Which Prescription Drugs Affect Blood Sugar The Most

7 Drugs that Raise Your Blood Sugar (2022)

The following medications will impact your blood sugar the most tellingly:

Corticosteroids, or steroids for short, are notorious for causing high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Common steroids such as prednisone, betamethasone, or hydrocortisone make ones liver resistant to insulin, causing significant insulin resistance in people with diabetes while theyre taking the medication.

Hormonal birth control containing progesterone will increase a womans insulin resistance, which happens naturally as a way for the body to prepare for pregnancy. Women with diabetes who use birth control containing progesterone may have elevated blood sugar during part of the entirety of their cycle.

Blood pressure medications flush sodium and potassium from the body. Potassium plays a pivotal role in absorbing glucose into fat and muscle tissue, so without proper potassium levels, blood sugars may rise.

Statins reduce insulin secretion in people with type 2 diabetes and will cause overall insulin resistance in people with type 1 diabetes as well, both of which will raise your blood sugar.

Dopamine and Epinephrine, both secreted naturally by the adrenal glands in response to stress, also cause blood sugar spikes due to preparing the body for fight or flight events.

Adrenaline used to treat severe allergic reactions naturally raises blood sugars.

Aspirin, taken in large doses, has been shown to lower blood sugar levels in patients.

Know About Side Effects

All drugs can bring about side effects. The most common side effects of antibiotics are nausea, vomiting, loose stools, cramps, fever, as well as light sensitivity. A person can also have a hypersensitivity to an antibiotic. Few hypersensitive reactions may be particularly serious as well as even serious: breathing difficulty, hives, abnormal heartbeat, Stevens-Johnson syndrome , ligament rupture, seizures, as well as coughing up blood or bleeding from the the the rectum. Look for any medical help immediately if any of this crops up.

High Sugar Levels And Amoxillin Help

Juicyj said:Hi @TineBovingFoster Amoxicillin on it’s own won’t be causing the high levels, however the inflammation from the sinusitis will be. Any inflammation or infection will cause a stress reaction in the body meaning hormones are released to fight it and in turn will cause the BG levels to increase. It’s wise to check your correction dose with your nurse if this isn’t bringing the levels down, also lots of testing and fluids too to help flush out the extra glucose.Illness can play havoc with control so hopefully she’s feeling better soon.

Just a thought – is your daughter taking amoxicillin tablets or liquid? If liquid is it definitely the sugar free one?

Juicyj said:Hi @TineBovingFoster I can understand why your thinking it’s the antibiotics then, I had a course a month or so ago and my levels were only slightly raised but this was after surgery so put it down to the body reacting from the surgery. How many days are left on the amoxicillin ? Also is her sinusitis improving ? As long as the correction is working to bring levels back down then try and stick with it.

What Medications Can Raise Blood Sugar Levels

Posted on

Increased blood sugar levels can be dangerous, especially for individuals who have diabetes. Managing your medication regime while being mindful of your glucose levels is extremely important, which is why you should know what medications can raise blood sugar levels.

In This Article:

Blood sugar, also known as glucose, is the sugar found in the blood. Glucose gets into your blood by eating carbohydrates. The endocrine system and the pancreas keep blood sugar levels from getting too high or too low. Two specific hormones maintain balance, insulin, and glucagon.

Insulin sends excess sugar to the liver to be stored and used as energy in between meals. It is stored as glycogen. The hormone glucagon sends a signal to your liver to change the stored glycogen back into glucose so it can be released back into the bloodstream, providing energy for cells.

Normal blood sugar levels should stay near 100, but they will be lower for some, especially before eating anything.

At any given time, your blood sugar levels can become out of balance.

Antibiotics kill off the bad bacteria in your system. Unfortunately, they can do a number on the good bacteria that you have in your gut, and you may suffer the consequences . Some experts believe that taking probiotics, or good bacteria, may counteract these effects. There are a number of types of probiotics on the market, and you should always check with your doctor or dietitian before taking them. However, you CAN focus on eating foods rich in probiotics. These include yogurt , kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and tempeh.

Taking Steroids With Diabetes

Taking prednisone and other steroids will be unavoidable for people with certain conditions. These medications can give a person the best chance of recovery or pain relief, even if they also have diabetes.

People with diabetes will need to take certain steps before starting a course of prednisone or a similar medication.

For example, they should make the doctor aware of their diabetes diagnosis. In some cases, a doctor may be able to prescribe a different drug that does not interfere with blood sugar levels.

If this is not possible, they will often need to make to the prescribed dosage to keep blood sugar levels within the target range.

While taking steroid medications, a person with diabetes should consider the following practices:

  • checking blood glucose levels more often than usual â experts recommend doing this four or more times per day
  • increasing the dosage of insulin or oral medication, depending on blood sugar levels and whether a doctor advises it
  • monitoring urine or blood ketones
  • seeing a doctor immediately if blood sugar levels rise too high while taking steroids and the insulin or oral medication dose is not high enough to bring the levels down
  • carrying glucose tablets, juice, or candy at all times in case blood sugar levels drop suddenly

The following are answers to additional questions about diabetes, steroids, and drug interactions.

Some Antibiotics Are Observed To Increase Blood Sugar:

A significant twist in this story is that apart from the drug of our consideration, i.e Amoxicillin, some antibiotics increase blood sugar. These mainly include fluoroquinolones that many studies have found to cause hyperglycemia, especially in diabetic patients.

Another drug Gatifloxacin was also found to disturb normal levels of blood sugar. So in 2006, this antibiotic became prohibited by the FDA for diabetic patients. Even this medicine was banned in the UK. Again the mind needs logic that how antibiotics increase blood sugar means how it is possible.

