They are not considered particularly important in human medicine, although they are occasionally used. However, studies report that the prophylactic use of sulfonamides in agriculture selects for bacteria with multi-drug resistant properties, which may be resistant to medically crucial antibiotics in humans. Therefore, even the use of medicinally non-essential chicken antibiotics could lead to destructive results in human health.
- Fluoroquinolones: Used as mass medication for humans and chickens, fluoroquinolones are often used to treat respiratory infections in chickens, which are common due to the ammonia-dense air in factory farms. Thirty-two million doses of fluoroquinolones are sold to people in the US each year. They are banned in American agriculture for their role in creating antibiotic-resistant strains of campylobacter but are still utilized in agriculture in China, the EU, the U.K., and Brazil where there is now a far higher preponderance of fluoroquinolone-resistant bacteria strains, 40 percent of E. coli compared to 5 percent in the U.S.
- Tetracyclines: Used as a prophylactic and growth-promoting drug, their overuse is a grave concern in less regulated jurisdictions, with copious amounts of tetracycline residue being found in chicken meat.
Dog Bite Wound Example
One of our Brecon Buff geese was bitten on his back, causing a nasty injury with puncture wounds from the dogs teeth. In the case of dog or fox bites, there is even more risk of infection, so I decided to take him to the vet.
The treatment was straightforward but there is a risk that infection would kill the goose. The wound was cleaned up and sterilised by the vet and he was given an antibiotic injection.
I took care of the goose for the next couple of weeks at home.
Again, as I mentioned already, an open wound like this needs to heal from the inside-out. To do this, I kept the surface of the outside of the wound moist and clean by squirting saline solution over the surface of the wound twice daily using a syringe.
I administered a painkiller and antibiotics orally with a syringe to help prevent infection.

How To Stay Healthy Around Backyard Poultry
Wash your hands

- After handling food or water containers or other equipment used for poultry
- After being in areas near poultry even if you did not touch the birds
Be safe around poultry

- Dont let backyard poultry inside the house, especially in areas where food or drinks are prepared, served, or stored.
- Dont eat or drink in areas where poultry live or roam.
- Set aside a pair of shoes to wear while taking care of poultry and keep those shoes outside of the house.
- Stay outdoors when cleaning any equipment or materials used to raise or care for poultry, such as cages or food and water containers.

What Do Antibiotics Do To Chicken
Antibiotics allow chickens to be kept in crowded and immobile conditions, transforming the birds from dynamic, sociable, athletic explorers into crippled blocks of protein. The growth of antibiotic resistance in chicken farms also means that the bacteria found on store-bought chickens, like campylobacter, salmonella, or E. coli, is more likely to be antibiotic-resistant.
Bacteria do not pose a problem to ones health if the chicken is thoroughly cooked, but severe poisoning caused by undercooked chicken would become dangerously untreatable. These bacteria can be deadly, particularly to young and elderly people with vulnerable immune systems.
Although this is less of a problem in the U.K., the EU, and the U.S., elsewhere there is a chance that antibiotic residue will be consumed in the meat of the chicken. This is a huge health concern, as it means that small doses of chicken antibiotics will be constantly eaten by human consumers which can lead to an increase in antibiotic resistance among human microbes.
In one study, evaluating chicken farms in Lebanon, over three-quarters of all chicken flesh contained residues. Without strict procedures for the elimination of residues from chicken meat, this will remain yet another pressing contributor to the emergent health crisis of antibiotic resistance.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates the administration of chicken antibiotics in the U.S. The most recent significant change in their regulations was made in 2017, where the use of growth-promoting antibiotics was banned and voluntary guidance regarding the judicious administering of chicken antibiotics was implemented.
Another crucial change was the requirement of medically important antibiotics to be prescribed to animals by a vet rather than being bought over the counter. This does represent some significant progress, yet there are question marks about whether or not these measures go far enough.
The guidance regarding phasing medically important drugs out of animal feed is emphatically non-binding and voluntary. The regulations also contained exploitable loopholes, which have allowed large amounts of medically important antibiotics to remain in agricultural use. This suggests that as long as the use of chicken antibiotics and other antibiotics remains profitable in animal farming, then ways will be found to use them, even if they are attained by chicanery and lead to irresponsible outcomes.

