What Are The Symptoms Of A Horse Eye Infection

Some things to look out for is excessive tearing of the eye, squinting, or a cloudy/discolored appearance. If something looks off to you, monitor your horse closely to make sure it does not persist. If youre unsure, giving your vet a call is a good place to start. They will be able to give you advice and suggest if you should bring your horse in for an examination or not.

How To Treat Pink Eye In Horses With Saline Solution

Treating pink eye in horses is as simple as cleaning the infected area with an over-the-counter saline solution. If you dont want to go to the local drugstore to get it, make your own solution by combining ¼ teaspoon of salt with one cup of lukewarm water. This simple recipe can easily be scaled to make as much solution as you need.

This treatment isnt meant to replace the professional care of a veterinarian. You should still call the vet. Protecting the infected area with a fly mask and keeping the horse in a low-lit area will help subdue the symptoms until the vet arrives.

How To Use And Store

This antibiotic ointment should be kept closed in the container in which it came, safely out of the reach of children. Be sure to store this at a moderate room temperature, avoiding places where there may be excessive heat or moisture, such as the bathroom

When using ophthalmic antibiotic ointments apply these to the inside lower lid of the affected eye. Usually this is done every 3 to 4 hours for a week to 10 days, but, of course, follow your healthcare providers instructions.

If you do not see improvement in the first few days or if your symptoms get worse after using the ointment, be sure to check with your practitioner on this.

Keep in mind, this is for the eye only. Do not put the ointment in your nose or mouth. Also, do not share the ointment with anyone else since this can enable germs to spread from one person to another.

What Will Treatment Look Like

If you suspect your horse has pink eye, its still important to call a veterinarian. By doing so, youll be able to rule out other, more serious eye diseases. Once your vet confirms a diagnosis of conjunctivitis, they will likely prescribe your horse topical antibiotic cream, eye drops, or ointment to banish all signs of infection. In between applications, be sure to administer Vetericyns eye wash twice a day to keep the eye clean and clear during treatment.

If your vet prescribed antibiotics, be sure to run the entire treatment course, even if things seem to return to normal. Antibiotics work to eliminate the disease over time, and stopping them prematurely can result in some of the bacteria surviving and re-spreading. In turn, this can cause more damage to the eye.

Over-the-counter eye drops do not cure pink eye alone. However, they can be beneficial as a supporting element to antibiotics. With frequent eye flushing and proper care, your horse may experience significant improvement in just a few days.

How To Apply Eye Drops

Applying eye drops in our own eyes makes many of us flinch and twitch. To a horse whos experiencing discomfort, anything going near their eye is a big red flag. To that end, youll need a strategy to apply eye drops.

The first tip is to always move slowly. To make applying eye drops easier, youll want to spend plenty of time interacting with your horses face, gently petting them and reassuring them. If you do this when theyre healthy, your horse will naturally be more at ease with this process.

If you can feel your horses hesitancy, rub the areas around both eyes. Give your horse treats when they allow you to get close.3

The easiest place to apply eye drops is the inner corner of the eye.4 Stand to the side of your horses head and move slowly while you work. If you need to, grab a helping hand to steady your steed.

If youre applying ointment, or having a hard time with the corner of the eye, it may help to slide your hand under the cheek piece of your horses halter. That way, when their head moves, your hand is less likely to bump their eye.

With your other hand, gently pull down your horses lower eyelid with your thumb and apply a line of ointment. Your horse will blink the medication into place, and youre good to go.

What Is Bnp Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment:

Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Each gram contains Bacitracin Zinc 400 units, Neomycin Sulfate 5 mg , Polymyxin B Sulfate 10,000 units in a base of white petrolatum and Mineral Oil. The three antibiotics provide a broad spectrum of activity against the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly involved in superficial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva. Bacitracin is effective against gram-positive bacteria including hemolytic and nonhemolytic streptococci and staphylococci. Resistant strains rarely develop. Neomycin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including staphylococci, Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae and many strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas. Polymyxin B is bactericidal to gram-negative bacteria especially Pseudomonas. No resistant strains have been found to develop in vivo.

How To Prevent Eye Infections And Injuries

Your horse’s environment should be as dust free as possible. If hay is dusty, or bedding is very dry and dusty, dampen it or use other fodder or bedding. Make sure that sharp edges on water troughs, metal buildings, fences, or other obstacles are covered or inaccessible. Pound in or pull any old nails that may be protruding from fences or other structures.

Taking care to make your horse’s home as safe as possible will help to prevent accidental eye injury.

What Causes A Horses Eye To Turn White

Horses with old corneal scarring from prior injury may have a clearly demarcated white or gray spot on the cornea. Another structure that can cause an eye to look cloudy is the front chamber of the eye, known as the anterior chamber. If the fluid in this chamber becomes inflamed, it can make the whole eye appear gray.

