Some Ingredients May Cause Adverse Reactions

Should You Take Probiotics After a Course of Antibiotics?

People with allergies or intolerances should read the labels of probiotic supplements carefully, since they might contain ingredients they could react to.

For example, some of the supplements contain allergens such as dairy, egg or soy.

These ingredients should be avoided by anyone who is allergic, as they may trigger an allergic reaction. If necessary, read labels carefully to avoid these ingredients .

Similarly, yeast-based probiotics should not be taken by those with yeast allergies. Instead, a bacteria-based probiotic should be used .

Milk sugar, or lactose, is also used in many probiotic supplements .

While studies suggest that most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate up to 400 mg of lactose in medications or supplements, there have been case reports of adverse effects from probiotics .

Since a small number of people with lactose intolerance may experience unpleasant gas and bloating when consuming lactose-containing probiotics, they may want to choose lactose-free products.

In addition to containing powerful probiotics, some supplements also contain prebiotics. These are plant fibers that humans cannot digest, but that bacteria can consume as food. The most common types are lactulose, inulin and various oligosaccharides (

Simple Tips To Support Immune Health

1.Eat well, feel wellYour immune system benefits reaps the benefits of a healthy diet. Be sure to eat plenty of fruit, non-starchy veggies, protein, healthy fats, fermented foods, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds to support health and wellness. If you can, try to avoid unhealthy fats, along with foods high in starches and sugar.

2.Get plenty of sleep It may seem like there are too few hours in the day to get everything done, but cutting into your sleep time is not the answer. Not only has sleep deprivation been linked to depression, irritability and poor concentration, but too little sleep can also impact your immune health and make it harder for your body to fend off germs and other harmful invaders. Try to get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night for optimal well-being.

3.Wash your hands oftenAccording to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, keeping your hands clean is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy and to prevent spreading germs to others. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that have been shown to offer a wide array of health benefits.

As such, probiotic supplements and probiotic-rich foods have become popular natural treatments for a number of health conditions, including digestive issues like diarrhea .

This article explains how probiotics may help combat diarrhea, reviews which strains are the most effective, and addresses the possible side effects associated with probiotic use.

2 ).

The bacteria in your gut collectively known as the gut microbiota can be both negatively and positively affected by various factors, including diet, stress, and medication use.

When gut bacteria composition becomes imbalanced and the normal population of probiotics is disrupted, it can lead to negative health effects, such as an increased risk of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and digestive symptoms like diarrhea .

The World Health Organization defines diarrhea as having three or more loose or watery stools in a 24hour period. Acute diarrhea lasts fewer than 14 days while persistent diarrhea lasts 14 days or longer .

Supplementing with probiotics may help prevent certain types of diarrhea and help treat diarrhea by repopulating and maintaining beneficial gut bacteria and correcting an imbalance.

Side Effects And Interactions

Some individuals experience minor side effects like mild bloating, flatulence, or more frequent bowel movements for the first few days of taking a new probiotic. This is your body getting used to the probiotic and potentially cleaning out harmful substances like pathogens.

However, if these side effects persist beyond the first week of taking a probiotic, stop taking the product and consult a physician.

If you experience more serious side effects like severe stomach cramps, severe diarrhea, allergic reactions, dizziness, swelling, or difficulty breathing, discontinue the product and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

The Lack Of Consistency In The Findings On Probiotics Comes In Part Because They Are Being Treated Like Conventional Drugs

This opens the door to developing personalised probiotic treatments based on someones genetic profile. Such a system is realistic and could be developed relatively soon, says Elinav, but at this stage it remains a proof of concept. To become a reality, it will need more research on probiotic tailoring and testing more bacterial strains in larger groups of people.

This kind of personalisation may release the full potential of probiotic treatments for gut health. At the moment, the lack of consistency in the findings on probiotics comes in part because they are being treated like conventional drugs. When you take a paracetamol tablet, you can be more or less sure that the active component will do its job and work on receptors in your brain, dulling your sensation of pain. This is because most peoples pain receptors are similar enough to react in the same way to the drug.

But the microbiome is not just a receptor it is closer to an ecosystem, and sometimes likened to a rainforest in its complexity.

As a result, finding and tailoring a probiotic treatment that will work on something as intricate and individual as your own internal ecosystem is no easy task. And with that in mind, its not so surprising that a dried-out pack of bacteria from a supermarket shelf may well not do the trick.

Given The Very Heavy Involvement Of The Industry Clear Conclusions As To Whether Probiotics Are Truly Helpful To Humans Remain To Be Proven Erin Elinav

The rate of continued moderate to severe gastroenteritis within two weeks was slightly higher in the probiotic group than in the placebo group . And there was no difference between the two groups in terms of the duration of diarrhoea or vomiting.

Despite evidence such as this, the demand for probiotics is large and growing. In 2017, the market for probiotics was more than $1.8bn, and it is predicted to reach $66bn by 2024.

Given the very heavy involvement of the industry, clear conclusions as to whether probiotics are truly helpful to humans remain to be proven, says Elinav. This is the reason why regulatory authorities such as the USs Food and Drug Administration and European regulators have yet to approve a probiotic for clinical use.