How Does The Fda Regulate The Use Of Chicken Antibiotics
The Food and Drug Administration , a division within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, issued rules to ban the use of antibiotics for growth promotion in 2017. However, it preserved the use of antibiotics for preventive care, which is allowing the continued excessive use of the drugs. David Wallinga of the NRDC insists that the FDA is not doing enough to regulate the use of antibiotics in chickens and other farmed animals. For example, the FDA is reporting sales of antibiotics but there is no data on how the antibiotics are actually used in farms.
There is some overlap between how the USDA and the FDA regulate the U.S. food supply, the nuances of which are beyond the scope of this article. In terms of the chicken industry the USDA regulates meat, poultry, and egg products, while the FDA regulates whole eggs in the shell.

Simple Poultry First Aid
Consider having a few of the more common first aid and medical treatments for your poultry. The following are from our playbook.
For scratches, cuts, tears and fighting injuries it is hard to beat a simple cleaning of the area and regular applications of Neosporin, Triple Antibiotic or other common wound ointment. Deep wounds can be a special problem, so clean them with hydrogen peroxide and then use a good ointment. These ointments seem to promote healing from the inside out.
Respiratory ills may appear after sudden cold snaps, in very damp weather, following transport, and may even be triggered by heat stress. They can be accompanied by nasal discharge, swelling of the face and around the eyes, gaping of the mouth, and gurgling breath sounds. In treating these symptoms an inexpensive product called VetRX has done a good job for us. We open the birds beak and send a few drops down its throat, apply a coat of it around the beak and eyes, and then drizzle a few drops to form a reinforcing film atop the birds drinking water.
There should be results seen in one to three days. We also apply Vicks or Mentholatum to the birds face and around the eyes being careful not to clog the nostril openings.
Do not change rations on an ailing bird.
Thoroughly clean and disinfect the isolation pen with a strong chlorine bleach solution between uses.
Hypochlorous Acid What Is It And Why Does It Work On Chicken Sores
Hypochlorous acid is produced naturally in a mammal’s white blood cells. Its purpose is to battle viruses and bacteria that try to move in, set up a biofilm, and watch infection and inflammation grow. HOCl may penetrate the extracellular polymeric substance and kill the microorganisms living underneath, and because it’s produced in white blood cells, it complements a mammal’s matrix and DOES NO HARM! HOCl enhances the chicken’s natural ability to heal.

Macrolides are considered critical to human medicine. Doctors use macrolides to treat Campylobacter and respiratory infections like pneumonia. Macrolides such as azithromycin , are also used to treat sexually-transmitted diseases,severe gut infections, and a myriad of other infections in humans. Meanwhile, chickens, pigs, and cows are allowed to receive unregulated amounts of macrolides in the United States for disease prevention.
Treating Chickens With Pecking Sores
One of the more common causes of open sores on chickens is pecking from other chickens. Chickens do this naturally, and a few pecks at another bird are often harmless. But when a chicken becomes aggressive and pecks incessantly, causing cuts and bleeding, its important to remove the offending bird from a shared pen and to treat the chicken sores before they become infected.
A chicken that has been cut should be isolated in order to address the injury and to reduce stress on the animal. If the open sore is small and can be closed, simply clean the open sores with a wound care spray like Clireon, which is all-natural and gentle enough to use on any type of chicken cut or sore. Here are the steps to take:
- Remove any hair from the sore area. This includes feathers and other fine hairs if present.
- Apply Clireon directly onto the wound. Continue applying Clireon until clean. No rinsing is necessary.
