The Southern supermarket chain Publix announced today that it will be offering seven common prescription antibiotics for free in its stores, located in Flora, George, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. The move was reported in an AP story and in the Palm Beach Post.

The move follows on the heels of similar moves by other retailers, to offer selected generic drugs at low cost. Last year, for instance, Wal-Mart annoucned that it would offer a list of certain generic drugs at $4 per prescription.

What’s wrong with offering consumers free drugs? After all, many people, particularly people without insurance, have a hard time paying for prescription drugs. So free drugs will help them, won’t they?

It is true that free or discounted prescriptions can help patients, particularly the uninsured and low-income. But there is something peculiar and potentially disturbing about Publix’s move: The selection of antibiotics as the drugs to be offered for free.

Antibiotics are typically used for short periods of time to treat acute infections. Unfortunately, antibiotics are also massively overprescribed, which leads to the increase in infections which are resistant to common antibiotics. The Palm Beach Post raised this concern in its article on the announcement:

One option for people without insurance is a Patient Assistance Program that offers steeply discounted generic drugs — www.Rxoutreach.org

Is Walmart A Good Pharmacy

For starters, Walmart had some good company at the bottom of the list where it is within five points of CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Giant Eagle, so clearly there is a correlation between the volume of prescriptions filled and where a company was ranked. For example, Walmarts scored 78 out of a possible 100.

Publix Meds List: Is It Cheaper Than Using Goodrx Coupons

For this article, I researched the medications available on Publixs meds list and used the GoodRx prescription savings app to see if other pharmacies near my home in Florida offered an even lower price.

Here are the key findings:

  • In most cases, Publix had the lowest price for the generic drugs that are part of its program.
  • The runner-up was usually Walmart or Winn-Dixie Pharmacy, another regional grocery store chain.
  • GoodRx sometimes showed a higher price for Publix than what you would pay using Publixs free and low-cost medication program.

My price comparison below includes all of the medications on Publixs meds list when I collected the data in December 2019. In many cases, multiple dosages are eligible for the cheap price. However, I had to select only one dose to compare the Publix price with GoodRx.

To make it easier for you to find the medication that youre looking for, Ive sorted the prescription drugs by type. You can use the quick links below to advance to a specific type of medication.

Why Do Pharmacies Offer Drugs For Free Whats In It For Them

The goal of any business is to make its owners money and pharmacies are no different. Pharmacies that offer free drug programs are able to give away these medications for free because you will more than likely fill the rest of your medications at the same pharmacy as a matter of convenience.

Only the most frugal, savvy shoppers are willing to make several different stops to get the lowest prices on all of their medications. And these companies use this to their advantage. They offer super-cheap generic medications for free, take the miniscule loss, and profit from the many other prescriptions you fill with them or other items you buy.

Since all of the pharmacies that offer free medications programs are also grocery stores you are also more likely to buy other high margin merchandise there such as OTC medications, shampoo, diapers, baby products, candy bars, housewares, etc

With all that said, make sure you are keeping money in your pocket and being a smart medication shopper. Take advantage of these free medication programs when it is advantageous to you.

SUMMARY: Publix offers a 90-day supply of two dozen prescription drugs for just $7.50, which works to $2.50 a month. Publix To Offer Free Antibiotics

Publix has decided to start giving away seven commonly prescribed antibiotics for free in five states including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. The oral antibiotics will be available at no cost to any customers with a prescription as often as they need it. Publix will offer 14-day supplies of the seven drugs at all of the company’s pharmacies. The supermarket chain operates 684 pharmacies in five states. Publix CEO Charlie Jenkins, Junior says he hopes the decision to offer the free prescriptions will build the company’s pharmacy business and help people too. Other retailers that offer discounted drug programs include K-Mart and Wal-Mart. But Publix says it’s the first large regional chain to offer certain drugs at no cost.

Here’s the list of the oral antibiotics included at 684 Publix Pharmacies:

Along with milk, bread and meat, you can now pick up a few free antibiotics at your neighborhood Publix store.

The Lakeland grocer Monday launched a drug program that allows customers to obtain up to a 14-day supply of seven common, generic oral antibiotics. Publix is not limiting the number of free prescriptions per customer.

The program ratchets up the generic-drug price war triggered last year by discount goliath Wal-Mart. The mass retailer slashed prices on 291 generic drugs to $4 for a 30-day supply. Refusing to be left behind, Target followed with a similar program. In October, Michigan grocer Meijer announced it’s doling out eight generic antibiotics for free.

“Supermarkets were more aggressive initially in responding to Wal-Mart type of programs than the drugstores,” said Dan Alaimo, editor of nonfood strategies at the trade magazine Supermarket News.

Publix declined to elaborate on how much the new program would cost the grocer. The average retail price on the listed drugs could be anywhere from $10 to $60. It’s not known if the company will eventually raise the cost of other products to make up for the difference.

