Got a sore throat? The doctor may write a quick prescription for penicillin or amoxicillin, and with the stroke of a pen, help diminish public health and your own future health by encouraging bacteria to evolve resistance to antibiotics.

It has been widely reported that bacteria will evolve to render antibiotics mostly ineffective against them by mid-century, and current strategies to make up for the projected shortfalls havent worked.

One possible problem is that drug development strategies have focused on replacing antibiotics in extreme infections, such as sepsis, where every minute without an effective drug increases the risk of death.

But the evolutionary process that brings forth antibiotic resistance doesnt happen nearly as often in those big infections as it does in the multitude of small ones like sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and bladder infections, the Georgia Tech researchers said.

It might make more sense to give antibiotics less often and preserve their effectiveness for when theyre really needed. And develop alternate treatments for the small infections, Brown said.

Duplicitous antibiotics

The evolution of antibiotic resistance can be downright two-faced.

Furious infections have ensued, essentially invulnerable to antibiotics, followed by sepsis and death.

The Truth Of Using Antibiotics For Strep Throat

As we have cited previously that more and more people are shifting to another way to treat strep throat, instead of antibiotics. Then, a question has been raised Are antibiotics necessary?

Using Home Remedies For Strep Throat: A Daily Journal

Treating Group B Strep: Are Antibiotics Necessary?

10/6 Sunday afternoon felt something in throat. Still sang well at rehearsal.

10/7 Monday morning something became more prominent and I began the research into what I felt was inevitably the strep bacteria attacking my throat.

10/7 Monday early afternoon visit to doctor for regular checkup and asking about an unrelated pulled muscle. He checked my throat and said nothing. It didnt matter if he had, I would have just went through the motions of accepting an antibiotic prescription, but not taking it I had already made up my mind to do something different.

10/7 Monday afternoon found information on The Healthy Home Economist about beating strep with no meds. Followed up with a phone call to David Aaron Katz. Became convinced that I will muscle through it with home remedies. As per Davids suggestion, I started by sucking/chewing on cloves of garlic 5 of them before the day was out!

10/7 Monday evening attempted to sing. Did not go well, highs were very strained.

10/8 Tuesday morning throat uncomfortableness, but quick mirror check didnt seem to reveal anything overly red. Driving son to school is when I looked in rear view mirror and noticed two white spots. Strep confirmed.

10/8 Tuesday later morning started a cycle of garlic chewing with a mixture of raw honey & cayenne pepper every half hour . First two administers I experienced upset stomach, but became very tired and slept most afternoon.

Well its not back!

My Daughters Experience With Untreated Strep Throat

Recently, my preteen daughter came down with strep. She is my youngest child, and this was the first time any of my three children had ever had strep throat.

Given that she is healthy with no underlying health issues, my husband and I decided to ride it out. We treated her with natural antibiotics only.

The result?

She recovered completely within 48 hours. In fact, the white spots on her throat disappeared in less than 12 hours once we started treatments. We used garlic, raw manuka honey, and turmeric several times a day.

It will be interesting to see if she ever gets strep throat again. My bet is that she wont. She will likely develop partial or total lifelong immunity just like I did when I recovered at age 15 from untreated strep.

New Understanding Of Immune Cells Could Help Us Fight Infection Without Antibiotics

  • Study reveals how effective immune cells are at controlling Staphylococcus aureus â bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections in humans
  • Research paves the way for the development of new treatments to help the immune system kill bacteria without antibiotics
  • New insight into the immune systemâs response to infection is vital as antibiotics become less effective

A new understanding of immune cells could help scientists support our own immune system to fight infection without the need for antibiotics.

Scientists from the University of Sheffield examined how immune cells â called neutrophils â respond to bacteria, and the many different strategies they use to kill microbes which can cause harmful infections.

The study, published in the journal Autophagy, revealed how effective neutrophils were at controlling Staphylococcus aureus â bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections in humans.

