Untreated chlamydia can put your health at risk. Make an appointment with your provider immediately if you notice any symptoms of chlamydia, and get regular STI screenings to avoid complications later.

Complications of chlamydia for people with vaginas

Untreated chlamydia can cause:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease . PID is a serious condition that requires hospitalization. It can occur when an untreated STI, like chlamydia, damages your reproductive organs. PID can lead to infertility and chronic pelvic pain. It can also cause an ectopic pregnancy, which is life-threatening for the fetus and potentially deadly for the mother or gestational parent, too.
  • Pregnancy complications. An untreated infection can lead to pre-term delivery. Also, if youre pregnant and have chlamydia, you can pass the infection on to your newborn. Babies born with chlamydia may have pneumonia or conjunctivitis that could lead to blindness if not treated.

Complications of chlamydia for people with penises

Untreated chlamydia can cause:

  • Epididymitis. Infection can spread to the testicles and the tube that carries sperm to your testicles , causing symptoms like pain, swelling and tenderness in your testicles.
  • Reduced fertility. Chlamydia can harm your sperm, negatively impacting your ability to conceive.

Complications of chlamydia that can affect all genders

When To See A Doctor

While bacterial vaginosis is usually mild, in more severe cases it can have lasting impacts if left untreated. Bacterial vaginosis symptoms may appear similar to other vaginal infections, and at home remedies may be unsuccessful, so itâs important to see your doctor if symptoms do not disappear.

Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics that will usually treat bacterial vaginosis within one week. Finish all of your antibiotics, even if your symptoms go away early. If you symptoms donât go away within a few days of finishing the antibiotic, go back to your doctor.

If left untreated, bacterial vaginosis can pose some severe health risks.

  • A bacterial vaginosis infection may increase your chance of contracting HIV
  • Bacterial vaginosis also makes it more likely that you will contract other STDs like chlamydia or gonorrhea. These STDs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease , which can make it difficult to have children.
  • If you are pregnant and contract bacterial vaginosis, a premature birth becomes more likely.

Complications that may be seen in anyone include:

  • Other STIs. Chlamydia and gonorrhea both make you more susceptible to other STIs, including human immunodeficiency virus . Having chlamydia can also increase your risk of developing gonorrhea, and vice versa.
  • Reactive arthritis . Also called Reiters syndrome, this condition results from an infection in your urinary tract or intestines. Symptoms of this condition cause pain, swelling, or tightness in your joints and eyes, and a variety of other symptoms.
  • Infertility. Damage to reproductive organs or to sperm can make it more challenging or, in some cases, impossible to become pregnant or to impregnate your partner.

Treating Toddlers And Children

Chlamydia in toddlers and children may occur as a result of sexual abuse and should be investigated. With that said, chlamydia transmitted during childbirth can sometimes take up to three years before symptoms develop in the child’s throat, rectum, or genitals.

If chlamydia is confirmed, either erythromycin, azithromycin, or doxycycline may be used depending on the child’s age and/or weight.

Treatment Recommendations for Children

Time To Development Of Std And Std Rates

Women randomized to metronidazole gel experienced a significantly longer time to development of STD compared to women randomized to observation . The median time to develop STD was 94 days in the observational group and 138 days in the metronidazole group. The 6-month rate of STDs was 2.29/person-year in the observational group compared to a 6-month STD rate of 1.58/person-year in the metronidazole group which was significantly lower. A comparison of STD rates for the 6-month period following the end of the intervention found no significant differences between the groups. The overall STD rates for the entire 12-month period was 1.64 in the observational group and 1.31 in the treatment group. Follow-up was similar in both cohorts . The distribution of STDs in the treatment group over 12 months was as follows: 3 chlamydia, 8 gonorrhea, 16 trichomonas, 3 HSV-2, 3 PID and 2 combined infections. Among the observation group over 12 months there were 13 chlamydia, 4 gonorrhea, 22 trichomonas, 5 HSV-2, 1 PID and 3 combined infections. Thus, the only significant difference between the groups in terms of individual pathogens was chlamydia. The proportion of chlamydia infections in the observation group compared to the treatment group was significantly greater .

