What Are The Symptoms

The most common symptoms of strep throat are:

  • A sudden, severe sore throat.
  • Pain when you swallow.
  • Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes.
  • White or yellow spots on the back of a bright red throat.

You may also have a headache and belly pain. Less common symptoms are a red skin rash, vomiting, not feeling hungry, and body aches.

Strep throat can be passed from person to person. When a person who has strep throat breathes, coughs, or sneezes, tiny droplets with the strep bacteria go into the air. These droplets can be breathed in by other people. If you come into contact with strep, it will take 2 to 5 days before you start to have symptoms.

What Are Resistant Bacteria

Each time you take an antibiotic, bacteria are killed. Sometimes, bacteria causing infections are already resistant to prescribed antibiotics. Bacteria may also become resistant during treatment of an infection. Resistant bacteria do not respond to the antibiotics and continue to cause infection. A common misconception is that a person’s body becomes resistant to specific medicines. However, it is the bacteria, not people, that become resistant to the medicines.

Each time you take or give your child an antibiotic unnecessarily or improperly, you increase the chance of developing medicine-resistant bacteria. Therefore, it is critically important to take antibiotics only when necessary. Because of these resistant bacteria, some diseases that used to be easy to treat are now becoming nearly impossible to treat.

Bacteria can develop resistance to certain medicines:

The Majority Of Sore Throats Do Not Need Antibiotics And Medicated Lozenges May Only Help To Reduce Pain By A Small Amount Nice Says

26 January 2018

Final guidance, developed by NICE and Public Health England, advises GP and healthcare professionals how they should treat sore throat, a common respiratory tract infection.

Respiratory tract infections are one of the main reasons people visit their GP,

Evidence reviewed by NICE found most people will get better without antibiotics, usually experiencing symptoms for up to a week. However, research suggests antibiotics are prescribed in 60% of cases.

NICE says healthcare professionals shouldnt prescribe antibiotics. Instead they should help people to manage their symptoms with pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

The guideline notes that some adults may wish to try medicated lozenges containing either a local anaesthetic, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or an antiseptic. However, they should be told these may only help to reduce pain by a small amount.

Dr Tessa Lewis, GP and chair of the managing common infections guidance committee, said: Paracetamol can help to relieve pain and control temperature. Medicated lozenges might not reduce the pain by much, but some people may choose to use them.

People who have a sore throat caused by bacteria, sometimes referred to as strep-throat, are more likely to benefit from antibiotics.

How Long Does Strep Throat Last

Strep throat will only last 3 to 7 days with or without treatment. Doctors usually treat strep throat with antibiotics even though they will not make you well any faster. Strep throat contagiousness will continue for 24 hours once antibiotics are started. With no treatment, strep throat continues to be contagious until symptoms resolve.

In response to the persistent overuse of antibiotics for strep throat, the journalCanadian Family Physician states:

symptoms caused by a bacterial sore throat fail to clear much faster when treated with antibiotics than they would if left alone.

It is certainly easier and quicker to hand out prescriptions every time than to explain and reassure. Each time we do this, however, we reinforce patients fears.

Do family physicians have to declare a conflict of interest in answering these questions? If we were to lower ourselves to examining the vulgar subject of money, it is certainly in our financial interest to keep many patients scared enough to rush to our offices whenever they get sore throats.

In view of the large number of antibiotics prescribed for sore throats, perhaps it is time to review whether we should be using such treatment for strep throat infections at all.

How Can You Tell If You Have Strep Throat

The only way to diagnose strep throat is with a throat swab. Your healthcare provider will rub the back of your throat with a medical swab that looks like a long Q-tip. A rapid strep test or a throat culture can look for the streptococcus bacteria on the swab.

But how can you tell if its worth going to get a strep test in the first place? Your symptoms will give you an important clue.

When sore throats are caused by viruses, people usually experience some or all of the following:

  • Cough

  • Daycare center workers

  • Healthcare providers who work with children

If you have symptoms that are more consistent with strep throat or if you are at risk of having strep throat because of your age or job you should see a healthcare provider for a strep test. If you arent sure about your symptoms or risk, its better to see a healthcare provider and have a strep test done. This is especially important for children and teens, as they are more likely to develop complications from strep throat.

How To Treat Strep Throat

Because strep throat is caused by bacteria and not a virus it can be treated with prescription antibiotics. Penicillin antibiotics, like amoxicillin, are the most effective treatment for strep, says Nate Favini, MD, medical lead of Forward, a preventive primary care practice.

Antibiotics are typically prescribed for a 10-day course of treatment. Symptoms usually resolve within one to three days of starting treatment, but it’s important to finish the course of antibiotics to keep the infection from returning and to reduce the risk of the bacteria becoming resistant to the medication.

If left untreated, strep can resolve on its own in about seven days, but antibiotics help reduce symptoms, shorten the duration of the illness, and can prevent more serious complications, Favini says.

However, you should only take antibiotics if you’ve been diagnosed with strep throat by a doctor. In many cases, a sore throat can be caused by a viral infection like the cold or flu, and if you don’t actually have strep from a bacterial infection, taking antibiotics can have adverse effects on your immune system.

In addition, Favini says a sore throat due to a virus will typically get better within a few days, but strep throat can last as long as a week.
