These three vine-like plants all contain the oil urushiol, which causes that notorious itching, blisters and redness. Your dermatologist may prescribe a steroid medication to combat the skin irritation. However, in rare cases of exposure to these toxic plants, people who experience trouble breathing, sudden swelling or a spreading rash across the body especially on the face should seek emergency care. Breathing problems often arise when the toxic plants are burned and the urushiol gets into the air, where it is inhaled, although people highly allergic to urushiol can develop breathing issues just from skin contact with the plants.

Expecting To Be Seen By An Md

First offjust because youre not guaranteed to see an MD, it doesnt mean youre in mediocre hands. On the contrary, the nurse practitioners and assistant physicians at urgent care centers are fantastic and highly knowledgeable. They can offer a diagnosis, treatment plan, and direct support right when you need it.

Just make sure youre aware of who will be seeing you and to not expect a different level of degree.

Are You Currently Suffering From A Minor Illness

If you are currently in need of a minor illness treatment, then making an appointment or walking into an urgent care center as soon as possible for treatment is recommended. You do not want your minor illness to turn into something major, which could be harder to treat if you wait too long. The longer you wait, the worse your minor illness can become and that is something that you want to avoid.

Know you can choose to make an appointment with our urgent care clinic or you can simply choose to walk-in and receive the treatment you need to address your minor illness.

More Doctors Mean More Prescriptions

Can A Walk In Clinic Prescribe Anxiety Medication

Prescribing rates can vary between states and within states. Many factors can drive these differences, like age, for instance. Children under the age of 10 and the elderly both consume large amounts of antibiotics. Access to health insurance, which in the US is primarily provided through employment , also plays a role. So rates can vary based on the population makeup of a given area .

But, we found that the number of physicians per capita can also drive up prescribing. In other words, the more physicians there are per person in an area, the more prescriptions per person there will be.

Why would more physicians lead to more prescriptions? One reason is that more physicians simply means it is easier to see a doctor and thus people may go to visit a physician more often than they need to. This is sometimes referred to as supplier-induced demand.

The second reason is that physicians are competing for business either by increasing the number of patients they see by adding walk-in hours and same-day scheduling or by prescribing antibiotics more readily even if they wouldnt do any good to maintain good patient relationships or to help retain patients.

To try to understand the relative effect of access vs. competition in driving prescribing rates, we looked at what happens when retail and urgent care clinics move into an area.

Have a Question?

When Should You Go To The Er

Though a walk-in clinic provides a wide range of services, they are not equipped for many emergency situations. This includes trauma from a car accident, head injuries, complex bone fractures, heart attacks and severe burns.

If you experience any of these, you should either call 911 or head straight to the emergency room. If you are uncertain if the ER or walk-in is correct, consider whether or not you would go to your primary care physician with your injury or illness. If you would, then a walk-in is the best choice. Alternatively, you can call the walk-in clinic to ask what they recommend. Do this instead of calling or going to the ER when you are unsure. Going to the ER when you have an injury that could be cared for at a walk-in clinic, will likely cost you and the ER staff more time than necessary.

Additionally, you may need to seek ER care if your injury or illness occurs late at night or in the early morning. Retail clinics and urgent care facilities typically close no later than 10 pm and many close much earlier especially on weekends.

More Competition Means More Antibiotics

We found that these clinics are great for improving access when they are placed in areas that are poorer. So in these areas we find that a clinic results in more antibiotic prescriptions because access is better. This doesnt lead to competitive effects with physicians because the clinics are not drawing people away from physicians. Instead they allow people who would not have gone to the doctor to have access to the healthcare system.

In wealthier areas, where people already have access to providers, these retail clinics generally mean competition for physicians. So people now have a choice: they can just walk-in to a clinic or try to make an appointment at their doctor. Thus in areas with a lot of physicians, the introduction of a clinic and the resulting competition for patients pushed prescribing rates by physicians up even further.

Why Does It Matter

Treasure Coast doctor prescribing Ivermectin for COVID-19 despite FDA warning

According to the report, walk-in health clinics play a large role in providing outpatient care in the United States, receiving an estimated 10.5 million visits a year.

Given how frequently antibiotics are prescribed, it has led many people to think that if they see a doctor and dont get a prescription for them, they will not get better. And in situations in a walk-in clinic, like the ones in the study, when youre not seeing a regular doctor, patients may feel more comfortable demanding what they perceive to be the cure-all antibiotic prescription, leading to these higher rates of overuse.

