The Infectious Diseases Society of America has warnedgrocery-store pharmacies that free antibiotic giveaways may endanger customersand become a serious public health threat.

Grocery stores such as Giant, Publix Super Markets, Stop& Shop and Wegmans have offered free antibiotics to customers. All ofthose stores provided amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim,ciprofloxacin, penicillin, ampicillin and erythromycin. Giant and Wegmansalso offered doxycycline hyclate and Wegmans offered tetracycline.

Customers can receive up to 14 days worth ofantibiotics. In some cases, there are no limits to the number of prescriptionsthat can be filled.

Executives from Giant said the program will breedgoodwill among its shoppers, and described the offer as good citizenship.

Officials at the IDSA said these programs may havelong-term detrimental effects on public health. While it may make goodmarketing sense, promoting antibiotics at a time when we are facing a crisis ofantibiotic resistance does not make good public health sense, AnneGershon, MD, IDSA president, said in a press release. On the otherhand, grocery stores would be doing a tremendous service if they help morepeople get their influenza shots.

Sadly, as we are just now learning from the Peanut Corporation ofAmerica management, public health issues do not drive decision-making. Greedrules.

Publix To Offer 7 Most Popular Antibiotics For Free

Why Wont The Pharmacy Fill My New PH Medications?

CAPE CORAL – Publix supermarket chain is going further than most retailers trying to lure shoppers into their stores with low-cost prescription drugs, announcing Monday it will offer seven antibiotics for free.

“It can’t be any more affordable than free,” said Gov. Charlie Crist, who went to a suburban Fort Myers Publix store to help the company announce the initiative and laud it for a “great corporate ethic.”

The seven oral antibiotics, representing the most commonly filled at the chain’s pharmacies, will be available at no cost to anyone with a prescription as often as they need them, Publix CEO Charlie Jenkins Jr. said. Fourteen-day supplies of the seven drugs will be available at all 684 of the chain’s pharmacies in five Southern states.

The prescription antibiotics available under the program are amoxicillin, cephalexin, penicillin VK, erythromycin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and ciprofloxacin.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kmart and other retailers already offer discounted drug programs. But Publix Super Markets Inc. officials say the company is the first large regional chain to offer certain drugs at no cost. In addition to Florida, the company operates stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

With health care costs one of the biggest challenges facing many Americans, Crist said that the private sector’s involvement in the solution was “a great trend.”

“So I hope are ready,” Agwunobi said, predicting a heavy response.

Getting A Prescription To The Pharmacy

Ogilvie said for patients given a physical prescription, many pharmacies have an app, online or telephone service that allows you to send it to the pharmacy without going to the store.

“You still do need to have the original prescription brought in to the pharmacy when you go to pick it up, but it saves you having to make multiple trips and unnecessary exposures,” he said.

He said the best case scenario is for the physician to fax the prescription directly to the pharmacy.

Draper said for those using the Shoppers Drug Mart virtual-care system, the doctor will directly fax the prescription to the pharmacy of your choice, adding that it does not have to be a Shoppers Drug Mart.