In 2015 researchers found that some antibiotics can change the microbiome of the gut, disturbing glucose up taken by cells by changing their sensitivity. In this way, the glucose in the blood is increased, and here the real culprit is not other than the antibiotic. So especially diabetic people should take antibiotics with care and try to avoid them.

But to prevent antibiotics, they should also prevent infections so that there is no need for medicine. This discussion shows that there is some link between antibiotics and blood sugar levels.

The usual winter cold just seemed to linger and not go away. It had been 2 weeks of nasal congestion, runny nose and cough, but now I had sinus pressure and little to no energy. Fortunately, my blood sugar was in range the entire 2 weeks despite such awful symptoms. I then went on azithromycin, or the well-known Z-pack, for a sinus infection. I took the medication with dinner and then 2-3 hours after I felt even more fatigued, with dry mouth and a headache. I checked my blood sugar and noticed it was 270mg/dl.

There is one study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases in 2013 that examined 78,000 individuals with diabetes in Taiwan from January 2006 to November 2007. Specifically, the research team led a population-based cohort study and examined effects of three different classes of antibiotics on severe blood sugar swings. The antibiotics included fluoroquinolones , second-generation cephalosporins or macrolides . The research team then recorded the number of emergency department visits or hospitalizations secondary to blood sugar swings in a 30-day period after initiating antibiotics.

Dr. Lai, the lead investigator, and his colleagues, stated, “Our results identified moxifloxacin as the drug associated with the highest risk of hypoglycemia, followed by levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin.” “Other antibiotics should be considered if dysglycemia is a concern, such as a beta lactam or macrolide.”

Things That Cause Blood Sugar To Rise

Many things can trigger a spike in your blood sugar. Foods high in carbohydrates, processed, and with added sugars are known culprits. Foods high in saturated fats can worsen insulin resistance.

Surprising factors contributing to a rise in blood sugar include skipping breakfast, a sedentary lifestyle, hormonal changes, and poor dental health. Stress and inflammation in the body also contribute to a spike in blood sugar by releasing the hormone cortisol, making your body sensitive to insulin.

Some reports claim sunburns and artificial sweeteners will increase blood sugar levels.

Finally, there are medications you may not be aware of that can affect blood sugar balance.

Many Medications That Treat Common Conditions Can Actually Raise Your Blood Sugar Levels And Make Glucose Management Much More Difficult

Sara Seitz 0

People with diabetes often take other medications to support their heart, weight, blood pressure, and more. While these medications are important to your overall health, they can also make controlling your blood sugars more difficult.

In fact, some of the most common non-diabetes medications taken by people living with type 2 diabetes are well known for raising blood sugar in most patients, whether they have or dont have diabetes.

Here are the six most common medications that have negative impacts on blood glucose control for people managing their type 2 diabetes.

Exposure Of People With Diabetes To Infections:

High blood sugar or hyperglycemia may be of many types and for many reasons. It may be due to some genetic factor, age factors of disturbance in some physiological process. Diabetic patients are more susceptible to many infections than non-diabetics.

Researchers working at the University of Surrey, UK, found that people with normal blood sugar levels have less chance of developing any infection. This research work was published in August 2006 in a journal named Diabetes Medicine. According to observation, there are samples of 34000 people with type II diabetes and 600,000 healthy people.

It was concluded that diabetic people experience more infections than normal ones. One possible cause of this can be that fungi and bacteria use blood glucose to fulfill their carbon requirements. So when sugar/glucose levels are high in the blood, then it is a golden chance for these bacteria and fungi to grow and cause possible infections.

7 Medications That Can Raise Your Blood Sugar Levels

If you have an infection, then your blood sugar can be high even if you are non-diabetic. So you should know about the possible symptoms of hyperglycemia. These symptoms are almost similar to those of diabetic ones. These include

    • Frequent urination

So if you are experiencing any of these symptoms after being infected, you should not ignore it. You should immediately consult your physician. Although hyperglycemia is not common in non-diabetics, it can be dangerous for them.

Sometimes you may feel difficulty breathing, and you ignore it as you think it is due to infection. But this ordinary symptom of hyperglycemia can be proved fatal. Another factor that increases the chances of hyperglycemia is obesity.

So if you are obese, your chances of non-diabetic hyperglycemia after infection will be higher than other people.

    What Is Gut Bacteria

The intestinal flora consists of 300 to 500 species of bacteria that live within your gastrointestinal tractthe genetic content sum up to a staggering 2 million genes. Even more mind-boggling is that the total number of intestinal bacteria in the gut is approximately 10 times the total number of cells in the human body.

These bacteria perform a myriad of functions like fighting off harmful pathogens, breaking down indigestible food components, and maintaining the intestinal lining. But recent studies have uncovered that the parts of the intestinal flora may be even more intricate than previously thought.

It is now believed that gut bacteria play an essential role in the metabolism of glucose or sugars. They might be responsible for processing f complex carbohydrates into glucose and the assimilation of glucose by the body.

Which Supplements Affect Your Blood Sugar The Most

Caffeine, ingested as a liquid, or taken in pill form found in many energy and weight loss supplements, can cause blood sugars to spike. Caffeine causes insulin resistance in some people and can negatively affect postprandial blood sugar levels. Caffeine is also an appetite suppressant, so the effects are sometimes balanced out, but it is definitely still something to look out for.

Ginkgo Biloba increases the breakdown of insulin in your liver, leading to a need for more insulin and also higher blood sugars.

Melatonin doesnt only help you sleep, but it also increases both insulin resistance and blood pressure, leading to higher blood sugars.

Vitamin B3 or Niacin, taken to reduce bad cholesterol, increases insulin resistance and raises blood sugar levels.

DHEA is a naturally-occurring hormone taken to treat many conditions, most notably, Lupus. This hormone increases insulin resistance in the body and causes higher blood sugars.
