Shoppers Drug Mart And London Drugs Considering Selling Marijuana At In
Two of Canadas biggest pharmacy chains are contemplating making heavy entries into the countrys emerging market for sanctioned marijuana.
According to a February 23 Globe and Mailreport, Shoppers Drug Mart is discussing how it might sell medicinal cannabis.
Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. has held multiple meetings and phone conversations with licensed medical-marijuana producers across Canada over the past year about carrying a variety of brands in their drugstores, according to people involved in those conversations, reads the article by Grant Robertson and Greg McArthur.
A small team of executives from Shoppers is said to have been touring the sites of medical-marijuana growers over the past several months, holding talks with several of the 29 federally licensed producers, it continues.
Shoppers Drug Mart has more than 1,300 locations across Canada. The chain is owned by Loblaw Companies, the countrys larger food retailer.
According to CKNW, London Drugs is also considering selling marijuana.
A February 24 report quotes London Drugs vice-president of pharmacies, John Tse. We believe that it would be distributedand should be distributedthrough pharmacies where pharmacies can help guide people to use this on a medical basis, he said.
London Drugs only has some 80 locations but maintains a strong presence in Vancouver and throughout Western Canada.

How do I reorder my medication?
There are multiple ways to reorder your prescription. You can do it in person at the store, or over the phone with a pharmacy team member, or you can use our IVR, which is an interactive voice response system. Through the IVR you will be asked to enter the seven-digit RX number, which is located on the top left corner of your RX label. You can also use our online prescription portal in select provinces, where you can create an online pharmacy account. With this account, you can easily refill prescriptions, set up an email or text refill and pick up notification, view your prescription history at your pharmacy, plus you can turn on auto refill for eligible prescriptions so you can refill it when you’re ready. You can get started by going to shoppersdrugmart.ca/prescription. Pharmacy team members can also enable auto-refills and pick-up notifications for patients with or without an online account.

Shoppers Drug Mart is a familiar Canadian institution. Its 1000 stores dot the landscape no pharmacy chain is larger. In many Canadian communities, the corporation’s well-staffed local franchises give patients quality care.
However, in South Africa, the same corporation is potentially contributing to a public health disaster. In 2005, 2006 and twice in 2007, it has dispatched recruiters to that country, with the mission of plucking pharmacists from a continent that has far too few for its needs. Probably most Canadians by now have been cared for by a South African doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Migration is good for Canada because the quality of South African workers is generally excellent but it may be catastrophic for South Africa, coinciding as it does with an AIDS epidemic, where an estimated 19% of adults are HIV positive. Newspapers in that country report hospital patients waiting for several days just to have a prescription filled.1 In the worst-hit provinces, such as KwaZulu-Natal, hundreds of new pharmacists are needed to dispense AIDS drugs, but recently three-quarters of the slots for government pharmacists stood vacant.2
Vaccination And Antibiotic Resistance
Antibiotics are a great medical discovery. They have defeated many disease-causing bacteria, saved many lives, and helped to avoid potential serious complications of many diseases and infections.
However, antibiotics are only effective for treating infections caused by bacteria, however. For viral infections, antibiotics have no effect. If a person takes an antibiotic to treat a viral infection, it will not help, and it may harm, since it can lead to the phenomenon known as antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic resistance, simply put, means that antibiotics that used to work to treat an infection no longer work. Over the past 50 years of widespread antibiotic use, many medications have lost their power to treat infections. Because of improper use and over-prescribing of antibiotics, some bacteria have mutated in order to outsmart the effect of these medications.
When bacteria become resistant to the effects of the antibiotic, different and usually stronger antibiotics need to be used instead. Eventually, doctors could run out of medications to treat these infections, leading to serious consequences.

A new partnership between Metrolinx and Shoppers Drug Mart is seeing essentials available for purchase at select GO stations.
GO customers are able to purchase everything from allergy relief products to lip balm in Shoppers Drug Mart vending machines located inside a number of GO stations.
The Shoppers Drug Mart vending machines are located on the second floor of Union Station Bus Terminal, in Burlington GO Station on the west end of the south building, and at Oshawa GO Station.
The vending machines will sell everyday essential items such as over-the-counter drugs like pain relief medication, beauty items, toiletries, and seasonal items such as sunscreen and umbrellas.
How much will it cost you?
Prices for items in the Shoppers Drug Mart vending machines will be the same as regular retail prices found in local Shoppers Drug Mart stores.
For customers, its a bit of relief thats close at hand.
