The Company Offered Various Generic Medications At No Cost Under This Program

Publix is ending its free prescription program. So here are other options for cheap drugs

With this soon-to-be-eliminated program, Publix distributed several different generic prescription medications to customers for free. This included 14-day supplies of generic antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, SMZ-TMP, and penicillin, as well as 90-day supplies of generic hypertension and diabetes medications such as amlodipine, metformin, and lisinopril, according to Supermarket News.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb

Shoppers only needed to provide pharmacists with a prescription for medications covered by the program to get them at no cost. And per Supermarket News, there was no limit on the number of free prescriptions and that they were provided at no charge, regardless of what a customer’s insurance coverage was.

“We are proud to provide a service that helps our customers afford their medications. As the cost of health care continues to rise, this program has become even more important to our customers and our communities,” Dain Rusk, vice president of pharmacy at Publix, said in a statement in 2020, after the company had filled its 100 million prescription under the program.

13 ways to save money at Publix
Reporter:

Free prescriptions will soon be a thing of the past at Publix pharmacies.

The program is set to end on June 1. A pharmacist in Lehigh Acres confirmed it to WINK News.

In 2020, Publix celebrated the milestone of 100 million prescriptions filled under its free medication program.

Publix has yet to respond to questions from WINK News about the decision.

The program helped people like Thomas Kotula who turned to the pharmacy when he was down and out.

Thats one of the reasons we like to go there is, Kotula said. When we had no money.

Publix offers a free prescription program for drugs like amoxicillin, lisinopril, metformin and amlodipine.

Carol Roll said if there was cost involved to get her medication, she would go somewhere else.

I think theyre making a mistake. Im not sure why because its not costing them and amlodipine is a generic drug, and its not costing them that much. And to raise the prices is not good, said Laurel Click, a snowbird.

According to West Orlando News in Central Florida, a flyer is being handed out to customers telling them of the change.

The once-free drugs could cost around $7.50 for a 14-day prescription and that cost is costing them customers.

Well probably start going to some other places a little bit more, Kotula said.

Generic prescriptions were free of copays.

Many of the free drugs go for $4 at Walmart.

Publix: No Charge For Antibiotics

By George Anderson

Publix has come up with one way to compete with the $4 charged for a 30-day supply of certain generic prescription drugs by Wal-Mart. The company will just give them away for free. Okay, not all of them, but seven of the most prescribed and least expensive generic oral antibiotics.

According to a Publix press release, the seven antibiotics, which include Amoxicillin, Cephalexin Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim , Ciprofloxacin , Penicillin VK, Ampicillin and Erythromycin , make up roughly 50 percent of the generic pediatric prescriptions filled at the companys 684 pharmacies.

The company said it will fill prescriptions for a 14-day supply of the antibiotics at no charge and will not place a limit on the number of prescriptions. According to IMS Health, the seven antibiotics generally run between $4 and $10.50 for a 14-day supply. Ciprofloxacin is more expensive costing $32.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist was on hand for the Publix announcement. “Health and wellness is crucial to every Floridians quality of life and paramount to the vitality of our state,” he said. “We appreciate great partners like Publix Super Markets working to further provide affordability and accessibility to quality prescription drugs for working families and seniors.”

Competing pharmacists, however, did give Publix high marks for its marketing prowess.

Publix Offers Free Generic Antibiotics

Wendy Toth 1 | Aug 13, 2007

LAKELAND, Fla. Publix Super Markets is now offering a selection of free generic antibiotics.

Starting last week, all of the retailer’s 684 pharmacies began participating in the program in five states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

New or current customers can fill a valid prescription of seven generic oral antibiotics at no cost. Each prescription is limited to a 14-day supply however, Publix is not limiting the number of prescriptions customers may fill for free.

The medications were chosen based on past customer use, Publix spokesman Dwaine Stevens told SN. These drugs are 50% of the generic prescriptions filled at Publix in the area of pediatrics. They are commonly used antibiotics so they represent the best benefit for our customers.

The plan is similar to one launched by Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich., in October 2006, just over a month after Wal-Mart Stores announced its plan to offer select generic prescription drugs at $4 for a 30-day supply. The drugs chosen by Publix are the same as those offered for free at Meijer: Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, and Ampicillin and Erythromycin.

Although Meijer, which operates in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, is seen to have been at least partially reacting to Wal-Mart’s initiative, Publix has acted almost a year later.

SUMMARY: Publix offers a 90-day supply of two dozen prescription drugs for just $7.50, which works to $2.50 a month. For the price comparison with GoodRx, I selected one dose and quantity for each drug. If you take a different dose, it may also be covered as part of the program. Read the fine print on Publixs website to find out. In nearly all cases, GoodRxs coupons werent able to beat Publixs $7.50 price. However, its worth noting that GoodRx typically displayed the $7.50 Publix price in its results.

The companys pharmacies on Wednesday stopped providing customers with free prescriptions for some medications. The program had been in place for 15 years but company officials announced in March that it would end on June 1.

Since 2007, Publix has provided more than 100 million free prescription drugs to customers at its 1,200 pharmacies. The program provided oral antibiotics along with blood pressure and diabetes medications.

We consistently evaluate our programs and services to ensure they are meeting the intended purpose and evolve over time, said company spokeswoman Hannah Herring. Medications offered through our program are typically covered through insurance plans.

The company will offer maintenance medications, including Metformin, Linsinopril and Amlodipine for $7.50 for a 90-day supply, Herring said. The antibiotic Amoxicillin will cost $7.50 for a 14-day supply, she said. There will be quantity limits on those medications, she said.