Still, Publix’s announcement marries well with the soaring popularity of generic drugs. Profit margins on name-brand drugs are in constant decline, according to a 2006 study by Mark S. Gottlieb, a New York accounting and consulting firm.

“The main thing is to get people into the stores,” Alaimo said.

Alaimo believes Publix’s deal is smart marketing.

You too can potentially save considerable money on your medications by shopping around using prescription discount cards like Singlecare, check out Healthwarehouse or Blink Health, or utilize the many discounted medication programs that the varying pharmacies offer which is discussed in a separate article.

Supermarket To Offer Free Antibiotics

Publix supermarket chain said Monday it will make seven common prescription antibiotics available for free, joining other major retailers in trying to lure customers to their stores with cheap medications.

The oral antibiotics, the most commonly filled at the chain’s pharmacies, will be available at no cost to anyone with a prescription as often as they need them, Publix Chief Executive Charlie Jenkins Jr. said. Fourteen-day supplies of the seven drugs will be available at all 684 of the chain’s pharmacies in five Southern states.

The prescription antibiotics available under the program are amoxicillin, cephalexin, penicillin VK, erythromycin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and ciprofoxacin.

Gov. Charlie Crist went to a suburban Fort Myers store to help the company make the announcement and to praise the Lakeland-based employee-owned company, one of the dominant retailers in the region.

“It can’t be any more affordable than free,” Crist said.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Kmart and other retailers already offer discounted drug programs. But Publix Super Markets Inc. officials say the company is the first large regional chain to offer certain drugs at no cost. In addition to Florida, the company operates stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

With health care costs one of the biggest challenges facing many Americans, Crist said that the private sector’s involvement in the solution was “a great trend.”

Publix Beats Walmart And Target With Discount Generic Rx List

For several years now, Publix has offered antibiotics and select other medications absolutely free of charge at its pharmacies. These include:

  • Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim

In addition to the free antibiotics, adults with diabetes or high blood pressure can also get a free 90-day supply of Lisinopril or amlodipine with a prescription.

But the regional grocery player has another for pharmacy customers that youll want to take note of.

You probably already know that a lot of other retailers have offers of a 30-day supply of select generics for $4 or a 90-day supply for $10. Well, Publix has lowered that price to only $7.50 for a 90-day supply.

Thats just $2.50 for a 30-day supply!

And while the list of generics being offered is smaller at Publix than at a Walmart or Target, if your medication is on the Publix list and the store is located near you, why not take advantage of the savings?

Publix Offers Free Generic Antibiotics

Wendy Toth 1 | Aug 13, 2007

LAKELAND, Fla. Publix Super Markets is now offering a selection of free generic antibiotics.

Starting last week, all of the retailer’s 684 pharmacies began participating in the program in five states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

New or current customers can fill a valid prescription of seven generic oral antibiotics at no cost. Each prescription is limited to a 14-day supply however, Publix is not limiting the number of prescriptions customers may fill for free.

The medications were chosen based on past customer use, Publix spokesman Dwaine Stevens told SN. These drugs are 50% of the generic prescriptions filled at Publix in the area of pediatrics. They are commonly used antibiotics so they represent the best benefit for our customers.

The plan is similar to one launched by Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich., in October 2006, just over a month after Wal-Mart Stores announced its plan to offer select generic prescription drugs at $4 for a 30-day supply. The drugs chosen by Publix are the same as those offered for free at Meijer: Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim, Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, and Ampicillin and Erythromycin.

Although Meijer, which operates in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, is seen to have been at least partially reacting to Wal-Mart’s initiative, Publix has acted almost a year later.

If you need more antibiotics after 14 days, all you have to do is ask your doctor to send in another prescription and you’ll get that one free, too.

Here’s a list of the medications that qualify:

  • Amlodipine and Lisinopril
  • Metformin

Publix Adds Blood Pressure Drug To Its List Of Free Prescriptions

Sometimes, convenience is the best medicine.

LAKELAND | Publix Pharmacy has added another blood-pressure drug to the growing list of prescription medications it provides free of charge. The drug is amlodipine, a calcium-channel blocker drug used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain.

On Thursday, it began offering free 30-day supplies of amlodipine to patrons with a prescription. That’s up to 60 tablets of 2.5 mg and 5 mg or up to 30 tablets of 10 mg.

Amlodipine combination products are excluded.

Publix Pharmacy will continue supplying refills or renewed prescriptions of the drug free, as it has been doing with 30-day supplies of lisinopril and metformin, said Maria Brous, Publix’s director of media relations.

It also gives a free 14-day supply of these generic oral antibiotics: amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin VK, sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin .

Fourteen days is the standard prescription length for antibiotics, but the free offer continues if the drug is needed longer, she said.

In deciding which drugs to offer free, Publix reviews what drugs its patients are getting at the pharmacy and what the impact on customers’ health could be if a drug were more available, Brous said.

Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, is prescribed for patients with high blood pressure, some heart conditions, diabetes and some chronic kidney conditions. Lisinopril-HCTZ combination products aren’t included in the free offer.
