The Dangers Of Mixing Drugs

Drugs are incredible, and they help us fight off infections that would give us a lot of trouble in a different scenario. Sometimes, we inadvertently create drug interactions in our bodies, and these interactions could lead to kidney failure, internal bleeding, or kidney failure.

Drug interactions occur in the body when a drug and another substance make contact in the body and cause different effects that each would have independently. Fruits, food, illegal substances, and legal drugs can all bring about drug interactions.

These typically fall into two groups the first is when two drugs effects affect one another directly. In other situations, one drug affects how your body works with the other drug, how the body absorbs, metabolizes, and transports it.

For instance, blood thinner or anticoagulants and aspirin have the same effect on the body, but they work differently, and their effects could be dangerous if you use them together.

They both prevent blood clots, anticoagulants prevent the production of clotting elements that bind clots, and aspirin prevents blood cells from forming into clumps that cause clots. These outcomes are safe and suitable for your body individually.

Taken together, these two can prevent blood clotting to a life-threatening extent, possibly causing internal bleeding.

Some drugs elicit the opposite response, and you might think they cancel each other out, but this isnt the case.

Even after you’ve started a course of antibiotics, you still might want to ease some lingering pain or discomfort. But with all the possible side effects and drug interactions, it’s hard to know which kind of pain reliever to take. Is it safe to reach for a bottle of ibuprofen, or should you just tough it out?

Always check with your doctor before you combine any medications with antibiotics, but for the most part, it shouldn’t be a problem to take ibuprofen. Most major classes of antibiotics macrolides, penicillins, cephalosporins, nitrofurans, sulfonamides and tetracyclines don’t show any major reactions with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , the drug family that ibuprofen belongs to.

Of course, there is one major exception to the rule: fluoroquinolones, which are the major exception to many antibiotic rules. Fluoroquinolones are extremely powerful drugs, and with this power comes some pretty severe side effects. In 2008, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a boxed warning for all fluoroquinolones because of their risk of causing tendon damage and rupture. The FDA took action again in 2013, releasing a boxed warning about the danger of peripheral neuropathy while taking fluoroquinolones. Peripheral neuropathy happens when there’s damage to the nerves that run between the spinal cord and brain, causing numbness, tingling, pain, and possibly long-term disability in the arms and legs.

Foods To Eat While Taking Antibiotics

Posted on by Burt’sMedicine

Antibiotics are a common way to fight infections, but many dont realize there are certain foods to eat while taking antibiotics.

Antibiotic therapy is the first line of treatment for the majority of bacterial infections. Unfortunately, these drugs arent without side effects.

Rarely, they can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms like

  • Abdominal pain

Although these side effects are usually mild, transient, and harmless, they can become severe and signal the need for a change in medication.

Sometimes, patients find they can control these side effects, or even eliminate them completely, with just a few basic diet changes.

In other cases, its the food causing the problem and removing it from their diet is enough.

In this post, well tell you about six of the best foods to eat while taking antibiotics and the four you should always avoid, too.

Mixing any combination of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs can be unpredictable and dangerous. Most fatal overdoses involve the use of more than one type of drug .

Poly-drug use is dangerous because different drugs act on our bodies in different ways. The harmful effects are magnified by using more than one drug type.

What is ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is one of a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs . Itâs widely used for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.

Itâs available over the counter as tablets or capsules in doses of 200â400 mg and can be taken up to three times a day after food. Some tablets are designed to release the drug slowly over a period of time, and some people find these helpful for night-time pain relief.

Higher doses of ibuprofen are available on prescription and can be used if you have rheumatoid arthritis or another type of inflammatory arthritis.

Ibuprofen is also available in lipid-based soft capsules. These can be bought from pharmacies and are as effective as prescribed ibuprofen in relieving flaring joint pain.

If ibuprofen doesnât give enough relief from pain, or if you need pain relief over a long period of time, then you should speak to your doctor, who may be able to prescribe a stronger type of NSAID or a combination of drugs that will be more effective.

Safety Of Paracetamol/ibuprofen Combinations

Taking NSAIDs Safely

Short-term studies of paracetamol/ibuprofen combinations in acute pain have not identified specific safety concerns other than those already known to be associated with the individual active ingredients.8,11,12,16

However, one study of 13 weeks found use of combined paracetamol/ibuprofen may increase the risk of bleeding over and above that associated with the individual drugs, suggesting caution should apply to long-term use.9

A retrospective cohort study that analysed the health insurance records of more than 640,000 patients aged 65 years and older found the combination of an NSAID and paracetamol to be associated with increased risk of hospitalisation for gastrointestinal events, compared with either drug alone.b,17

While co-administration with a proton pump inhibitor appeared to mitigate this risk, the combination was still associated with double the risk of hospitalisations compared with paracetamol alone.17

b Hazard ratio for combination: 2.55 compared with paracetamol alone 3 g/day, and 1.63 compared with NSAID alone.

Why Would There Be Concern About Taking Ibuprofen For Covid

The product insert for ibuprofen already states that there is the potential for the drug to mask the symptoms of infections in general which may mean that people are only diagnosed in more severe stages.

NSAIDs have occasionally been associated with acute kidney injury, and the risk of this is increased in people who are prone to dehydration, such as older and critically ill patients.

There is a hypothetical risk that NSAIDs might also affect the way SARS-CoV-2 binds to human cells, as research in animals has shown that NSAIDs such as ibuprofen increase levels of a protein called ACE2 on the surface of cells, the same protein that SARS-CoV-2 binds to.

These concerns apply to all NSAIDs, not only ibuprofen, such as naproxen and diclofenac.

When heartburn or acid indigestion strikes, you need something that settles your stomach ASAP. Its no fun to walk around feeling like you have your own personal fire-breathing dragon raging in your esophagus, and its even less fun to battle the burn while trying to work, exercise, drive through rush hour traffic, or sleep.

If youre prone to bouts of GI distress, its smart to have a reliable over-the-counter antacid on hand that can provide quick relief. Why? Because these medications can decrease the amount of stomach acid you produce, says University of Missouri Health Care gastroenterologist Yezaz Ghouri, MD.

The stomach normally produces hydrochloric acid to help digest food and kill bacteria or other organisms that may have been ingested along with the food, Dr. Ghouri explains. When there is an overproduction of the acid, it can lead to stomach discomfort.

What Foods To Not Eat While Taking Antibiotics

There are some foods you should avoid while on antibiotics, either because they interfere with absorption or because the combination can make you feel sick.

In most cases, these foods simply interact poorly and make the antibiotics less effective.

Foods to avoid include:

  • Grapefruit You should avoid both the fruit and the juice of this sour citrus product. It contains compounds that can keep the body from properly absorbing your antibiotics as well as other medications, too!
  • Excess Calcium Some studies show that excess calcium interferes with absorption. For best results, stick to fermented dairy products until you are finished with your antibiotics.
  • Alcohol Mixing alcohol and antibiotics can lead to a host of unpleasant side effects. The most common of these are
  • Increased nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Heart rate issues. You should avoid alcohol throughout the duration of treatment and for 48 to 72 hours after treatment ends.
  • Sugars and Yeast For some patients antibiotic usage may lead to candida infections. Avoid foods high in sugar and yeast to avoid feeding the candida organism. This is especially important if you find you nearly always end up with a yeast infection after a course of antibiotics.
