Whats Next For Prevention And Treatment Of Genital Herpes
Researchers are working on new treatments for genital herpes and strategies to prevent transmission.
Microbiocides, which are antimicrobial chemicals that can be applied to the vagina, offer one possible approach to protecting uninfected women. These substances block infection by destroying bacteria or viruses before they enter the body.
Two microbiocide products show some promise for preventing the spread of herpes:
- Tenofovir gel, a topical formulation of a drug currently used to treat HIV, reduced new HSV-2 infections in women in a study in South Africa.
- Zinc oxide tetrapod nanoparticles, applied to the vagina, have been shown in mouse studies to prevent against infection with HSV-2.
Researchers are also working on treatments that stop the herpes viruses from making copies of themselves.
As for a vaccine, researchers have come up with some experimental ones to prevent infection with HSV-2, but so far, these vaccines do not look very promising.

The three main treatments for herpes acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir are all FDA approved, though there are side effects and interactions to be aware of.
Common side effects of these antiviral medications include headaches and nausea. Famciclovir can cause dizziness or sleepiness, and confusion is predominantly seen in elderly patients.
Acyclovir and valacyclovir, which are very similar to each other, can cause your kidneys to stop working. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose. ye it usually can it depends on if its progressed into pelvic inflammatory disease or not usually when u have an std it will effect the cervix or anus and from there it moves upwards to other organs within the pelvis it can be quite painful during sex and when walking u can have stds and have no symptoms at all i dont think u have syphilis it could not even be an std the discharge could be an infection in the bowel or anus produced by your own bacteria and not related to an std have u had further tests i think u mentioned swabs on another post

Genital Herpes Is Spread By Skin
The herpes virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact and can be transmitted during vaginal, oral or anal sex. The infection can occur anywhere on the genitals, in areas around the groin or pubic area, and in or around the anus. Cold sores on the mouth can cause genital infection during oral sex for those who do not already have the cold sore virus.
The virus can be spread when someone with HSV has an episode or an outbreak characterised by having a sore, blister, ulcer or skin split . It can also be spread between episodes, when there is no sore, blister, ulcer or skin split present called asymptomatic viral shedding.
During viral shedding the virus is on the skin surface and can be spread through genital skin-to-skin contact, or from the mouth or face to genital skin during contact.

Can Gene Editing Cure Herpes
Herpes researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have used a gene-editing technique to attack the DNA of the herpes simplex virus in infected mice. This new research is a key step toward a cure for herpes, an often stigmatized virus that infects one in six people in the United States alone.
The study, published today in the journal JCI Insight, âlays out the pathway toward a potential cure for human herpesvirus infections,â said Dr. Keith Jerome, a Fred Hutch and University of Washington virologist and the paperâs senior author.
Researchers in Jeromeâs lab deployed DNA-cutting enzymes called targeted endonucleases to damage the herpesvirus genome, inducing mutations that destroy the virusâ ability to replicate. The study is the first in a living organism â rather than a lab dish â to show that gene-editing tools can be delivered to the herpes simplex virus in its latent state or to a latent viral infection of any kind. Doing so is key to curing herpes because a latent infection can reactivate and seed new outbreaks.
âWe can take these targeted endonucleases, we can introduce them into a mouse that has a latent herpes infection, we can get them to where the virus lies dormant and we can successfully attack that virus in its dormant state,â Jerome said. âThe process can work.â
âBut weâre certainly thinking about that,â he said. âThat is the goal.â

What is it?
Pubic lice are also known as “crabs” because the lice resemble tiny crabs. They’re usually found around the genitals in the pubic hair. You can get pubic lice from having close contact with someone who has it. Lice can be clear to darker brown in colour. They live by feeding on human blood and lay their eggs at the base of the pubic hair. Their eggs are called nits and can stay alive for up to 10 days.
Scabies are tiny bugs or mites that burrow below the surface of the skin and lay eggs. They’re not visible to the naked eye.
How do you get it?
Pubic lice and scabies are passed on from one person to another through sexual and non-sexual contact. An example of non-sexual contact is sharing towels or sheets with a person who has pubic lice or scabies. Pubic lice and scabies can live on objects such as clothing, towels, bedding and mattresses for 1 to 2 days if they fall off their host.
How can you tell if you have it?
If you have pubic lice or scabies, you will feel itchy and may have a rash. For pubic lice, you might see tiny light brown insects or oval, whitish eggs on the hair. Bites can cause a rash or small bluish spots on your skin. For scabies, itching occurs mainly at night and a rash may appear between your fingers, on your wrists, abdomen, ankles, on the bend of your elbows or around your genitals.