When antibiotics are used to treat illnesses, including viral upper-respiratory tract infections , bronchitis/bronchiolitis, asthma/allergy, influenza and certain middle-ear infections , they will not be effective because these conditions are caused by viruses, not bacteria.

On top of that, according to the Mayo Clinic, taking an antibiotic for a viral infection wont keep other people from getting sick, may cause unnecessary and harmful side effects and promotes antibiotic resistance. And the outcome is serious: Around 2 million infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria occur in the United States each year, resulting in 23,000 deaths.

Antibiotics For Treating Minor Illnesses

Antibiotics are one of the more common prescriptions prescribed to those who are in need of urgent care services. They are often prescribed when a patient has an infection or when a medical professional believes that an infection is coming.

Some of the more common minor illnesses that are treated using antibiotics include upper respiratory conditions, when someone has a large cut or open wound, for strep throat and for treating earaches.

Urgent Care Centers Often Prescribe Unnecessary Antibiotics

By Lisa Rapaport, Reuters Health

– Patients with common colds and respiratory illnesses may be more likely to get antibiotics – which dont work for these conditions – when they go to an urgent care clinic, a U.S. study suggests.

Overall, 39 percent of visits to urgent care centers resulted in antibiotic prescriptions, the study found. When patients went to urgent care for conditions like the flu and bronchitis that cant be fixed with antibiotics, 46 percent of them still got antibiotic prescriptions.

Taking an antibiotic when it is not needed provides no benefit and could be harmful, said senior study author Dr. Katherine Fleming-Dutra, deputy director of the Office of Antibiotic Stewardship at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Among other things, needless use of antibiotics can increase patients risk of getting antibiotic-resistant infections, or superbugs that are harder to treat, Fleming-Dutra said by email. Other risks include allergic reactions, diarrhea, and the potential for harmful bacteria to flourish in the gut and cause infections in the future.

Antibiotics are life-saving medicines that treat infections caused by bacteria, Fleming-Dutra added. When a patient needs antibiotics, the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects or antibiotic resistance.

Patient And Provider Relationships

The relationship that nurses, doctors, and other healthcare providers build with their patients is one of the most important predictors of antibiotic use.

Clear communication

Patients and healthcare providers who trust each other and have a good relationship generally have better communication on health issues. Patients who ask questions and listen to options take antibiotics less often. Similarly, providers who know their patient, listen to their patient, and are able to explain a course of action in an understandable way are less likely to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics.Footnote 28, Footnote 29, Footnote 30, Footnote 31

Misunderstandings can lead to unnecessary antibiotic use.Footnote 32, Footnote 33, Footnote 34, Footnote 35 Healthcare providers sometimes think that their patients expect an antibiotic prescription, when in reality they seek advice and reassurance.Footnote 36

For example, parents of young children might want to make sure their child’s illness isn’t serious or want advice on how to help their child feel better, instead of specifically seeking antibiotics. At times, providers may also prescribe an antibiotic to maintain positive relationships with their patients or believe that a patient’s satisfaction is associated with leaving the medical visit with a prescription.Footnote 37, Footnote 28, Footnote 39

Treating It As An Emergency Room

Heres how to know when to go to urgent care vs. the ER: if its not an emergency situation, such as a stroke or heart attack, severe bleeding, vision changes, or difficulty breathing, urgent care is your best option. However, if you do need instant care for a life-threatening condition, dont go to urgent careyou need to book it to the ER.

You dont want to go to the wrong place, as this will delay treatment and could be hazardous. If you do go to the ER for an urgent care problem, youll also deal with the financial costs.

Some urgent care clinics are actually emergency rooms in disguise, where the center is attached to a hospital, for instance. In this case, you could be billed for an ER visitwhich will be expensiveas opposed to urgent care, which is really what you were looking for. Be sure to inquire about urgent care payment options and whether or not the visit will be billed under emergency room or urgent care.

Not All Medications Are Prescribed At All Facilities

It’s important to note that not all urgent care facilities offer the same services and medications. Because of this, you may find that some medications will not be prescribed at some facilities. In general, if an urgent care facility will not prescribe a medication, it will be narcotics. This is to help cut back on the abuse of drugs.
