There are a lot of options for treating the symptoms of an infection, such as pain, swelling, or fever. Americans Take Fish Antibiotics Because It’s Cheaper Than A Visit To The Doctor

Thomas Labs Fish Flox Forte (Ciprofloxacin) Antibacterial ...

A study of antibiotics marketed for fish online found user comments about human use garner nine times as much attention

New research has found that some Americans are probably taking fish antibiotics as a substitute for going to the doctor, which can be prohibitively expensive for many in the US.

Unlike other antibiotics, fish antibiotics are readily available without a prescription online and are relatively inexpensive as anti-bacterial drugs for pet fish.

Researchers analyzed reviews for fish antibiotics available online, and found a small but significant percentage of consumers reviewed the antibiotics for human use.

In addition, at least five of the antibiotics marketed for fish that researchers looked at had the exact imprints, colors and shapes of antibiotics for humans, which could encourage people to use them.

While human consumption of fish antibiotics is likely low, any consumption by humans of antibiotics intended for animals is alarming, said Brandon Bookstaver, a pharmacist and director of residency and training at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.

Bookstaver co-authored the research, which was presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists semi-annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, in December.

Additionally, at least one online seller responded to an online question, saying fish antibiotics were suitable for human use.

  • Human Consumption Of Fish Antibiotics Investigated In New Study

Consumers seeking cheaper, faster access to antibiotics are apparently consuming antibiotics intended for treating fish rather than humans, according to research presented at the ASHP 54th Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition. This consumption may lead to dangerous unintended consequences such as adverse side-effects, treatment failures, and antibiotic drug resistance, said co-author Brandon Bookstaver, Pharm.D., director of residency and fellowship training at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.

The new research investigated the broad range of this potential misuse by conducting a comprehensive review of the online fish antibiotic market, along with all customer reviews and comments available on websites that sell fish antibiotics in the United States.

“While human consumption of fish antibiotics is likely low, any consumption by humans of antibiotics intended for animals is alarming,” Bookstaver said. “Self-medication and the availability of antibiotics without healthcare oversight might contribute to increasing antimicrobial resistance and delayed appropriate treatment. We were particularly concerned that the high volume of positive feedback on the comments about human use might encourage others to attempt to use these drugs.”

Are Fish Antibiotics The Same As Human Antibiotics

When you start shopping for fish antibiotics, youll be surprised to see that most dont come in powder or pellet form. Rather, they are pills or tablets.

How the hell is a fish supposed to take a pill???

Obviously, these fish antibiotics arent actually meant for fish.

The sellers know that people like preppers want to get antibiotics without a prescription. Hence, they exploit a loophole in the law that allows them to market antibiotics for fish even though they are the same pills for humans.

Right now, the FDA does not require a prescription for fish antibiotics.

    What Does Usp Standard Mean

Fish Mox Amoxicillin Compared to a Doctor Prescribed Amoxicillin. Are they different? Any Surprises?

As I said above, animal medications arent held to the same standards as human meds, so you are taking a risk by taking fish antibiotics.

Some sellers try to install confidence in the buyers by slapping labels on their products. One of the most common is Made According to USP Standards.

The United States Pharmacopeial Convention is a nonprofit organization that sets the standards for medications. These standards are used in over 140 countries. Any human drug sold in the United States must meet USP standards.

Heres the thing: Not a single fish antibiotic has been verified by the USP!

Again, I emphasize that the pill ingredients might be the same as those sold for humans, but it doesnt mean it is the same quality.

For example, the fish antibiotics could have been stored in a way that allowed mold to grow on them. Or maybe moisture levels were too high and destroyed the pills.

You might also see labels like Pharmaceutical Grade on fish antibiotics. However, like with the USP label, this doesnt mean anything.

Why I Added Fish Antibiotics To My Stockpile

I have young daughters still at home, one of whom is prone to respiratory infections and being able to treat her if she gets sick in a SHTF situation is one of my main concerns. So, although Ive also research natural treatments, I did some research and ordered a bottle of fish antibiotics, cephalexin . I had planned to order several other kinds later on, but I started with cephalexin. It arrived, and I added it to my SHTF stockpile of supplies and didnt think much more about it.

But just a few days later, I had the opportunity to test it out those fish antibiotics on a tooth infection. Im going to share that experience with you along with some other good information to know about fish antibiotics for survival.

My tooth had been aching something fierce for about three days or more and like the big baby I am when it comes to dentistry, I was putting off getting it taken care of even though I KNOW that it can lead to more problems if I put it off. We dont always do what we should, do we?

Well, the entire left side of my nose and cheek swelled up virtually overnight from this toothache. Funny thing was, with the swelling there, the pain of the toothache was gone. But my children were freaked out because I looked really horrible with half my face swollen. A relief and not a relief at the same time. Since my fish antibiotics had arrived by chance just a few days prior to that, I looked up recommended dosages for severe infection and started taking them.

Are Fish Antibiotics For Humans Safe

First off, if you are considering this or any other medical related option, you should perform whatever research you deem necessary AND talk to a doctor. Dont just take this article as you main resource, the author is not a doctor and does not dispense medical advice.

