Exactly What Is A Uti
A UTI happens when some portion of your urinary tract gets infected with bacteria. Your bladder is the part of your urinary tract thats usually infected when you have a UTI. Normally, bladder infections arent serious and can be treated easily with prescription medications.
Sometimes your kidney, another part of your urinary tract, can become infected. A kidney infection can be more serious. Even if your UTI starts off as a minor bladder infection, not treating it could cause the infection to spread to your kidneys.
We already know that UTIs affect women more often than men, but any of the following risk factors can increase your risk of getting a UTI even more:
- Using diaphragms or spermicides as birth control
- Kidney stones
- Catheter placement
Treatment Concerns For Antibiotics
While most UTIs can be effectively managed and treated with a course of antibiotics, more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to different types of antibiotics due to mutations in their genetic code. Every time you take an antibiotic, the bacteria that are in your system are more likely to adapt and mutate and become resistant to the administered antibiotic. And since recurrence rates in the case of UTIs are high, its a strong possibility that an antibiotic may not be effective every time. Many antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin, and sulfonamides are no longer effective against stronger mutated bacteria and hence are not a good choice for combatting these infections.
Antibiotics can also have adverse effects on the flora of the gut and the vagina. Many antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones cannot be prescribed to pregnant women because of the concerns that they might have a possible toxic effect on the fetus.
Other health risks and adverse effects associated with antibiotics for the treatment of urinary tract infections include extreme allergic reactions and numerous side effects. These can include:
- Nausea and vomiting
Another potential risk of taking antibiotics is that they might destroy some of the good bacteria residing in your system that help with your systematic bodily functions without harming you. The death of these bacteria opens up the passageway to a whole new range of possible infections.

Antibiotics Or Uva Ursi
Unfortunately, UTIs occur at an incidence of 10 percent per year and account for about 2 percent of all primary care outpatient visits. It is estimated that 93 percent of women with a UTI receive medications . More than 20 percent of urine pathogens are resistant to TMP/SMX and cephalosporins. Half are resistant to amoxicillin. Part of the problem is that antibiotics have been given too freely and for too long so that there is the development of resistant strains that no longer can be killed by the antibiotic. In fact, having used antibiotics before seems to be a risk factor for having a resistant organism in the urine.
One of the answers to this antibiotic dilemma is to delay an antibiotic prescription for a few days as many women will resolve their UTI after just drinking plenty of fluids and urinating often. This has resulted in somewhat fewer antibiotic prescriptions in UTIs . Still, you want to be able to take something for the UTI in hope to help the healing process. Besides taking ibuprofen for UTI that can help reduce the inflammation and pain, there are herbal preparations that might ease bladder pain and make it easier to tolerate a delayed prescription for a UTI. Uva Ursi has the potential to decrease the use of antibiotics altogether.

What Did This Study Do
This randomised controlled trial was conducted in 17 general practices in Switzerland. It included 253 adult women with symptoms and urine dipstick positive for white blood cells and/or nitrites. Pregnant women and those with possible kidney infection were excluded, as were women with various other medical conditions.
Women were given the antibiotic norfloxacin or the NSAID diclofenac for three days. Both drugs had the same appearance and dosing frequency, so neither women nor doctors knew which treatment was given. A rescue antibiotic was available to all women if symptoms persisted after three days.
The initial plan was to recruit 400 women, but recruitment was slow and terminated early. However, the researchers calculated they had sufficient women to reliably detect a difference in outcomes.

Why Is Ibuprofen Bad For Uti
The May 2018 study published in PLOS Medicine analyzed 383 women with UTIs, 178 of whom used antibiotics for three days, and 181 of whom used ibuprofen as a symptomatic treatment without any antibiotics. Then, the researchers monitored the participants symptoms, bacterial growth from urinary samples, and any adverse effects that occurred. As it turned out, women who received ibuprofen without antibiotics took three days longer to get well on average.
By day four of treatment, 74 percent of those who took antibiotics had recovered, while only 39 percent of the folks who took ibuprofen could say the same. The news was even worse for some women in the ibuprofen group: 6.6 percent of them developed a and 3.9 percent of them developed a serious kidney infection. Neither of those awful problems happened in the antibiotic group.
So in other words, using ibuprofen without antibiotics for UTIs not only leads to a potentially longer time experiencing the symptoms, but also the possibility of more serious health complications down the line. Yikes! If anyone ever tries to convince you to use just ibuprofen for UTIs, remember that these results pretty much speak for themselves.
Even though some women in the study did get better without taking antibiotics, the researchers concluded that it is not safe to recommend ibuprofen instead of antibiotics for UTIs, mostly due to the increased risk of developing a more serious infection.
