Ceftazidime injection is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

Glycopeptide class antibiotics are generally composed of peptide enzymes that inhibit synthesis of microbe cell walls. Due to a high level of toxicity, use is restricted to critically ill patients. Vancomycin is a common intravenous glycopeptide antibiotic that is often used to treat a serious intestinal infection called Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. This gram-positive intestinal infection usually requires vancomycin to be administered slowly over a daily period of one to two hours. Dosage will largely depend on the patient’s condition, weight and kidney function.

Upper respiratory tract infections account for millions of visits to family physicians each year in the United States. Although warranted in some cases, antibiotics are greatly overused. This article outlines the guidelines and indications for appropriate antibiotic use for common upper respiratory infections. Early antibiotic treatment may be indicated in patients with acute otitis media, group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis, epiglottitis, or bronchitis caused by pertussis. The pleura is the membrane between the lung and the chest wall. A doctor may hear crackles when listening to your chest with a stethoscope.

Guidelines For Administering Through A Picc Line
- Wash your hands. Use warm water and soap to scrub for 1 minute. Wash between fingers and rinse thoroughly.
- Dry your hands. Use a fresh paper towel and use it to turn off the water so that you do not touch a dirty surface after washing. Set the paper towel aside, and throw it away after the IV care is done.
- Put gloves on.Always wear medical gloves when touching and administering IV antibiotics. Be sure to keep gloves clean at all times and discard after use.
- Prep injection site. Wipe down all IV antibiotics injection sites with alcohol prep before injection. Wipe the PICC line opening with alcohol before attaching it to the IV.
- Hang the IV bag. The drip chamber should be at least 18 inches above your head.
- Make sure everything is clean and sterile. Always clean the catheter port with an alcohol wipe before use. Flush the catheter with saline or heparin as directed by your medical team.
- Attach IV and begin. Attach the IV tubing to your catheter and secure it with tape. Start the medication as directed by your doctor.

Cephalosporins are grouped together based on the type of bacteria that theyre most effective against. These groups are referred to as generations. There are five generations of cephalosporins.

Antibiotics prescribed for children with pneumonia include the following:
- Infants, preschoolers, and school-aged children with suspected bacterial pneumonia may be treated with amoxicillin.
- Children with suspected atypical pneumonia can be treated with macrolides.
- Children allergic to penicillin will be treated with other antibiotics as needed for the specific pathogen.
- Hospitalized, immunized children can be treated with ampicillin or penicillin G.
- Hospitalized children and infants who are not fully vaccinated may be treated with a cephalosporin.
- Hospitalized children with suspected M. pneumoniae or C. pneumoniae infection may be treated with combination therapy of a macrolide and a beta-lactam antibiotic .
- Hospitalized children with suspected S. aureus infections might be treated with a combination of Vancocin or clindamycin and a beta-lactam.

Bone And Joint Infections
The Oral versus Intravenous Antibiotics for Bone and Joint Infection trial was conducted at multiple centres across the UK. It compared early switching from intravenous to oral therapy to continuing intravenous antibiotics for at least six weeks. It included all adults with suspected bone and joint infections, irrespective of surgical intervention or antibiotic choice, who were planned to receive at least six weeks of antibiotic therapy. Comparing the outcomes at one year suggested that appropriately selected oral therapy is non-inferior to intravenous therapy. However, there are several important caveats:
the trial was not powered to evaluate the outcome between different types of infection
Gram-negative infections were under-represented
most patients had surgical management of the infection
rifampicin was used as a treatment option in approximately one-third of the cohort
the clinicians managing the patients were specialist-led teams.
Although the events were not necessarily related to the antibiotics, one in four patients experienced a serious adverse event. This shows that ongoing monitoring is still required even with an oral antibiotic regimen., Further studies are required to look more closely at the different types of infection and the varying antibiotic regimens. Ideally these trials should be performed in the Australian healthcare system.