Dr Simon Johnston, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sheffieldâs Florey Institute and Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease, said: âA major problem in some Staphylococcal aureus infections is that they can be resistant to antibiotics. This means treating these infections might be very difficult or impossible.

âWe know that some immune cells can detect when bacteria escape these phagosomes. One way is using autophagy, a process that evolved to recycle old or broken parts of cells.â

What Is Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is the name given to a bright red rash that develops following a Strep throat, although it can also develop following school sores .

Scarlet fever is less common than it was one hundred years ago because of antibiotic use and it only occurs in those who are susceptible to the toxins produced by the Streptococcal bacteria. It mostly occurs in children aged 4 to 8 years. By 10 years old more than 80% of children have developed lifelong protective antibodies against streptococcal toxins, whilst infants younger than 2 still have antibodies against the toxin that they acquired from their mother. This means that if two children in one family develop Strep throat, only one may develop scarlet fever.

Scarlet fever is a bright red rash that feels like sandpaper to the touch. The rash typically starts on the neck, underarm, or groin as small, flat red blotches that gradually become fine bumps and feel rough to the touch. In the body folds the rash may appear a brighter red . Facial flushing is common although a pale area may remain around the mouth. After seven days, the rash fades and some skin peeling may occur over the next month or longer, particularly around the fingertips, toes, and groin area.

Left untreated, Scarlet fever may progress to:

  • Ear, sinus, and skin infections
  • Joint inflammation
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Glomerulonephritis

Antibiotics Are The Best Treatment For Igas

Most commonly iGAS infections are treated with antibiotics, which dramatically reduce the amount of bacteria spreading in the body. According to Dr. Flores, oral antibiotics like amoxicillin and penicillin are highly effective with no signs of antibiotic resistance from the bacteria.

In more severe cases, children with iGAS infections may also need to be hospitalized. The kids with more difficult or severe infections are the ones that come in with a lot of other symptoms, said Dr. Flores. Its really just supportive care in addition to the antibiotic treatment.

The current shortage of liquid amoxicillinthe preferred treatment for iGAS infectionsmay cause additional complications for treatment. But experts say other antibiotic options are available.

Amoxicillin comes in many forms, according to Behnoosh Afghani, MD, a pediatric infectious disease expert at UCI Health. Doctors often prescribe liquid amoxicillin to children because its easier to ingest than swallowing a pill, but she says taking amoxicillin through an IV is just as effective. Theres not currently a shortage of penicillin, which works similarly to amoxicillinpenicillin is just an older option and does not treat as many bacterial strains.

If you suspect your child has a group A strep infection, healthcare providers recommend calling your pediatrician. If symptoms worsen, do not delay in going to the emergency room to get proper treatment as quickly as possible.

Invasive Group A Strep Infections Explained

Bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenesalso known as group A Streptococcus or group A strepcan cause a wide range of conditions, including invasive and noninvasive disease.

Strep throat, formally known as acute pharyngitis, is an example of noninvasive group A strep disease, which is typically mild but very contagious. Strep throat causes an estimated 5.2 million outpatient visits each year in the U.S. Scarlet fever and impetigo are also noninvasive group A strep diseases.

But, rarely, some group A strep infections can cause invasive disease, meaning the bacteria bypasses the immune system and invades certain parts of the bodyincluding muscle, fat, lungs, and the bloodstreamthat are normally free of germs. In the past five years, the U.S. has reported an annual 14,00025,000 iGAS cases. Between 1,5002,300 people die from iGAS diseases each year.

The one reassurance I give parents is that invasive group A strep infections are rare, says Anthony Flores, MD, MPH, PhD, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UTHealth Houston and Childrens Memorial Hermann Hospital. The most common group A bacterial infection is noninvasive and those frequently cause a sore throat in kids and young adults.

According to Dr. Flores, parents should closely watch children for symptoms that could indicate an iGAS infection, including:

  • Redness around a open sore or wound
