Treatment For Mastitis In Dogs
Treatment for mastitis in dogs often depends on the type and severity of the condition.
Galactostasis treatment usually involves withholding water for six to ten hours and withholding food for 24 hours. You may need to limit feeding after that for a period of about three days. A vet may also prescribe a diuretic.
Treatment for acute septic mastitis will likely include antibiotics. This may mean that any puppies will not be allowed to nurse from the affected teat and may need to be given supplementary nutrition.
The vet might also recommend applying a warm compress the affected area, and the gland may be milked to keep the ducts clear and reduce pain. A cabbage wrap may reduce swelling and promote faster healing.
In severe cases, a vet may drain or surgically lance the glands or completely remove them. Surgical removal is the usual course of action if the gland is abscessed or gangrenous.
If theres an underlying cause, such as mammary cancer, the vet will discuss other courses of action for treatment.

A Dermal Piercing Complicated By Mycobacterium Fortuitum
Trisha PatelAcademic Editor: Received
Background. Dermal piercings have recently become a fashion symbol. Common complications include hypertrophic scarring, rejection, local infection, contact allergy, and traumatic tearing. We report a rare case of Mycobacterium fortuitum following a dermal piercing and discuss its medical implications and treatments. Case. A previously healthy 19-year-old woman presented complaining of erythema and edema at the site of a dermal piercing on the right fourth dorsal finger. She was treated with a 10-day course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and one course of cephalexin by her primary care physician with incomplete resolution. The patient stated that she had been swimming at a local water park daily. A punch biopsy around the dermal stud was performed, and cultures with sensitivities revealed Mycobacterium fortuitum. The patient was treated with clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin for two months receiving full resolution. Discussion. Mycobacterium fortuitum is an infrequent human pathogen. This organism is a Runyon group IV, rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria, often found in water, soil, and dust. Treatment options vary due to the size of the lesion. Small lesions are typically excised, while larger lesions require treatment for 26 months with antibiotics. We recommend a high level of suspicion for atypical mycobacterial infections in a piercing resistant to other therapies.

Does A Bump On Nipple Piercing Mean It’s Infected
Not necessarily. A bump isn’t usually a red flag for infection, but that all depends on how it looks and feels. If you do see a bump, it’s best to call your doctor to check it out because it could be one of many things, including a granuloma, pustule, keloid, or hypertrophic scar all of which will likely be mistreated if you self-diagnose.
How Is Mastitis Managed Or Treated
Your healthcare provider may prescribe an oral antibiotic to treat mastitis. The infection should clear up within 10 days but may last as long as three weeks. Mastitis sometimes goes away without medical treatment.
To reduce pain and inflammation, you can:
- Apply warm, moist compresses to the affected breast every few hours or take a warm shower.
- Breastfeed every two hours or more often to keep milk flowing through the milk ducts. If needed, use a breast pump to express milk between feedings.
- Drink plenty of fluids and rest when possible.
- Massage the area using a gentle circular motion starting at the outside of the affected area and working in toward the nipple.
- Take over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs .
- Wear a supportive bra that doesnt compress the breast.

An infection anywhere on your body, especially close to the operative site is a reason to postpone surgery until fully healed. I agree 100% with Dr. Garcia that you should remove the piercing as a starting point but you should speak with your board-certified plastic surgeon to keep them aware of your infection and decide how best to treat it.I hope this helps.Dr. Michael C. Answer: Breast Augmentation And Infection
I would begin by removing the piercing if you already haven’t. I would likely also start antibiotics and delay your surgery until we are certain that everything has healed. It is always best to avoid elective surgery, especially one that involves placement of implants, until we are certain that the infection has cleared. I certain cases I would also perhaps recommend using the IMF incision to stay away from that area.Good luck.
How To Care For Your Nipple Piercing
While itâs healing, keep your pierced nipple clean to prevent infection:
- Wash your hands with antimicrobial soap and warm water before you touch or wash your nipple.
- If you see any crusty stuff around your nipple ring, gently rinse it off with warm water.
- After you wash your nipple, pat it dry with a clean paper towel.
- You can also soak your nipple in a saltwater solution made of a half-teaspoon of sea salt and warm water. You can let it air dry or pat it dry.
- Try not to let your nipple ring snag on your clothes, towels, or sheets. This could tear your skin and lead to an infection.
- You can wear a padded bra, thick sports bra, or cotton T-shirt to protect your newly pierced nipple.

How Painful Is The Procedure
Like any surgical procedure, there is pain involved. Most patients comment that they have a mild to moderate amount of pain. Most of the pain seen with breast lifts/mastopexy is due to the bruising and the swelling involved. In fact, most complain more about the soreness and aching sensation than actual pain. To help with the pain, we regularly give patients oral and intravenous pain medicines in the post-operative period. Upon their discharge from the hospital, we supplement this with oral pain medication. It must be noted here that at the time of the surgery, the incisions are infiltrated with local anesthetic medication that lasts six hours, in an effort to help with post-operative pain.
How Do I Know My Piercing Is Infected
It is normal to experience some level of pain immediately after the procedure. However, the pain should reduce after a couple of days. If it lasts longer than a few days, it is likely to develop a complication or infection. This is where you need to take the right mitigation measures to help the infection heal and go away.
It is normal to experience some kind of inflammation and soreness. The nipple will be red and painful to touch up to a few hours after the piercing procedure. Although a little itching may also be experienced, it should not be severe or too much. Just avoid scratching or touching it to avoid an infection.
However, if there is persistent pain, soreness, and inflammation, that is how you know your nipple piercing is getting infected. There may be more signs to look out for.

