They are called urgent care clinics. Not antibiotic clinics.
But a team from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the University of Utah, and The Pew Charitable Trusts analyzed insurance claims data and found that even when patients visited urgent care clinics for reasons that shouldn’t have required antibiotics, they still got prescribed antibiotics 46% of the time.
Nearly half the time? Pew. That’s a lot of inappropriate and unnecessary antibiotic prescribing.
The results of this analysis appeared in a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The team consisted of Danielle L. Palms, MPH, Lauri A. Hicks, DO, Monina Bartoces, PhD, and Katherine E. Fleming-Dutra, MD from the CDC, Adam L. Hersh, MD, PhD from the University of Utah, and Rachel Zetts, MPH and David Y. Hyun, MD from The Pew Charitable Trusts. The medical and pharmaceutical claims data came from the 2014 Truven Health Analytics MarketScan Claims and Encounter Database, consisting of people younger than 65 years of age who have employer-sponsored health insurance.

More Than Just A Furry Friend
The concept of an ESA has actually been around for decades.
When the federal government enacted the Fair Housing Act of 1968, it blocked landlords from discriminating against people with disabilities, giving tenants the right to reasonable accommodation to help them manage their disability. In the past, ESAs were allowed on airplanes, but in 2020, the U.S. Department of Transportation changed its guidelines after a sharp rise in animal-related incidents during flights made it clear that people were simply purchasing ESA designations through online services in order to fly with their pets.

A recent analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that hospitals and medical offices are not the biggest offenders when it comes to over-prescribing antibiotics.

The team of researchers from the CDC, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the University of Utah estimated that in 2014 the rate of inappropriate antibiotic use in urgent care clinics was almost double the rate they saw in emergency departments, and almost triple the rate seen in medical offices.
Urgent care centers have been springing up at a rapid rate all over the country. In fact, there are now more than 10,000 frequently-visited clinics around the country and doctors fear that this will be a difficult problem to fix.
In a commentary in the July issue of the JAMA Journal, three doctors from the University of California Department of Medicine and the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation cited two possible reasons for the problem
First, patients who visit urgent care clinics do not see their regular physician, who might be in a better position to discourage a patient from demanding antibiotics as a quick fix for a cold or flu.

A nurse will insert a needle into the patient and begin introducing the medication. This process can happen slowly over a certain period, or the nurse can set it to give the patient the entire dosage all at once. Most IV treatments can take under an hour, but this will depend on the drip rate and what type of illness or disease the team is treating.