Treating An Eye Infection Or Injury: Promptness Is Essential

My horses seem determined to stay on the front page of my blog! In the past three weeks theyve caused three calls to the vet: first when Freedom hurt his leg out hunting, second when Kroni coliced, and most recently last Sunday, when I arrived to find Kronis eye swollen and full of puss. If it was one of my kids, it would have been no problem: a simple case of conjunctivitis that could be resolved in a few days of optical antibiotic ointment.

However, eye injuries in horses are potentially quite serious and can be volatile: delaying treatment can make the outcome much worse. So, although a Sunday visit would mean an emergency vet call, it was not something to leave until Monday. Thank goodness my cell phone has a speaker phone feature. I was very soon talking to my vet while holding a flashlight up to my horses eye. My instructions were to see if there was any sign of a white film, which would have indicated a scratch or other damage to the cornea. Luckily, although his eye was red and puffy, it was still clear.

    Administering Eye Meds Option 1

    1. Stand on the side of the horses head facing the eye you are going to medicate.

    2. Using the hand closest to the horses nose , place the heel of your palm near the inside corner of the horses eye.

    3. Use your index finger and thumb to slightly part the lids of the eye. As the lids part, the lower lid should move away from the eye ball creating a small gap. As an alternative to parting the lids, gently pull out the lower eyelids using the lower eye lashes. Some horses will tolerate this method over parting the lids. This is the ideal location to dispense the medication. The natural blinking motion of the horses third eyelid will disperse the medication across the surface of the eye.

    4. Using your other hand, place the heel of the palm on the horses head near the outside of the eye while holding on to the tube of ointment between your index finger and thumb.

    5. Hold the tube so that its end is pointing forward towards the inside corner of the eye. This helps reduce the risk of touching the tip of the tube to any of the eye structures. Also, if the horse throws his head, you will be less likely to poke his eye.

    6. Starting at the inside corner of the eye, gently squeeze the tube and dispense a small strip of ointment into the small gap between the eye and the lower lid. Your vet will indicate the exact amount of medication to apply, which is usually between a 0.5cm and 1.5cm strip. Again, remember not to touch the tip of the tube to any of the eye structures.

    Causes Of Eye Infections

Horses can develop an infection after having a foreign object lodged within the eye. If the surface of the eye is scratched, environmental bacteria can quickly cause an infection. This could make the horse’s eye appear cloudy and red. The horse will likely squint and tear profusely and may be reluctant to let you take a close look. These types of infections should be seen by a veterinarian, who will prescribe an antibiotic ointment and perhaps other therapies to treat the infection and help heal the eye.

Recurring uveitis is another, much more serious eye infection in horses that can lead to blindness if left untreated. Also known as “moon blindness,” this condition may have multiple causes. Research has indicated that a bacterial disease called leptospirosis can be one of the major causes, and other causes are suspected as well.

The signs of uveitis include squinting and hypersensitivity to light, a cloudy eye, and eye pain. Your veterinarian would be able to detect whether other changes have occurred within the eye. Symptoms may flare up and then subside, only to flare repeatedly again.

It is used in the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva in dogs and cats when due to organisms susceptible to the antibiotics contained in the ointment. Laboratory tests should be conducted including in vitro culturing and susceptibility tests on samples collected prior to treatment. Contact your veterinarian if your pet’s symptoms begin to get worse or if you do not see any improvement to your pet’s condition after a few days. Do not touch the tube opening to any surface, including eyes and hands. The tube opening is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.

    Eyeballing Conjunctivitis In Horses

Swelling and irritation in your horse’s eye may be equine conjunctivitis. Here’s everything you need to know about this bacterial infection.

When your horse has a swollen eye, its always cause for concern, but this time of year it may just be equine conjunctivitis , an easily treated bacterial infection.

Afflicted eyes often swell shut, with the bright pink conjunctiva appearing to ooze out between the lids. Remembering that your horse is likely to be touchy about having his eye examined, use the thumb and forefinger of one hand to gently spread the lids apart and inspect the eyeball itself for signs of trouble. A bright, healthy globe indicates that the problem is in the lids alone. Any abnormalities of the eyeball constitute an emergency situation, necessitating an immediate call to your veterinarian.

Equine conjunctivitis is caused when trauma to the tissues surrounding the eye opens the way for bacterial invasion. For instance, when face flies are attracted to the moisture around a horses eye, the horse rubs the area on his knee to rid himself of the irritation. The insects depart, but any bacteria they were carrying remain to be rubbed into the eyelids sensitive membranes. Windblown dust also leads to eye irritation, rubbing and subsequent infection. Unlike pinkeye in cattle, equine conjunctivitis is not an airborne contagion, but horses can contract particularly virulent strains from each other through direct contact.
