In yesterdays post analyzing the Food and Drug Administrations report on sales of antibiotics for use on farms in 2014, I noted that almost 99 percent of the antibiotics sold for agricultural use are sold over the counter, that is, without a prescription.
The FDA is attempting to change this, via an updated rule called the Veterinary Feed Directive once that rule is finalized, livestock producers should only be able to obtain antibiotics once they have an order from a veterinarian. The goal here is to build more accountability into antibiotics purchase and use, because any misuse creates the possibility of resistance and there is more use of antibiotics in agriculture, by sheer volume, than in human medicine.
As often happens when I talk about this, I ran into some disbelief: people protesting that, come on, surely you cant just walk into a store and buy antibiotics, can you?

MONDAY, July 22, 2019 — No one would argue that antibiotics are an amazing 20th-century innovation, promising a quick cure for bacterial illnesses that might otherwise cause serious harm or death.
But they are not without risk, especially when taken without a doctor’s supervision.
Yet a new study review suggests that’s exactly what many Americans are doing: misusing “under-the-counter” or old leftover antibiotics to self-medicate without seeing a doctor or getting a prescription.
“There are clearly all kinds of ways people can get antibiotics without seeing a doctor,” noted study lead author Dr. Larissa Grigoryan. She’s an assistant professor of family medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Some patients store leftovers from prior valid prescriptions. Others obtain them from family or friends. Still others source them online, or at flea markets, health food stores, and even pet shops.
“And for all kinds of reasons it can be very tempting for people to get them one of those ways, rather than see a physician,” Grigoryan said.
After reviewing 31 prior studies conducted between 2000 and early 2019, Grigoryan and her colleagues concluded that there is no one explanation or pattern driving antibiotic misuse.
“But the main message for anyone who does so is the same for everyone,” Grigoryan said. “Taking antibiotics without a current doctor’s prescription and supervision is unsafe.”

In its effort to temper the sky-high prices Americans pay for many vital medications, the Trump administration last month unveiled a plan that would legalize the importation of selected prescription drugs from countries where they sell for far less. But the plan addresses imports only at the wholesale level it is silent about the transactions by millions of Americans who already buy their medications outside the United States.
Americans routinely skirt federal law by crossing into Canada and Mexico or tapping online pharmacies abroad to buy prescription medications at a fraction of the price they would pay at home.
In some cases, they do it out of desperation. Its the only way they can afford the drugs they need to stay healthy or alive. And they do it despite warnings from the Food and Drug Administration, echoed by the pharmaceutical industry, about the risk of contaminated or counterfeit products.
The reality is that literally millions of people get their medications this way each year, and they are either saving a lot of money or they are getting a drug they wouldnt have been able to get because prices are too high here, says Gabriel Levitt, president of PharmacyChecker.com, an online company that allows people to compare prescription drug prices among international and U.S. pharmacies.

They say that you need a prescription for drugs now in Mexico…but my experience this past winter when I got very sick…I could buy any meds that I needed…but WOW…the prices were soooo high. A 3 pack of penicillin was running $25 to $30USD…used to get a big aspirin sized bottle before for a couple of bucks! Don’t pay that much for it here in the states without any insurance!! Bring along anything you might need…it will be cheaper!
