antibiotics, both doctors agreed. Both also mentioned diabetes as another risk factor. “When a woman is diabetic, she has issues with her metabolism and her blood sugar can go up. Yeast feeds off of that sugar,” Dr. Garcia said.

Dr. Powell noted that if you’ve had a yeast infection from antibiotics before, you’re more prone to it happening again. And, when someone is being treated for bacterial vaginosis, a common vaginal infection characterized by the overgrowth of bacteria, topical clindamycin can also cause symptoms of a yeast infection, she said.

Why Do Antibiotics Cause Yeast Infections?

When my doctor prescribed antibiotics for my sinus infection, I ended up with a vaginal yeast infection. Antibiotics can change the delicate balance in your vagina by wiping out the good bacteria in the vagina that keep yeast growth in check. Without that good bacteria, yeast can multiply rapidly and cause an infection, with its many uncomfortable symptoms . It was my first yeast infection, so I called my doctor to make sure everything was ok. She reassured me vaginal yeast infections are very common, and treating them was as easy as going to my local pharmacy to pick up MONISTAT®.

Treatment Of Vaginal Thrush

There are several treatment options for yeast infection. Mild cases last for a few days. In addition, conditions may improve even without treatment. On the other hand, moderate and severe infections can last up to two weeks and require treatment.

OTC medication. Mild infections can be treated by antifungal creams that need to be directly applied to the vagina. In addition, you may use vaginal pessaries containing clotrimazole as an active ingredient.

Prescription medication. The doctor may prescribe strong antifungal agents for more serious cases of thrush. Common prescriptions include fluconazole, nystatin, and itraconazole.

The Link Between Yeast Infections And Antibiotics

Antibiotics that are prescribed to kill bacteria and fight infection can also kill healthy bacteria in the process.

This creates an imbalance in your body, which can sometimes make you more susceptible to an overgrowth of candida albicans fungus.

The predominant group of bacteria that naturally occurs in a healthy vagina is Lactobacillus.

These bacteria help protect against infection- and disease-causing agents .

These bacteria can be killedor have their growth stalledwhen certain antibiotics are taken.

When your body does not have enough Lactobacillus, your vagina becomes less acidic.

This creates a more favorable environment for yeast to grow.

Like I mentioned earlier in this post, applying a good oil to the outer layer of your vagina will help protect or heal your skin barrier. When you have a yeast infection, the itching can be uncontrollable. Anything can irritate it such as toilet paper and underwear.

Dont skip this step if you really want to start seeing some improvements.

The best coconut oil should be organic and unrefined. Unrefined could also be called Virgin Coconut Oil. This means the coconut oil has not been processed. Refined coconut oil has been depleted of its good benefits. A refined coconut oil will have no taste or smell.

I love Nutiva as it is organic, virgin and inexpensive.
