Are Antibiotics Necessary For Strep Throat
If your sore throat is from strep throat, taking antibiotics can help because this is a bacterial infection. However, you dont always have to take antibiotics for strep throat. Doctors say antibiotics should be reserved for a severe sore throat caused by bacteria.
The reason is that exposure to too many antibiotics can lead to something called antibiotic resistance. This refers to a situation where bacteria and other microorganisms develop the ability to defeat the antibiotics that were developed to kill them. These germs are called superbugs and they cannot be killed by commonly available drugs.
Strep Throat Common Symptoms
The most common symptoms of strep throat are:
- Severe sore throat
- Fever: Many cases of strep throat involve a fever of at least 101ºF.
- Pain when swallowing: Some people describe the throat and swallowing pain of strep throat as being similar to trying to swallow a brick. It isnt easily resolved by drinking cold or warm beverages.
- Petechiae: Tiny red spots may appear on the palate or back of the throat.
- Swollen tonsils: Along with swelling, the tonsils may appear red or have white patches or pus visible on them.
- Swollen lymph nodes: It is common to have tender, swollen lymph nodes on the sides of your neck or under your jaw.
- No cough: It is uncommon to have a cough or runny nose when you have strep pharyngitis.

Personal Stories About Taking Antibiotics For Sore Throat
These stories are based on information gathered from health professionals and consumers. They may be helpful as you make important health decisions.
I was sick a lot as a kid, and I was always taking medicine. Maybe it helped at the time. But in the past few years, when Iâve gotten a bad sore throat or sinus infection, antibiotics havenât worked. Iâve had to try two or three different ones each time. That gets expensive. The next time I get a sore throat, Iâm going to try just staying home, resting, and taking care of myself instead of taking antibiotics.
My 8-year-old daughter got strep throat last month. I thought it was just a cold, and I kept her home from school for a few days. But she wasnât getting better and she felt so miserable. I was also worried about ear infections. She gets a lot of those too. The doctor did a strep test and suggested she take antibiotics. Amy started feeling better a few days later. I think antibiotics were the right way to go this time.
Key Points To Remember
- People often think antibiotics will cure their sore throat. But most sore throats are caused by a virus, such as a cold. Antibiotics won’t work for sore throats caused by a virus.
- Most of the time, sore throats go away on their own. It may take a few days or up to a week, depending on the cause.
- To relieve the pain from a sore throat, you can take over-the-counter medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or you can try lozenges or nasal sprays. Drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest.
- Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to shorten the time you are able to spread strep throatwhich is caused by bacteriato others. Antibiotics will help prevent a serious but rare problem called rheumatic fever.
- Taking antibiotics too often or when you don’t need them can be harmful and costly. And the medicine may not work the next time you take it when you really do need it. This is called antibiotic resistance.

Effective Strep Throat Home Remedies
- Use a mortar & pestle to mash up 3 cloves of fresh garlic . If the raw garlic is too hot for you or youre concerned about the odor potential, use homemade pickled garlic instead. Do not use commercial pickled garlic as it has no therapeutic value.
- Mix in half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper .
- Mix in raw honey to taste which has healing properties of its own.
Martin also gargled with raw apple cider vinegar diluted with some water 3x per day . Although Martin didnt use it, adding small cups of bone broth to the regimen would have helped speed healing as well.
Note that some people like to gargle with colloidal silver, which also works well. However, note that this remedy will kill the good bacteria in your throat area as well as the bad, potentially contributing to more problems down the road from unbalanced mouth, throat, and sinuses flora.
Below is Martins daily journal logging his progress to a cure.
How Do People Get Strep Throat
The bacteria that cause strep throat tend to hang out in the nose and throat. So normal activities like sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can easily spread an infection from one person to another.
Kids with untreated strep throat are more likely to spread the infection when their symptoms are most severe, but can still infect others for up to 3 weeks.
That’s why it’s so important to teach kids the importance of hand washing. Good hygiene can lessen their chances of getting contagious diseases like strep throat.

10/7 Monday early afternoon visit to doctor for regular checkup and asking about an unrelated pulled muscle. He checked my throat and said nothing. It didnt matter if he had, I would have just went through the motions of accepting an antibiotic prescription, but not taking it I had already made up my mind to do something different.
10/7 Monday afternoon found information on The Healthy Home Economist about beating strep with no meds. Followed up with a phone call to David Aaron Katz. Became convinced that I will muscle through it with home remedies. As per Davids suggestion, I started by sucking/chewing on cloves of garlic 5 of them before the day was out!
10/7 Monday evening attempted to sing. Did not go well, highs were very strained.
10/8 Tuesday morning throat uncomfortableness, but quick mirror check didnt seem to reveal anything overly red. Driving son to school is when I looked in rear view mirror and noticed two white spots. Strep confirmed.
10/8 Tuesday later morning started a cycle of garlic chewing with a mixture of raw honey & cayenne pepper every half hour . First two administers I experienced upset stomach, but became very tired and slept most afternoon.

Signs You May Benefit From Seeing A Therapist
Its important to seek support for what matters most: your emotional well-being. Too often, we have a poor understanding of how to practice self-care, or we avoid it all together. And while self-care is something a mental health professional is likely to recommend to you, most agree that getting professional help from a licensed therapist should be a priority.

Colloidal Silver Use In Conjunction With Antibiotics
Research shows that low doses of silver can massively boost the effect of antibiotics on bacteria, making them up to 1,000 times more sensitive to the drugs. They found not only did silver boost the ability of a broad range of commonly used antibiotics so as to stop mice dying of otherwise lethal infections, but it made at least one resistant bacterium succumb to antibiotics again.
The team also found that silver helps deal with two kinds of infections that usually require repeat trips to the clinic for antibiotic treatment. One being caused by biofilms.
Help a girl out get her some silver!
Many antibiotics are thought to kill their targets by producing reactive oxygen compounds, and Collins and his team showed that when boosted with a small amount of silver these drugs can kill between 10 and 1,000 times as many bacteria .
Colloidal silver attacks bacterial cells in two main ways: it makes the cell membrane more permeable, and it interferes with the cells metabolism, leading to the overproduction of reactive, and often toxic, oxygen compounds. Thus, even if not treating with antibiotics, silver will still work in helping to eliminate the strep bacteria.

Free Weekly Newsletter + Report On Secrets Of Strong Immunity
Conventional doctors today do a great job of scaring people out of their minds about the possibility of rheumatic fever/heart damage from allowing the body to deal with a strep throat infection unmedicated. However, the truth is, the risk of complications from strep throat is very small for healthy people who have no issues with their immune system. Even WebMD used to state that strep throat will go away on its own with or without treatment in 3-7 days.
Ive written before about the one and only case of strep throat I ever had. It occurred when I was 15 and I am ever so grateful my MD father loved me enough to let me fight through it and win without antibiotics. The result? Ive never ever gotten strep throat again despite repeated exposures. One exposure was in very close quarters a college roommate had strep throat and I still didnt contract it! Whats even more interesting is that none of my children have ever had strep either despite multiple exposures from friends and classmates.
I obviously built up a strong resistance to strep throat at a young age and have been blessed with never having to suffer with it again by allowing my body to fight through it naturally. Its also quite possible I passed on my immunity to my children via breastfeeding, although that is obviously just an educated guess on my part.
For others, the article triggered an aha moment with more than just a few deciding once and for all to stare down the strep throat demon and win!