To answer the question of the safety of fish antibiotics for humans, we must first consider the following factors:

  • What are the ingredients of Fish Antibiotics vs Human Antibiotics?
  • What are the dosages offered?
  • I have researched some common brands of fish antibiotics and created this table to help share the information:

    Fish Antibiotic Name
    Penicillin500mg

So, if someone was interested in acquiring some fish antibiotics for humans, they can see that these readily available medicines appear to be both the same ingredient and in many cases the same dosage as those offered to humans from pharmacies.

Other Factors To Consider When Researching Fish Antibiotics For Humans

    1. Does the fish antibiotic have only 1 ingredient The last thing anyone wants is to buy and take one of these products that also includes a fish health supplement in it that has not been used by humans. Make sure before you buy that the only ingredient in the capsules is the antibiotic that you want such as:

    • Amoxicillin
    • Penicillin
    • Ampicillin

    2. Make sure that the dosages are appropriate to what is recommended by a doctor or a well respected resource such as Drugs.com.

    3. Store antibiotics properly These medications should be kept in a cool, dark place with the original seal intact until needed. It is also essential to monitor the expiration date if each bottle and discard and replace any that are out of date.

    4. Be aware of allergies A small segment of the population is allergic to Penicillin and its derivative medicines. Be aware of all medical allergies for anyone you are making a Bug Out Plan for.

    5. The rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria in modern society is a major threat to modern medicine. The frequent use of antibiotics in both humans and animals has accelerated this trend. Best practice is to use these drugs only when necessary.

Are Fish Antibiotics Safe For Humans

Thomas Labs Fish Mox Forte (Amoxicillin) Antibacterial ...

As most of us already know, healthcare in the United States is really costly. Sick people and preppers alike have been known to stock up on fish antibiotics because they are a fraction of the cost that they would spend on getting a conventional prescription.

Its important to remember that if you have a Penicillin allergy, you should not take Fish Penicillin, Mox, or Fish Ampicillin. Cephalexin is in a different drug family than Penicillin, but is quoted as having a 10% cross-reactivity rate with Penicillin.

Why I Decided To Try Fish Antibiotics

I figured the only way to know if fish antibiotics would really work in a survival situation, would be to try them now. And Id rather experiment now then wait until SHTF to find out fish antibiotics dont work. Plus, waiting till SHTF to try them meant taking the additional risk that one of us could have an allergic reaction to the fish antibiotics without professional doctors available to help.

Since Im a single mom, I cannot afford to check out during a SHTF event because of an allergic reaction and I certainly dont want to inadvertently kill one of my children while trying to heal them of an infection. I told my family what I was doing before I started taking them, just in case something quirky went wrong and I needed professional medical attention.

The first day, my face continued to swell, and I was a bit nervous to go to bed thinking that my eye would be swollen shut when I woke. As expected, when I woke the next morning, my face and my eye were really swollen from the infection, but I could still see. Still no pain. I continued the antibiotics and I started drinking a lot of water.

It was a Saturday morning. I decided if the swelling didnt start going down by the next morning, I was heading for the urgent care. Trust me, I wasnt looking forward to having to tell the doctors that I had taken fish antibiotics. I could anticipate the looks between staff as if deciding whether I was crazy and should be committed somewhere.

    What Is Fish Mox

Fish mox is one of the many fish antibiotics that are used to treat bacterial infections in ornamental and pet fish. The antibiotics that are used to treat them are the same or similar to the antibiotics that are provided for human use, as well. Fish antibiotics currently on the market dont require a prescription and mainly come in lots of approximately 30-100. Labs make several forms of them, including capsules, tablets, single- use powder packets and pure bulk powder jars.

Now it may be a little reckless to rely on fish antibiotics when civilization is our safety net. Still, in the absence of such amenities, youll want to be thinking ahead to provide enough antibiotics to protect your family or group in a collapse situation.

Many survivalists often stockpile these fish meds in anticipation of emergencies where they might not have access to prescription antibiotics. This type of creative thinking can help you get much-needed medicine, thereby increasing your odds of long-term survival and putting you exactly where you want to be once disaster strikes.

This Is Why Taking Fish Medicine Is Truly A Bad Idea

Those who misuse aquatic antibiotics are playing a dangerous game with their health, doctors and veterinarians say

Earlier this month, a from author Rachel Sharp alerted the Internet to a disturbing trend: Some people were resorting to taking fish antibiotics to cure their ailments. Yes, fish antibiotics. Sharps Tweet, which quickly went viral, included a screenshot of several thinly veiled Amazon reviews left by humans who were clearly using the aquatic pet medicine Moxifish on themselves.

Naturally, the Internet was appalled. But few stopped to ask: whats actually so wrong with taking fish antibiotics?

How bad is American healthcare?Read the reviews for aquarium antibiotics and decide for yourself.

    Rachel Sharp

Its not quite as crazy as it sounds. Fish are given many of the same antibiotics as humansamoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, penicillin and moresometimes even in the same doses. These pills, which are intended to be dissolved in fish tanks and be absorbed through fishes’ skin, can also look extremely similar to the human versions. And while a trip to the doctor can rack up hundreds of dollars for someone who doesn’t have insurance, a bottle of 30 500mg capsules of Moxifish costs just $29.95 from the supplier, Fishceuticals.

But there are a few key reasons why taking your fishs drugs is a very bad, no good idea. Lets start at the top.

But even if fish meds were labeled as human-grade medicines, using them to self-medicate would still be a bad idea.
