How To Take It

Vitamin D Reduces Autoimmune Diseases: New Research

As with all supplements, check with a health care provider before taking vitamin K or giving it to a child.

People whose bodies cant absorb enough vitamin K, because of gallbladder or biliary disease, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, or Crohn’s disease, will probably get more benefit from a multivitamin containing vitamin K than an individual vitamin K supplement. In certain circumstances, your doctor may give you a vitamin K shot.

The daily Adequate Intake for vitamin K is:

  • Infants birth – 6 months: 2 mcg
  • Infants 7 – 12 months: 2.5 mcg
  • Children 1 – 3 years: 30 mcg
  • Children 4 – 8 years: 55 mcg
  • Children 9 – 13 years: 60 mcg
  • Adolescents 14 – 18 years: 75 mcg

A single injection of vitamin K is also given at birth.

  • Men 19 years and older: 120 mcg
  • Women 19 years and older: 90 mcg
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women 14 – 18 years: 75 mcg
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women 19 years and older: 90 mcg

Can I Take Vitamins If I Am Taking Antibiotics

When you’re taking antibiotics, be mindful of the fact that your supplements may not play well with your antibiotic. Take a close look at your medications and your supplement list to determine whether you should continue taking vitamins and minerals while taking the antibiotic.

Video of the Day

Antibiotics and vitamins do not always work well together. Once you start taking an antibiotic, you may need to stop taking one or more of your supplements or alter the times you take them. Check with your doctor for detailed instructions.

Timing The Dosing Of Your Probiotics

When I have a client on an antibiotic regimen, I typically suggest that to minimize the killing of the probiotic species, to take the antibiotics and the probiotics at least five hours apart. I have found that clinically to work well*. Unfortunately, there is very little research on this unique issue.

However, research does illustrate that starting probiotics at the start of an antibiotic regimen vs. waiting until later does minimize potential adverse side effects from the antibiotic regimen*. The time of day is not typically a big issue, but youll want to keep in mind what times your antibiotic will be dosed as that will dictate the times you can optimally take your probiotic!

Random Assignment And Interventions

Participants were randomly assigned by the National Health and Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Centre by using computer-generated stratified permuted blocks to take either 30,000 or 60,000 IU cholecalciferol or a placebo once per month. We planned on 12 mo of intervention, but because of some delays in recruitment, 22% of participants were required to complete the study in 9â11 mo to comply with the expiry date of the investigational product. Participants were recruited between October 2010 and March 2011 . Participants, study investigators, and staff were blinded to treatment assignment until data collection and preliminary analyses were complete. The randomization code was held by the secretary of the data safety monitoring board.

Vitamin D Over Amoxicillin

Can a simple supplement such as vitamin D do wonders for your health? According to some new research published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases site, it can help you steer clear of antibiotics.

The second study divided a group of adults into two groups: those that took Vitamin D3 every day for a year and those that were given a placebo. “The overall infectious score was significantly reduced for patients allocated to the vitamin D group compared with the placebo group.”

These results, when taken together, provide an interesting picture of the potential health through nutrition rather than drugs. Make sure to talk to your doctor about the right way to take supplements and whether or not you need to start taking a vitamin D supplement to improve your overall health.

Mixing Vitamin C With Antibiotics Is Surprisingly Effective At Killing Off Cancer Stem Cells

Scientists have developed an unusual new way to fight cancer stem cellsâ combining antibiotics with vitamin C. Not only could the compound help treat tumours, it could also reduce the chance of the cancer returning.

Therapies mixing doxycycline and vitamin C were up to 100 times more effective at killing off CSCs in the lab when compared with another anti-cancer agent being tested, 2-Deoxy-D-glucose.

The new study actually builds on previous work by the same team from the University of Salford in the UK, which looked at how vitamin C could be used to kill off CSCs by stopping cell mitochondria from producing energy.

First the antibiotic stops the cancerous cells from switching between different types of energy source to stay alive, forcing them to rely solely on glucose. In technical terms, it makes the cells metabolically inflexible, and itâs enough to kill some cancer cells on its own.

It doesnât take all of them though, and scientists think this is why certain tumours become drug-resistant â they switch to an alternative source of nutrients to keep growing in the body.

With that restriction in place, the vitamin C then comes in and acts as a âsecond punchâ, removing the source of that glucose and effectively starving the CSCs to death.

âIn this scenario, vitamin C behaves as an inhibitor of glycolysis, which fuels energy production in mitochondria, the âpowerhouseâ of the cell,âsays one of the team, Federica Sotgia.

Possible Interactions With: Calcium

If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use calcium supplements without first talking to your doctor.

Alendronate — Calcium may interfere with the absorption of alendronate, a medication used to treat osteoporosis. Calcium-containing products should be taken at least 2 hours before or after alendronate.

Antacids that contain aluminum — When calcium citrate is taken with aluminum-containing antacids, the amount of aluminum absorbed into the blood may be increased significantly. This is a particular problem for people with kidney disease, for whom the aluminum levels may become toxic.

Blood pressure medications — Taking calcium with a beta-blocker may interfere with blood levels of both the calcium and the beta-blocker. Study results are conflicting, however. Similarly, it has been reported that calcium interferes with calcium channel blockers , but these study results are also controversial. If you take a beta-blocker or calcium-channel blocker, do not take calcium supplements without your doctorâs supervision.

Cholesterol-lowering medications — A class of medications known as bile acid sequestrants , used to treat high cholesterol, may interfere with normal calcium absorption and increase the loss of calcium in the urine. Supplementation, therefore, with calcium and vitamin D may be recommended by your health care provider.

Diuretics — Different types of diuretics interact with calcium in opposite ways.