Can I Combine This Procedure With Any Other Procedure
Yes and no. Like any surgical procedure, there are limits to what can be done and what is safe. As for the yes, it can be combined with some other procedures. For example, I routinely do this procedure with a breast augmentation. I feel that this allows the breast contour to be maximized. Let me explain. Once a nipple has been lifted, it tends to sit on a hollowed area, even though it is more in the right position. Patients often complain of having poor upper pole fullness. By using an implant, the breast tissue pocket is maximized, the breast is fuller and perkier and then the new nipple positioning is ideal.
Besides an augmentation, other procedures are routinely done along with breast lifts. Any procedure that may be too long or too arduous and place the patient at risk for significant bleeding or significant anesthetic exposure would have to be deferred and done in two stages. Please understand I say this without knowing exactly what you, the patient, may have in mind. I can only speak from my experience.
Mastitis And Breast Abscess
Patients with acute mastitis and abscess often represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. There is currently no consensus on optimal management strategies. The principles that guide successful diagnosis, evaluation, and management are discussed presently.
Patients with acute breast infection typically present with one or more of the following symptoms: skin erythema, palpable mass, tenderness, fever, and/or pain.13 Breast abscesses may occur in both the lactational and nonlactational setting.48 Breast abscesses have been most commonly reported to occur in women between 20 and 50 years of age.4,5,7,9 However, breast infections have also been reported in men,9 postmenopausal women,10 and children.11 Postmenopausal patients with breast abscess often have a more indolent presentation and may lack many of the classical findings for breast abscess.10 Abscesses may occur either centrally or peripherally in the breast. Many authors have reported that a subareolar abscess is more common in nonlactating women,1,4,7 and lactational abscesses are more common in the upper outer quadrant.5,12 Conversely, two groups have reported that abscesses in nonlactating women occur in the periphery of the breast.5,13

Wash The Infected Area With Antimicrobial Soap And Water
Very often, infections in pierced nipples are caused by microbes such as bacteria, viruses, and other microscopic parasites. They enter our pierced nipples via contact with unclean objects or skin.
Antimicrobial soaps eliminate the microbes responsible for nipple infections and thus prevent the occurrence of major diseases like TB, E-Coli, etcetera.
Try to use soaps that dont have an added fragrance like rose, lavender, etcetera as theyll be more effective in eradicating microbes and ward off nipple piercing infection.

Sore Nipples Caused By Baby Not Attaching Properly
The most common reason for sore nipples or damaged nipples is your baby not attaching properly to your breast.
You can expect some tenderness in the first few days or weeks of breastfeeding when your baby first latches to the breast, but this should settle as the milk flows. Breastfeeding shouldnt be painful.
If youre in pain from sore nipples, you could:
- seek help from a child and family health nurse, midwife, ABA breastfeeding counsellor or lactation consultant
- try a different attachment method.
Checking your attachment is a good first step for the problem of sore nipples. Our article on breastfeeding attachment techniques explains 2 methods baby-led attachment and mother-led attachment. You might also like to look at our illustrated guide to breastfeeding techniques.
Diagnosing An Infected Nipple Piercing
Your ability to self-diagnose typically depends on your symptoms. Some signs of an infection may be so obvious that its easy to recognize that your nipple piercing is infected. Pus drainage, for example, is a clear sign of an infection.
If youre unsure about your symptoms or whether they indicate irritation or infection, you should consult your doctor. Waiting too long for a diagnosis and treatment can prolong the infection. This can greatly increase your risk for serious complications.

Deterrence And Patient Education
Patients need to be counseled on the risks of associated infection when undergoing body piercings. Importance should be placed on infection prevention and the need for utilization of a trusted and certified piercing parlor as these locations have requirements for proper hygiene and sterilization techniques.
Enhancing Healthcare Team Outcomes
Culture and gram stain of purulent drainage of skin infections can help aid in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, but this is not a requirement . Alternatively, it is not recommended to perform a swab, biopsy, or blood culture from a cellulitis infection . For abscesses, incision and drainage is the recommended treatment . For infections involved with penetrating trauma, as could be the case with a recent body piercing, treatment with antimicrobials directed against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species are recommended . Recommended treatment duration is five days, but therapy extension is advisable if not improved during that treatment period .

Pearls And Other Issues
Rare reports exist of other infections including but are not limited to hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and tetanus. Complications of local infections can have grave implications with reports of toxic shock syndrome due to Staphylococcus aureus and associated ear piercing, endocarditis from nasal a nasal piercing, Ludwig angina from an oral piercing, and abscess formation compromising a breast implant after a nipple piercing, all have documented case reports. For these reasons, it is necessary to identify and treat the localized infections to prevent severe and life-threatening complications.
