However, it should be noted that since retinoids like tretinoin only produce partial clearing of acne, they are almost always prescribed alongside other treatments.
Tretinoin has been one of the primary acne treatments for over 40 years, largely because of its ability to:

Acne In Female Patients
Recently, there has been a reversal in the advice on the interaction of oral antibiotics and COC. Guidance from the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare states that additional contraceptive precautions are not required during or after courses of antibiotics that do not induce enzymes.3 Oral and topical erythromycin and topical benzoyl peroxide can be used in pregnancy.11

The drug co-cyprindiol, which contains cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol, is useful in female patients.1 Its product licence is for severe acne in women refractory to prolonged oral antibacterial therapy and moderately severe hirsutism 3 it treats the acne and also provides contraception . It is, however, slow to act and this is best combined with other acne therapies, and should not be used as monotherapy.13 Co-cyprindiol is associated with an increased risk of thromboembolic disease.1,3 Treatment should be discontinued three-to-four menstrual cycles after the womans acne has resolved and be replaced by an acne-friendly pill such as a COC pill.14 General practitioners could perform an audit to ensure that women whose acne has resolved are not still receiving co-cyprindiol.

At any given moment, theres a small possibility that a pimple might have been caused by a type of bacteria that Neosporin is designed to kill. Just like oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics inhibit the growth of bacteria. A chief cause of acne is the proliferation of the acne-causing bacteria Propionibacteria acnes, or P. acnes.
This bacterium is an ordinary resident of the skin, but in those with acne the P. acnes population grows out of control. These bacteria irritate the skin’s follicles, creating inflamed papules and pustules.
Applying a topical antibiotic reduces the amount of P. acnes, which in turn helps control acne. Topical antibiotics also reduce inflammation, so they work best for inflamed breakouts rather than non-inflamed blemishes or blackheads.