Taking probiotics when your gut health is weak may not be a good idea

But that is not to write off probiotics completely. The problem with them may not be with the probiotics themselves, but the way we are using them. Often probiotics are bought off the shelf consumers may not know exactly what they are getting, or even whether the culture they are buying is still alive.

Elinav and his colleagues have also carried out research on who will benefit from probiotics and who wont. By measuring the expression of certain immune-related genes, the team was able to predict who would be receptive to probiotic bacteria colonising their gut, and for whom they would simply pass through without taking hold.

How Do Antibiotics Work

Renew Life® BoulardiiMAX, Antibiotic

You likely know that antibiotics are medications that kill harmful bacteria that cause infections such as strep throat or a urinary tract infection. Broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as amoxicillin or tetracycline, target multiple strains of bacteria at once. Newer, narrow-spectrum antibiotics zero in on a more limited range of organisms. The downside of both is that they can kill good bacteria, too, but the broad-spectrum antibiotics are the ones that carries the most significant risk. When good bacteria get wiped out, you may get an upset stomach with loose stool, a phenomenon known as antibiotic-associated diarrhea . In addition, women prone to yeast infections may experience one after a course of antibiotics as fungus can thrive in the genital area without enough good gut flora hanging around.

How Do You Know Probiotics Are Working

Hannah Kleinfeld

Probiotics are the good bacteria in the gut which help support a healthy gut microbiome. Some positive effects of probiotics include fighting off bad bacteria, improving digestion and regulating bowel movements, supporting the immune system, and helping with weight loss.

Your gut contains billions of good bacteria that support many critical functions in your body, including digestion, nutrient absorption and the immune system. This world of good bacteria is referred to as your gut microbiome.

Environmental factors such as a diet of overly processed foods, certain medications and stress can disrupt this ecosystem of good bacteria living in your gut. When the ecosystem of gut bacteria gets disrupted, ailments such as digestive discomfort, irregular bowel movements, more frequent illness and allergies can develop.

Over the past few years, probiotics have become one of the most popular supplements. Probiotics are dietary supplements that consist of some of these many good bacteria that live in a healthy gut and that can help rebalance and strengthen your gut microbiome.

Probiotics can help with improving digestion, gut health and overall wellbeing. So, lets say you were to start taking a probiotic supplement which in our opinion, almost everyone should how do you know that your probiotic is working?

Choose The Right Probiotic For Your Health Condition

Not all probiotics are created equal. The combination of strains in the probiotic supplement plays a critical role in determining its impact on various health outcomes.

Each probiotic strain performs a different function. Depending on the purpose of the probiotic, you will find different strains in the composition.

Several studies, including this powerful study by Visconti et al., have demonstrated that probiotic strains work in teams for optimal impact.

While you can get probiotic bacteria by eating foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and kefir, a high-quality, science-based probiotic supplement will contain strains that are mindfully combined for optimal impact.

At OMNi-BiOTiC®, our products are tailored to specific health conditions , rooted in 25 years of microbiome research and clinical studies to demonstrate efficacy. For example, OMNi-BiOTiC® STRESS Release was specifically formulated for individuals with leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome.

In a clinical study with IBS patients, OMNi-BiOTiC® STRESS Release demonstrated a reduction in symptom severity, improved bacterial diversity in the intestines, and reduced Zonulin, the main marker for leaky gut.

What Are Probiotics Used For

Do You Need Probiotics for Down There?

Probiotics are used for regulating the gut microbiome. Probiotics colonize the lining of our digestive system and ensure that the natural gut flora can perform its role in vital functions in your body, which can help with routine constipation and diarrhea.

Probiotics are good bacteria that naturally occur in a healthy intestine. Our intestine consists of billions of bacteria that are critical to many important processes within the body, including digesting food, absorbing nutrients, eliminating toxins, and preventing pathogens from spreading.

When this world of bacteria is disrupted by a poor diet, stress, or strong medication, probiotics help to restore your gut health.

Taking a high-quality probiotic supplement can improve and maintain your long-term health and wellbeing.

The Surprising Finding Was That The Group Who Received The Probiotic Had The Poorest Response In Terms Of Their Microbiome

As expected, a lot of major changes occurred in the function of the microbes many of which died because of the antibiotics, says Elinav.

The volunteers were divided into three groups. The first was a wait-and-see group, with no intervention after the antibiotics. The second group was given a common probiotic for a month. The third was given perhaps the least savoury option: a faecal transplant. This group had a small sample of their own stool taken before the antibiotic treatment returned to their colon once the treatment was over.

The surprising finding was that the group who received the probiotic had the poorest response in terms of their microbiome. They were the slowest group to return to a healthy gut. Even at the end of the study after five months of monitoring this group had not yet reached their pre-antibiotic gut health.

Probiotics won’t work exactly the same for everyone because gut biomes are different

We have found a potentially alarming adverse effect of probiotics, says Elinav.

The good news, incidentally, is that the group who received a faecal transplant did very well indeed. Within days, this group completely reconstituted their original microbiome.

So many people are taking antibiotics all over the world, says Elinav. We can aim to better understand this potentially very important adverse effect that we didnt realise existed.