Can I Take Probiotics With Vitamin D

Combined vitamin D and probiotic supplementation might also have a strong synergistic effect on hormonal profiles and biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. The combination of vitamins E and A was associated with an increase in the amount of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and a decrease in the ratio of total to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

However, the authors did not find any significant effect of the supplement on serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, or triglycerides. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study conducted by the same group of investigators , participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or a supplement containing 1,000 IU of cholecalciferol for 12 wk.

The supplement significantly increased the serum concentrations of 25 , 25, and DHEA-S in both men and women, but there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of changes in any of these parameters.

What Supplement Should Not Be Taken With Vitamin D

Dont take this blood pressure drug if youre taking high amounts of vitamins D and D. Hypercalcemia can be caused by high levels of vitamin D. Orlistat is a name for Xenical and Zantac. This drug is used to treat high cholesterol. It can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and is not recommended for people who are at high risk for these conditions.

If you are taking this drug, talk to your doctor about whether it is safe for you to continue taking it. This medicine may cause some of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These symptoms usually go away on their own within a few hours after you stop taking the medicine.

However, if you have any of these symptoms, call your healthcare provider right away or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. You may need to stay in the hospital for several days to recover from your symptoms. Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.

Dangers Of Mixing Medications And Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements are widely used and include vitamins, minerals, and other less familiar substancessuch as amino acids, botanicals, and botanical-derived ingredients. Tens of millions of people in the U.S. take some kind of dietary supplement along with a prescription medication.

Combining dietary supplements and medications could have dangerous and even life-threatening effects. For example, drugs for HIV/AIDS, heart disease, depression, treatments for organ transplants, and birth control pills are less effective when taken with St. Johns wort, an herbal supplement. Depending on the medication involved, the results can be serious.

In addition, warfarin , ginkgo biloba , aspirin, and vitamin E can each thin the blood. Taking any of these products together may increase the potential for internal bleeding or stroke.

Dont Assume Natural Means Safe

Some consumers may believe that a so-called natural product, such as an herbal supplement or fish oil, cant hurt them. Natural does not always mean safe.

For example, many weight loss products claim to be all-natural or herbal, but their ingredients may interact with medications or may be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions.

How Should I Take Multivitamins

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.

Never take more than the recommended dose of a multivitamin. Avoid taking more than one multivitamin product at the same time unless your doctor tells you to. Taking similar vitamin products together can result in a vitamin overdose or serious side effects.

Many multivitamin products also contain minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Minerals can cause side effects such as tooth staining, increased urination, stomach bleeding, uneven heart rate, confusion, and muscle weakness or limp feeling. Read the label of any multivitamin product you take to make sure you are aware of what it contains.

Take your multivitamin with a full glass of water.

You must chew the chewable tablet before you swallow it.

Place the sublingual tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. Do not chew a sublingual tablet or swallow it whole.

Measure liquid medicine carefully. Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device .

Use multivitamins regularly to get the most benefit.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

Store multivitamins in their original container. Storing multivitamins in a glass container can ruin the medication.

New Therapy Almost 100 Times More Effective Than 2

The previous research from the team found that vitamin C alone was up to 10 times more effective for killing CSCs than 2-DG. However, adding Doxycycline to the therapy made it almost 100 times more effective.

What is more, the researchers identified a further eight compounds that could be administered after Doxycycline to deliver the second punch to CSCs.

This is further evidence that vitamin C and other non-toxic compounds may have a role to play in the fight against cancer, says Prof. Lisanti.

Our results indicate it is a promising agent for clinical trials, and as an add-on to more conventional therapies, to prevent tumor recurrence, further disease progression, and metastasis.

This Commonly Prescribed Drug Comes With A Long List Of Potential Interactions We Asked The Experts What To Steer Clear Of While Taking The Antibiotic

by Health Writer

Every drug has the potential to interact with something else youre ingesting , and the antibiotic cephalexin is no different. Thats the reason your physician should ask you what else youre taking before prescribing it .

If youve never heard of cephalexin, it is whats called a cephalosporin antibiotic. These commonly prescribed antibiotics are used to treat respiratory infections , urinary tract infections, skin infections, and more. Cephalexin is considered a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, which means it targets only specific strains of bacteria.

If you do a quick internet search on the drug, youll see a laundry list of potentially problematic medications and supplements that cause negative health issues when taken with cephalexin. But experts say many of these side effects are unlikely, and some are more common than others.

A big one to be aware of: If youre taking the , which lowers blood sugar levels, cephalexin can be a problem, says Alia Aaeedy, the director of pharmacy at Texas Surgical Hospital in Plano, Texas. Can I Use Vitamin C Serum And Salicylic Acid Together

Can I Take Expired Medicine?

Vitamin C should not be used with acidic substances like as glycolic or salicylic acid. It’s all about the pH, as Wee says! When used with acidic compounds like as glycolic or salicylic acid, their pH might be altered, reducing the efficacy of your vitamin C. However, these acids can also be applied separately for multiple treatments per skin condition, so this combination shouldn’t cause any problems for your skin.

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxyacid that removes dead cells and unclog pores while treating acne scars and inflammatory marks. It can also be used to treat psoriasis, dermatitis, and other skin conditions. This ingredient can be found in many face washes and products for skin care, such as SaliCet SPF 15 Anti-Aging Moisturizer from Weisler Laboratories. Salicylic acid is known to work well when combined with other ingredients that kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and help heal wounds.

Glycolic acid is a natural alpha hydroxyacid that removes dead skin cells to reveal fresher, more vibrant skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve pain associated with acne and other skin conditions. This ingredient can be found in many face washes and products for skin care, such as Glycolic Acid 10% + BHA 3% from Dermalogica.
