Program Heralded As Benefit To Uninsured

OCALA – Several popular antibiotics are now available free of charge at your local Publix pharmacy, as long as you have a doctor’s prescription for them.

Publix Super Markets rolled out the free prescription drug program on Monday in nearly 700 of its 900 stores, including the ones in Marion County.

“I think it’s pretty cool,” said Megan Brew of Ocala, a Publix shopper who hadn’t heard about the new program. “I shop here so much that it makes it easier to get my medications here than go to another pharmacy,” she said Monday afternoon.

While most other shoppers liked the idea, some said they prefer to stick to their old pharmacy, while others were used to mail-in prescriptions.

But the program could be most beneficial to those who don’t have health insurance or have a hard time affording their medications.

“We feel that our customers sometimes have to balance buying groceries and buying ,” said Dwaine Stevens, spokesman for Publix. “So we created this free antibiotic program, especially for people who are underinsured and uninsured.”

Carol Jubelirer, executive community health nursing director at Marion County Health Department, couldn’t agree more.

“I think it’s a great idea. It’s a great opportunity for people who need antibiotics and can’t afford them any other way,” she said.

The prescription antibiotics include amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, penicillin VK, ampicillin and, erythromycin.