Remedies For Bacterial Vaginosis

Sneaky Chlamydia | Do You Have It & Not Know It?

For some women, mild cases of bacterial vaginosis will go away on their own. However, there are a few remedies you can try at home to relieve symptoms and speed your recovery. If you are unsure whether you have bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, go see your doctor.

Short-Term Remedies

Probiotics, live bacteria found in some foods and supplements, might help restore balance to your vaginal bacteria. Studies show that eating yogurt or probiotic supplements may treat bacterial vaginosis, and is quite safe.

Long-Term Prevention

While doctors arenât sure how to prevent bacterial vaginosis, there are still some steps you can take that may help prevent it. These include:

  • Not having sex or reducing your number of partners
  • Using a male condom when you have sex
  • Avoiding scented soaps for vaginal cleansing

Several studies show that taking a 2000 IU/day dose of vitamin D supplements may help avoid BV infections.

Taking a daily womenâs probiotic with high levels of Lactobacilli may help keep your vaginal bacterial balance healthy. Many women say that probiotics help them avoid infections, but more research is needed on this subject.

While you have bacterial vaginosis, avoid sex until your infection is treated. It is unusual for bacterial vaginosis to spread to male sexual partners, but it can be spread to female sexual partners. If this happens, female partners may need to be treated as well.

  • one week treatment with doxycycline

Make sure that during your treatment, you should avoid having sex and your sexual partner should get treatment at the same time. Its very important to start your Chlamydia treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated Chlamydia can cause:

  • Fallopian tube inflammation

All of these conditions can have a very negative impact on your overall health as well as fertility. Once you know youve got Chlamydia, start your treatment promptly and stay healthy!

What Is The Treatment For Chlamydia

Chlamydia can be easily cured with antibiotics. HIV-positive persons with chlamydia should receive the same treatment as those who are HIV-negative.

Persons with chlamydia should abstain from sexual activity for 7 days after single dose antibiotics or until completion of a 7-day course of antibiotics, to prevent spreading the infection to partners. It is important to take all of the medication prescribed to cure chlamydia. Medication for chlamydia should not be shared with anyone. Although medication will stop the infection, it will not repair any permanent damage done by the disease. If a persons symptoms continue for more than a few days after receiving treatment, he or she should return to a health care provider to be reevaluated.

Repeat infection with chlamydia is common. Women whose sex partners have not been appropriately treated are at high risk for re-infection. Having multiple chlamydial infections increases a womans risk of serious reproductive health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy. Women and men with chlamydia should be retested about three months after treatment of an initial infection, regardless of whether they believe that their sex partners were successfully treated.

Infants infected with chlamydia may develop ophthalmia neonatorum and/or pneumonia. Chlamydial infection in infants can be treated with antibiotics.

If You Are Not Treated

Bacterial vaginosis is usually not serious. In some cases, however, it can cause infections in the uterus and fallopian tubes. It is important to treat bacterial vaginosis, especially before having an IUD inserted, an abortion, or tests done on the uterine lining. Both trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis have been linked to an increased risk of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Unfortunately there is no reliable way to avoid BV occurrence in future. It is really hard to prevent due to its natural origin and development. At the same time these useful tips will certainly come in handy if you want to reduce possibility of BV occurrence in the future:

  • avoid using too much bath oil, scented soap, bubbles, antiseptics and other substances while taking a bath
  • avoid using powerful detergents while washing your underwear

Study Procedure And Data Collection

On day 0, a pregnancy test will be conducted and history will be collected by the clinician. During a pelvic examination, the clinician will ensure intact mucous membranes and anatomy, observe whether there is homogenous milky or creamy discharge , take swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhea, BV , candidiasis, and trichomonas, and perform a Whiff test using a provided standardized 10 % potassium hydroxide solution . Vaginal discharge will also be tested for pH . Where facilities permit clue cells will be examined, as the fourth Amsel criterion. On this day, the recruiting clinician will confirm participation, eligibility, and exclusion criteria using provided protocol forms and will collect the signed consent form and the demographic and medical history questionnaires provided.

