  • Study reveals how effective immune cells are at controlling Staphylococcus aureus â bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections in humans
  • Research paves the way for the development of new treatments to help the immune system kill bacteria without antibiotics
  • New insight into the immune systemâs response to infection is vital as antibiotics become less effective

A new understanding of immune cells could help scientists support our own immune system to fight infection without the need for antibiotics.

Scientists from the University of Sheffield examined how immune cells â called neutrophils â respond to bacteria, and the many different strategies they use to kill microbes which can cause harmful infections.

The study, published in the journal Autophagy, revealed how effective neutrophils were at controlling Staphylococcus aureus â bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections in humans.

Dr Simon Johnston, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sheffieldâs Florey Institute and Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease, said: âA major problem in some Staphylococcal aureus infections is that they can be resistant to antibiotics. This means treating these infections might be very difficult or impossible.

âWe know that some immune cells can detect when bacteria escape these phagosomes. One way is using autophagy, a process that evolved to recycle old or broken parts of cells.â

Complications Of Strep Throat

Strep throat typically responds well to treatment with antibiotics. Pain and other symptoms often ease up quickly, within about 24 hours. While its possible that your body can fight off the strep throat infection in about a week, its also possible that the infection can spread, and this is potentially dangerous. You can also develop serious inflammatory reactions.

When a strep throat infection spreads, it may affect your:

Inflammatory illnesses can be an even bigger problem. Untreated strep throat could lead to:

  • Rheumatic fever, which can affect your heart, nervous system, and joints
  • An inflammatory joint condition called poststreptococcal reactive arthritis
  • Inflamed kidneys

So, without treatment, strep throat has the potential to be quite serious. Considering the ease of treatment, theres no reason why any case of strep throat needs to advance to these more serious stages.

You can cope with the pain and fever of strep throat in its early stages by using over-the-counter pain relievers including acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Dont use aspirin with children between the ages of 3 and 18, due to a potential link with a rare condition.

Then contact Alpha Internal Medicine by phone or online to book an exam to diagnose and treat strep throat. The sooner youre treated, the sooner your throat returns to normal. Make an appointment as soon as possible.

Is Strep Throat Overmedicated

Mmmm.

Sounds like the idea of not administering antibiotics for strep throat may not be as crazy as it first sounds. Are doctors overmedicating strep throat just like they overmedicate ear infections, colds and sinus/respiratory infections?

A round of antibiotics has the potential to cause permanent damage to the gut flora. This, in turn, has a lifelong impact on overall immunity to both chronic and acute illness. Skipping those antibiotic pills altogether may prove in the long run to be the smartest approach of all.

How Does Strep Throat Spread

Health and Harmony with Anne Dwyer

Highly contagious, strep throat is spread through airborne droplets . Children can also get infected by touching surfaces that carry the bacteria and then touching their nose, mouth or eyes.

I often tell parents not to share anything in the house that goes in the mouth, says Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt, who is medical director of Yale New Haven Hospitals Pediatric Primary Care Center. Once they have been on antibiotics for 24 to 48 hours, they shouldnt be contagious. We also advise throwing out their toothbrush and washing their pillowcases or other such items after they have been on the antibiotics 24 to 48 hours.

As for prevention, practicing proper hand hygiene is key. Wash your hands and cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze, Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt advises.

Got a sore throat? The doctor may write a quick prescription for penicillin or amoxicillin, and with the stroke of a pen, help diminish public health and your own future health by encouraging bacteria to evolve resistance to antibiotics.

It has been widely reported that bacteria will evolve to render antibiotics mostly ineffective against them by mid-century, and current strategies to make up for the projected shortfalls havent worked.

One possible problem is that drug development strategies have focused on replacing antibiotics in extreme infections, such as sepsis, where every minute without an effective drug increases the risk of death.

But the evolutionary process that brings forth antibiotic resistance doesnt happen nearly as often in those big infections as it does in the multitude of small ones like sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and bladder infections, the Georgia Tech researchers said.

It might make more sense to give antibiotics less often and preserve their effectiveness for when theyre really needed. And develop alternate treatments for the small infections, Brown said.

Duplicitous antibiotics

The evolution of antibiotic resistance can be downright two-faced.

Furious infections have ensued, essentially invulnerable to antibiotics, followed by sepsis and death.

Personal Stories About Taking Antibiotics For Sore Throat

These stories are based on information gathered from health professionals and consumers. They may be helpful as you make important health decisions.

I was sick a lot as a kid, and I was always taking medicine. Maybe it helped at the time. But in the past few years, when I’ve gotten a bad sore throat or sinus infection, antibiotics haven’t worked. I’ve had to try two or three different ones each time. That gets expensive. The next time I get a sore throat, I’m going to try just staying home, resting, and taking care of myself instead of taking antibiotics.

Jesse, 34

My 8-year-old daughter got strep throat last month. I thought it was just a cold, and I kept her home from school for a few days. But she wasn’t getting better and she felt so miserable. I was also worried about ear infections. She gets a lot of those too. The doctor did a strep test and suggested she take antibiotics. Amy started feeling better a few days later. I think antibiotics were the right way to go this time.

My insurance doesn’t pay for all of my medicines, so I try to make sure I really need the ones I do take. The last time I had a bad cold, my throat got really sore. The pain made it hard for me to swallow. I called my doctor’s office and the nurse said I could come in if I felt I needed a prescription. I thought I’d wait and see instead. I took ibuprofen and drank a lot of tea and honey, and in a few days I felt better. I’m glad I didn’t spend the money on a doctor visit and medicine.
