In the United States, antibiotics are not available over-the-counter. A doctors prescription is required initially.

Antibiotics are powerful treatments that influence your bodys entire internal environment, so theyre usually administered as needed by a doctor or other medical professional following a consultation to guarantee both safety and efficacy.

As a result, it is best to talk with your doctor before purchasing antibiotics. Antibiotics will be most effective for you in this situation since they will be tailored particularly to your needs rather than being purchased at random based on what appears in your web search results.

to the editor: This article provided an excellent overview of the diagnosis and treatment of strep throat. The author indicates that amoxicillin is equally effective and more palatable than using penicillin. I was taught to avoid using ampicillin or amoxicillin to treat strep throat because acute mononucleosis may be the problem, and that it presents much like a strep throat in the acute phase. When patients with mono are given ampicillin or amoxicillin, a generalized red rash often appears. Is this classic advice taught to me in the 1970s out of date?

JOSEPH E. SCHERGER, MD, MPH

E-mail:

The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines suggest that amoxicillin is equally effective and more palatable than penicillin for treating streptococcal pharyngitis. For children who have acute GABHS pharyngitis, amoxicillin may be a good alternative for those unlikely to comply with penicillin use because of taste, or whose parents prefer to avoid an antibiotic injection. Penicillin and amoxicillin are inexpensive and generic, and GABHS isolates have not developed resistance to these drugs.

I Have A Cold Why Can’t I Get An Antibiotic

Many infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria.

  • The common cold, the flu, COVID, sinusitis, and even most sore throats are viral in nature, and antibiotics simply do not work to kill viruses.
  • Most viral illnesses do not need special medication and are âself-limitingâ, meaning your own immune system can fight off the illness, especially if you are vaccinated.

Improper use of antibiotics to treat viral infections is leading to an epidemic of antibiotic resistance.

Today, doctors are very careful not to prescribe antibiotics when they are not needed. Not only will this worsen antibiotic resistance, it will also put you at risk for unnecessary side effects and drug costs. There is no reason to demand an antibiotic when you simply don’t need it.