Treating A First Outbreak Of Herpes
A first outbreak of genital herpes can cause a long illness with severe genital sores and can also affect the nervous system. Even if your first episode of herpes is mild, you may have severe or prolonged symptoms later. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone who has a first episode of genital herpes take antiviral drugs.
Almost everyone who has one episode of genital herpes caused by HSV-2 also has later breakouts of sores. Later episodes are less common if your case of genital herpes is due to an HSV-1 infection.
The frequency of genital herpes outbreaks slows down over time in many people.

When Is Treatment Necessary
There is no cure for herpes, but people should seek professional advice if they think they may have it. Anyone who has had oral, anal, or vaginal sex with someone who has herpes without using a barrier method of protection, such as a condom should contact a doctor. This is also a good idea if any herpes symptoms arise.
Herpes can cause blisters to form on or around the mouth or genitals. These blisters then break, forming open, painful sores that may take at least 1 week to heal.
The symptoms may clear up on their own, and they may reappear later, in what some people call outbreaks or flare ups.

A Cure For Herpes There Is Progress To Report
It takes a persistent scientist to stop a persistent virus.
A decade ago, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center virologist Dr. Keith Jerome began exploring the idea that lifelong infections with herpes viruses might be cured by using the DNA-cutting tools of gene therapy.
Initial research showed these techniques could knock out small quantities of latent virus, and the work of improving the results fell to Jeromeâs senior staff scientist, Dr. Martine Aubert. Five years ago, the team reported they had damaged the genes of 2%-4% of herpes virus in infected mice. Aubertâs work was an important proof of principle, but far short of a cure.
Nevertheless, she persisted.
On Aug. 18, the team led by Jerome and Aubert published a paper in Nature Communications showing that, through a series of incremental improvements on their original method, they had destroyed up to 95% of herpes virus lurking in certain nerve clusters of mice.
âThis is the first time that anybody has been able to go in and actually eliminate most of herpes in a body,â said Jerome, who is also spearheading research at Fred Hutch and the University of Washington on COVID-19. âIt is a completely different approach to herpes therapy than anybodyâs ever had before.â
What Is Suppressive Treatment For Genital Herpes
Suppressive treatment involves taking medication on a daily basis to reduce the chance of a genital herpes outbreak.
Taking antiviral medicines on a daily basis also reduces the amount of virus that is shed, both when sores are present and in between outbreaks, when the skin looks normal.
Suppressive treatment does not guarantee that you will not get a herpes outbreak, but should reduce the severity and frequency of herpes outbreaks.
Over time, your immune system tends to exert better control over the herpes virus, so your doctor may suggest stopping treatment every 6 months to see whether you have any further outbreaks. Treatment can be re-started if you do have a recurrence.

Genital Herpes And Pregnancy
Its really important to speak to a healthcare worker if you have herpes during pregnancy, especially if it’s your first outbreak. There’s a risk that your baby can develop neonatal herpes which can be very dangerous or even fatal for the baby. Why Creating A Cure Is Difficult
Herpes is challenging to cure because of the nature of the virus. The HSV infection can hide away in a persons nerve cells for months or years before reappearing and reactivating the infection.
Experts suggest that even if antiviral drugs destroy the active parts of the infection, it only takes a small amount of the virus to hide in the nerve cells and become dormant for the herpes virus to continue.
To find a treatment, scientists need to understand further the mechanism that enables the infection to hide. By preventing this mechanism, they might be able to tackle the whole infection before parts go dormant.
Some medications may reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms and lower the chances of passing the infection on to others. Current antiviral medications to treat herpes include the following medications:
- acyclovir
first form of treatment for HSV infections. A doctor may treat a skin or mucous membrane infection with oral acyclovir, provided the person has a competent immune system.
For people with severe infections or less competent immune systems, the doctor may prescribe intravenous acyclovir. Possible side effects of acyclovir may impact the central nervous system or gastrointestinal tract, which runs from the mouth to the anus.
People with high levels of stress or trauma may experience more frequent recurrences of genital herpes. In this case, a doctor may advise psychotherapy and counseling.
