A Hard Pill To Swallow: Oral Medication Prescribing Rights For Optometrists

Does VA pay for EXPENSIVE eye medications? | Department of Veterans Affairs | theSITREP

Australian optometrists are not permitted to prescribe oral medication, in contrast to comparative countries where their counterparts have been prescribing them for years. Insight investigates why this is the case in Australia.

Optometrists in the UK have been permitted to prescribe oral medications since 2008. In New Zealand it has been since 2014, while in Canada, optometrists have lists they can prescribe from in different provinces. And in the US, 45 of 50 states have introduced legislation allowing optometrists oral prescribing powers.

But for Australian optometrists, their prescribing authority is limited to topical ocular medications such as eye drops and ointments, which can only be authorised by the countrys 4,135 therapeutically-endorsed optometrists. When it comes to oral drugs, all must refer patients to GPs or ophthalmologists.

Optometry Australia , the professions national peak body, has strongly advocated to turn this around. It says the need to visit a second health practitioner for a simple prescription can mean additional patient cost as well as a loss of convenience. In some cases, patients will not access the oral medication, potentially putting their eye-health at risk.

Less Common Eye Infections

1) Trachoma is a serious eye infection that affects the inner eyelid. The infection leads to scarring and an in-turning of the eyelid causing the eyelashes to damage the corneal tissue and over time causing permanent blindness.

This infection is spread by flies in unsanitary conditions, with the threat of reinfection a common problem. Good hygiene is crucial in preventing trachoma, and oral antibiotics are vital for controlling the infection.

2) Endophthalmitis is generally caused by bacteria from a penetrating eye injury, and is a serious inner-eye infection. In rare cases, this type of infection can occur from an eye surgery complication, such as cataract surgery.

Urgent medical treatment with strong oral antibiotics is crucial to prevent significant vision loss or even blindness.

An optometrist examines all parts of the visual system affecting the eyes. He or she can treat and manage visual problems stemming from injuries, illnesses, diseases, and accidents. Theyre more expensive and exclusive than other types of eye doctors most of the time because they provide more specialized eye care.

Then there are optometrists. These are widespread and are able to perform eye exams, treat basic vision conditions like astigmatism and nearsightedness, prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses and detect diseases and disorders related to the eyes.

At the lowest tier you find opticians. These eye doctors are ocular experts too, but they dont have the level of knowledge the other two types have. They cant give eye exams and prescribe eyeglasses or contacts. Their main role is filling prescriptions from other eye doctors.

Opticians check prescriptions, provide and adjust glasses and contacts, take facial measurements and deal with the products used in an eye doctors work.