The blinded treatment pack is allocated by the recruiting clinician in the randomization order to sequential participants on day 0. The participant package also contains: vaginal applicator pads non-lubricated non-latex condoms a diary to record daily use of the treatment information sheet outlining follow-up instructions and emergency contact numbers for the study members. Participants will self-administer the blinded treatment cream intravaginally each evening immediately prior to sleep for 10 days. The participants will be instructed to use a provided pad during day and night. Each participant will record daily compliance, side effects, and symptoms in the journal provided.

Gonorrhea Versus Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection is inflammation of the urethra and bladder that can lead to a kidney infection if left untreated.

Symptoms such as frequent urination, a burning sensation while urinating, urgent urination, and lower abdominal pain can also be signs and symptoms of gonorrhea.

To differentiate between two conditions, itâs important to analyze signs and symptoms in the right context. In this case, that means considering the following:

  • The gender of the patient
  • What preceded the event
  • When symptoms first appeared
  • How the disease has been evolving over time

Itâs important to distinguish between these two conditions because unlike a UTI , gonorrhea need to be diagnosed and treated because otherwise it can cause irreversible reproductive system damage .

What Can Happen If Bv Is Not Treated

It is somewhat rare that untreated BV can lead to complications and other problems, but it is possible, so treating BV swiftly is a priority. The most serious complication BV can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease . This goes beyond a vaginal infection and involves infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes. PID can lead to serious complications such as infertility.

If you are pregnant and have bacterial vaginosis, which is quite common, leaving it untreated can lead to preterm birth and low birth weight. If you suspect you have BV, notify your obstetrician immediately.

Untreated BV can also raise your risk of contracting certain sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Doctors are not sure why this correlation exists. A woman with BV is also more likely to contract herpes simplex virus or HIV. Having BV also increases the odds that a woman with a sexually transmitted infection will pass it on to her partner.

Bacterial vaginosis also increases the risk of gynecological surgery complications post-surgery. This includes surgery such as dilation and curettage or hysterectomy.

In vitro models consistently demonstrate that sufficient and sustained IFN exposure can eradicate Ct in human cervical epithelial cells. Given this, we next determined whether clearing women had higher local levels of IFN illustrative of a more robust immune response, compared to women with persisting infection. Low levels of IFN in cervicovaginal lavages were observed in all women, irrespective of clearance status, and IFN levels were similar between clearers and non-clearers . In sum, women that clear Ct generally have lower levels of IFN than that required to clear Ct in vitro therefore, IFN potentially could act in concert with additional factors in the local environment to clear Ct in vivo.

Figure 4 Associations of Ct clearance and CSTs with genital inflammation. Log10-transformed IFN levels plotted by Ct clearance indicate clearers have slightly higher levels of IFN than non-clearers. PCA performed over the log10 transformed cytokine values show a large overlap between Ct clearers and non-clearers in cytokines . When colored by CST the PCA performed over the log transformed cytokine values shows a distinction between the Lactobacillus spp.-dominated CST2 and CST3 which associate more with IP-10, IL-6, and RANTES compared to the BV-like CST1 .

What Are The Complications Of Chlamydia What If It Is Not Treated

Complications of untreated chlamydia include a significant number of women will develop pelvic inflammatory disease some women with pelvic inflammatory disease will develop a form of liver disease women may develop chronic pelvic pain and become sterile due to blockage of the Fallopian tubes that allow the egg to be transported from the ovary to the women’s womb.

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection in your urinary system, including the

  • bladder the organ that collects and stores urine

  • urethra the tube that carries urine from your bladder out of your body

There are two kinds of UTIs: cystitis and urethritis. Cystitis is an infection of the bladder. Urethritis is an infection of the urethra. If left untreated, either of these can spread and cause a kidney infection. So even though UTIs are really common, youve got to take them seriously.

What causes UTIs?

Although UTIs arent spread from one person to another like STDs, having sex can lead to or worsen UTIs. But you dont have to have sex to get a UTI. Anything that brings bacteria in contact with your urethra can cause a UTI.

Is there treatment for UTIs?
