BLACK PR WIRE Publix Pharmacy has added another free prescription drug to its growing list, this one to treat high blood pressure.
The pharmacy will offer free 30-day supplies up to 60 tablets of 2.5 mg and 5 mg or up to 30 tablets of 10 mg of amlodipine to customers with a prescription for the medication. Amlodipine combination products are excluded.
Amlodipine is a calcium-channel blocker and is commonly used to treat high blood pressure and angina .

Publix Offers Free Generic Antibiotics

LAKELAND, Fla. Publix Super Markets is now offering a selection of free generic antibiotics.
Starting last week, all of the retailer’s 684 pharmacies began participating in the program in five states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
New or current customers can fill a valid prescription of seven generic oral antibiotics at no cost. Each prescription is limited to a 14-day supply however, Publix is not limiting the number of prescriptions customers may fill for free.
The medications were chosen based on past customer use, Publix spokesman Dwaine Stevens told SN. These drugs are 50% of the generic prescriptions filled at Publix in the area of pediatrics. They are commonly used antibiotics so they represent the best benefit for our customers.
The plan is similar to one launched by Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich., in October 2006, just over a month after Wal-Mart Stores announced its plan to offer select generic prescription drugs at $4 for a 30-day supply. The drugs chosen by Publix are the same as those offered for free at Meijer: Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, and Ampicillin and Erythromycin.
Although Meijer, which operates in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, is seen to have been at least partially reacting to Wal-Mart’s initiative, Publix has acted almost a year later.
There Are Similar Medication Programs Still Offered At Other Stores
If you relied on Publix for your free prescription medication, you might benefit from checking your options at other stores. LAKELAND, Fla., Jan. 2, 2020 Publix Pharmacy recently filled its 100 millionth free prescription as part of its free medication program.
We are proud to provide a service that helps our customers afford their medications, said Publix Vice President of Pharmacy Dain Rusk. The Company Offered Various Generic Medications At No Cost Under This Program
With this soon-to-be-eliminated program, Publix distributed several different generic prescription medications to customers for free. This included 14-day supplies of generic antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, SMZ-TMP, and penicillin, as well as 90-day supplies of generic hypertension and diabetes medications such as amlodipine, metformin, and lisinopril, according to Supermarket News.
Shoppers only needed to provide pharmacists with a prescription for medications covered by the program to get them at no cost. And per Supermarket News, there was no limit on the number of free prescriptions and that they were provided at no charge, regardless of what a customer’s insurance coverage was.
“We are proud to provide a service that helps our customers afford their medications. As the cost of health care continues to rise, this program has become even more important to our customers and our communities,” Dain Rusk, vice president of pharmacy at Publix, said in a statement in 2020, after the company had filled its 100 million prescription under the program.

Publix To Offer 7 Popular Prescription Antibiotics For Free
CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Seven popular antibiotics will be available free from Publix supermarkets for people with prescriptions, even if they have a health insurance provider that would pay for them, the company and Gov. Charlie Crist said Monday.
Fourteen-day supplies of the seven drugs, among the most commonly prescribed, will be available at all 684 of the chain’s pharmacies in five states. Publix said it is not limiting the number of prescriptions that customers may fill for free.
The prescription antibiotics available under the program are amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, penicillin VK, ampicillin and erythromycin.
Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, secretary of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration and a pediatrician, said many of the antibiotics are prescribed for children, and he noted that Florida has 3.6 million uninsured people and many who have some insurance but no coverage for prescription drugs.
“So I hope are ready,” Agwunobi said, predicting a heavy response.
The company joins other retailers that offer discounted drug programs, including Target tgt and Wal-Mart Stores wmt, but Publix Super Markets officials say the company is the first large regional chain to offer certain drugs at no cost.
Wal-Mart Stores is selling a number of generic prescription drugs for $4 in hopes that it can draw more shoppers into its stores who may come for prescriptions and then stay to buy in other departments.

Many of the free meds help treat people with infections to high blood pressure.
Publix no longer plans to give away Amoxicillin, Lisinopril, Metformin, and Amlodipine. The discovery caught customers like Sheri Nodingham of Cape Coral by surprise.
Her doctor prescribed Lisinopril for her high blood pressure and she said the news that it would no longer be free was not good for her since she relies on it every month.

Publix Is Ending Its Free Prescription Medication Program Soon
Publix recently confirmed that it will end its free prescription medication program on June 1, West Orlando News reported. This means that customers will no longer be able to get certain prescription medications filled for no cost at the grocer’s pharmacies. And this might be a hit to many shoppers, as the program has been around for 15 years.
“Publix debuted our free prescription program in 2007, and to date we have dispensed well over 100 million free prescriptions. We consistently evaluate our programs and services to ensure they are meeting the intended purpose and evolve over time,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement to News 6 in Orlando, Florida.
These Medications Will Still Be Available To Buy At Publix Pharmacies After June
Publix isn’t removing these medications from its pharmacies altogether. Instead, antibiotics like amoxicillin will be available for customers to buy at $7.50 for a 14-day supply and maintenance medications for diabetes and high blood pressure will be available at $7.50 for a 90-day supply, according to News 6.
“While we are no longer offering medications for free, many will still be available at Publix Pharmacy at little to no out-of-pocket cost with most insurance plans,” the company said on a flier it is distributing to customers, per West Orlando News. The news outlet added that Publix is encouraging its customers to ask their local pharmacists any questions about the program ending and how it will affect their medication costs.

Publix has been administering COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters during the pandemic.
Publix Pharmacy administers the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines, including third doses and boosters, subject to eligibility, its website said. This includes the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 – 11.
Publix pharmacies also administers a third primary series COVID-19 vaccine dose for certain immunocompromised children ages 5-11 per the Center for Disease Control’s recommendation.
Currently, second boosters are only recommended for those with compromised immune systems, but last week the Biden Administration was considering authorizing a second COVID-19 booster for adults 65 and older as cases of the Omicron subvariant BA.2 spread, various media reports said.

The Southern supermarket chain Publix announced today that it will be offering seven common prescription antibiotics for free in its stores, located in Flora, George, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. The move was reported in an AP story and in the Palm Beach Post.
The move follows on the heels of similar moves by other retailers, to offer selected generic drugs at low cost. Last year, for instance, Wal-Mart annoucned that it would offer a list of certain generic drugs at $4 per prescription.
What’s wrong with offering consumers free drugs? After all, many people, particularly people without insurance, have a hard time paying for prescription drugs. So free drugs will help them, won’t they?
It is true that free or discounted prescriptions can help patients, particularly the uninsured and low-income. But there is something peculiar and potentially disturbing about Publix’s move: The selection of antibiotics as the drugs to be offered for free.
Antibiotics are typically used for short periods of time to treat acute infections. Unfortunately, antibiotics are also massively overprescribed, which leads to the increase in infections which are resistant to common antibiotics.
