Four cases of a serious, sometimes fatal infection called melioidosis that have bedeviled public health investigators for months appear to have been linked to an aromatherapy room spray sold at Walmart, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday.
The product, Better Homes and Gardens Lavender and Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones, was sold at 55 Walmart locations and on the companys website from February to Oct. 21. Walmart has issued a recall for roughly 3,900 bottles of the product that it sold. The recall includes five other scents of the Better Homes and Gardens Gem Room Spray: lemon and mandarin, lavender, peppermint, lime and eucalyptus, and sandalwood and vanilla.
The four cases that have been detected in the United States occurred over a five-month period, from March to late July. Two of the infected people died, including a child. The cases occurred in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas and Georgia, where a bottle of aromatherapy spray retrieved from the home of one of the fatal cases led to a break in the case.
The discovery involved a huge amount of detective work by local public health officers and the CDC.
What To Do If You Have The Sprays
The CPSC is advising consumers who have the products to stop using them immediately. Since the bottles may contain dangerous bacteria, consumers should take extra precautions.
If you have one of the sprays, do not throw the bottle away in your regular trash. You will need to return it to the Walmart store where you purchased it. Here are the steps the CPSC says to take to make sure that you handle the product safely.

Cdc Confirms Bacterial Strain In Aromatherapy Spray Sold At Walmart In Melioidosis Outbreak
CDC emphasized that consumers should not pour the contents down the drain or throw the bottle in the trash. Burkholderia pseudomallei, the bacteria that cause melioidosis, does not normally live in soil and water in the United States. If the spray bottles end up in landfills, the bacteria could become established and cause future melioidosis cases in the U.S.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today confirmed that bacteria in a Better Homes & Gardens aromatherapy spray in a Georgia melioidosis patients home genetically matches the bacterial strains in the patient, and three other patients in Kansas, Minnesota, and Texas infected since March.

Walmart Recalls Essential Oil Spray For Deadly Bacteria
The agency has issued an urgent alert to doctors to be on the lookout for symptoms of melioidosis, which can be difficult to diagnosis.
Walmart has recalled 3,900 bottles of Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones, which comes in 6 different scents: Lemon & Mandarin, Lavender, Peppermint, Lime & Eucalyptus, and Sandalwood & Vanilla. All bottles of the spray were pulled from store shelves in October.
They were previously sold at 55 stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com. The spray was manufactured in India. The bacteria was found in the Lavender & Chamomile scent, and the CDC is now testing the others.
Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria found in the spray has been linked to four infections in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas and Georgia. Two children were infected, including one who died.
The most recent death was a patient who died in a Georgia hospital in July. Post-mortem testing revealed melioidosis was the case of death.
CDC disease detectives have been urgently hunting the source of these rare cases of melioidosis, an infection thatâs usually seen in Asia.
When the Georgia patient was identified, they tested products found in the patientâs home and found the bacteria. Genetic testing revealed it was the same bacteria associated with the other four infections.

Damage Has Been Done Family At Risk

During the CDC investigation, tests found seven members of Lylahs extended family have antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei, indicating they were exposed even if they werent obviously sickened. In rare cases, this type of bacteria can remain dormant in a persons body for more than 20 years, before reactivating and causing disease.
Lylah continues to make slow and steady progress recovering from the brain damage caused by the bacteria, Kennon said. She goes to therapy three to four days a week and is able to move more of her upper body. While shes still not talking, she is able to make more sounds. Deadly Bacteria Found In Aerosol Spray
An aromatherapy spray sold at 55 Walmart stores and on Walmarts website is being recalled after lab tests showed it was contaminated with the same type of bacteria that killed two people and sickened two others this year.
The product, Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones, was found in the home of a Georgia resident who had died this summer.
Anyone who has the spray should stop using it immediately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises. Great care needs to be taken in handling and disposing of the bottle.
CDC says it should not be thrown out in regular trash but doubled bagged in clean, clear zip-top bags, placed in a small cardboard box and returned to a Walmart store. Any sheets or linens sprayed with the product should be washed and dried completely in a hot dryer, and counters and other surfaces that may have been sprayed should be disinfected.
Anyone who handled the spray bottle should wash hands thorough after touching it or linens.
Those who used the spray within the past 21 days and are suffering from fever, pain, respiratory distress or other symptoms of the disease melioidosis should seek medical care and tell the doctor about exposure to it. Doctors also may recommend that those who were exposed to the spray but dont have symptoms receive antibiotics to prevent infection.

Pork products sold at Canadian Walmart stores have not been tested, but Canada does import pork from the US. According to the US Meat Export Federation, last year, 205,568 metric tonnes of US pork valued at USD$765 million was exported to Canada.
As of December 2018, in Canada, a veterinary prescription is required for antibiotics given to farm animals, and antibiotic use in the livestock industry has decreased. However, administering antibiotics to farm animals for disease prevention is still commonplace.
The results from the Walmart US pork testing comes on the heels of a Canadian study from the Council of Canadian Academies warning of the potential rise in the percentage of bacterial infections that are resistant to antibiotic treatments. The cases, diagnosed this year, were identified in Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota and Texas. Two of the people, including a child, have died.
On Friday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Walmart, which sold the product, Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstone, is recalling nearly 4,000 bottles.
That product, discovered in the home in one of the four patients, was found to be contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria called Burkholderia pseudomallei.
Federal health officials are now testing products found in the homes of the other three patients.
Patty Davis, a CPSC spokesperson, said the agency is extremely concerned about the potential for further, potentially dangerous, bacterial exposure.
“CPSC immediately reached out to Walmart to work with the company to get this product out of consumers hands,” Davis said. “We want to prevent anyone else from being sickened or from dying.”
Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria are usually never found in household products, at least in the U.S.
